Located 50 minutes from Merida, this architect-designed waterfront house is unique. In the large central room high ceilings create an open feeling, while ample windows and glass doors maximize the breeze and light. Each room has a view of the endlessly changing gulf waters. An attention to detail sets it apart from the square boxes that are too common on the beach.
The air-conditioned bedroom is loft-like, set behind and above the living room. Its windows are shaded by vertical poles of peeled zapote branches which support wild orchids indigenous to the area. From the hanging bed you have an unimpeded view of the water. This romantic setting is ideal for a couple; however, the house can comfortably accommodate a family of 4. There are two built-in benches each longer than a standard bed; their comfortable mattress and abundant cushions are of hand woven textiles. Hand made hammocks offer additional sleeping space.
Just outside the sliding glass doors, water cascades down a series of domino-shaped lozenges and into a canal that traverses the property; an ideal place to sit and wash away the sand and salt from the beach. If you don't want to swim in the gulf, and ample plunge pool is a pleasant alternative. At night, reflected light from the canal plays across the walls.

Dear Barbara, I received the money for the deposit back, and I want to thank you for the trust that everything is ok in the house. Most important I want to thank you for making your house and everything in it available to us. We enjoyed it greatly, and the stairs turned out to be an adventure for my mother in law. She usually has trouble sleeping, but she slept like a rock in her rockabye baby bed up in her treehouse . Wilma was very nice and helpful and it is such a good thing to have her next door. Our only regret is not having more time. My husband and I wanted to visit with you, but we will have to postpone it for our next trip. Thank you again for all your attentions, you were wonderful and so accommodating to all our needs. I will talk to you later when I get home in Michigan. Warmly, ElisaDid you find this review helpful? We have just returned from a two week stay at Casa San Benito. This is the first time we have rented a home, but it will not be the last! Hopefully others can meet the standard set by this one. It was clean, modern and beautifully decorated, reflecting not only the work of an excellent architect, but also the taste of its owner, artist and photographer Barbara. Beds were comfortable, kitchen and bathroom were fine and everything was in working order. The beach provided many long, interesting walks, the plunge pool was a super place to cool off, and the pool deck was found to be a fine sunbathing area. All, in all, the home was a relaxing, restful and esthetically pleasing place to stay. Wilma, the neighbour lady who cares for the house is kind, caring and very helpful. Barbara, the owner who lives in Merida, was very helpful and answered all our questions. Frequent day trips to surrounding small towns, the small city of Progresso, nearby ruins and a park to see flamingos (thousands of them!!) enhanced our visit. You do require a car to stay here, but the roads were excellent and the distances short. We chose to shop for groceries in Progresso and cook many of our meals, but had some excellent dinners and lunches in Progresso as well. We highly recommend Casa San Benito to anyone desiring a restful but interesting vacation. It is appropriate for travellers of all ages.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks so much for your kind comments. I look forward to seeing you again.

We stayed in this unique home for a week. Private beach walks, cooling off in the plunge pool, and sleeping in the hanging bed were highlights. We ate breakfast in and drove to Progreso for supper most nights. Easy day trips to Chichen Itza, Dzibilchaltun (smaller Mayan ruins with lovely cenote), and Celestun to see the pink flamingos. Barbara made every effort to see that we enjoyed our stay and Wilma (the next door caretaker) was very friendly as well.Recommended for: Age 55+.
Owner response: It was a pleasure to host you, Ann and Tom; I seemed to be blessed with good guests. Rumour has it you are looking for a bigger place for lots of friends next year and if it is true, I'd be pleased t to help you find a good place at a fair price.

My wife and I stayed in this unique home for the month of Feb. 2012. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing beach home this is the place to be. It is situated between the city of Progresso and Telchac Puerto, both within easy driving distance. ( you will need a car if you stay here) The kitchen is well stocked and has a full fridge with a good size freezer. The woman who lives next door will take care of your laundry needs and will clean the house for you. Very reasonably priced. We enjoyed walking for miles on the beach and swimming in the ocean. Then up to the pool and gorgeous yard to relax.Barb, the owner is a wonderful woman and lives in Merida. She answered our many questions and was very helpful to us. It really is a beautiful home and we would go back in a heartbeat.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We had the most wonderful time at the beach house. We stayed for two weeks in June. The weather was great and we had the beach all to ourselves; it was paradise! We swam every day, made long beach walks and watched the sunset, all together very romantic. The house is very comfortable, well equipped, and super stylish (the architecture is stunning, both the inside and outside)! You do need a car to get to some of the nearby attractions. Progreso is the nearest tourist town with supermarkets/internet/restaurants and is about 30 minutes by car. We drove up to Dzilam de Bravo to do a crocodile and flamingo tour. Although you can see the flamingo’s at many points on the way there, the tour was a lot of fun. We also made a trip to Uxmal and Chichen Itza. We can very much recommend Uxmal, it’s only 2 hours and when you go a little earlier, you have the place all to yourself. Thank you Barbara for your hospitality. We hope to visit your beautiful place again in the future!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: It is such a pleasure when I hear from my guests and know that they were happy in Casa San Benito and I do so appreciate feed back. I look forward to the day when Marianna and Zeger from Amsterdam return. I might add that generally it takes me 20 minutes to get to Progreso which is 23 km form the house and that car rentals are now available at a very modest price.

Casa San Benito is a perfect place to relax, lay back, walk the beaches and explore the coast. Our visit was the last week of January and we had the beach all to ourselves. We bought some groceries in Progreso and cooked breakfasts and a few dinners in the well equipped kitchen. We explored the coast to the East and found some great seafood restaurants and local color. Casa Benito is nicely equipped for two adults or two adults and kids. The bed is suspended from the ceiling by large ropes and is most comfortable (we were concerned but it was great). Barbara met us at the house to get us oriented and the caretakers from next door were always available to answer questions and help out. January is a bit cool at least it was this year but the solitude was very relaxing. We would strongly recommend this property for anyone looking for a quiet retreat.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: I am a photograph and photojournalist. Above is one of my pictures taken in the canal that fronts the house; it reflects the clouds, and emphasizes the ever moving water and gorgeous grape leaves fallen from a tree on the property. Travel is in my genes and I have been traveling - mostly backpack fashion - since I was old enough to get on a plane alone. I love animals and I welcome small well-trained pets.
Why the Owner Chose San Benito:
This location is idyllic. Right on the beach. Most of the year tranquil. July and August as well as Christmas and Holy week it is full of Meridanos and great for those who like a festive atmosphere.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The architecture is unique, providing both privacy and view of the water. A constant breeze makes the hot days comfortable. There are parks for ornithologists as well as archaeological sites. Lots of charming small villages dot the coastline.
