Bear Meadows Cabin on the Shenandoah River
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Our cabin at Bear Meadows has everything you want to augment your relaxation in the peaceful harmony of the Shenandoah River.
Sit around the large stone firepit, listening to the calls of 100 different birds. Free canoes sit nearby for your immediate use. Make sure to grab the oars and life jackets from the shed before heading out!
A full acre of open yard, from the house to the river, gives you plenty of space to setup your soccer game or volleyball net.
A 7-foot hot tub, from one of the top manufacturers in the business, is great for evening relaxation or morning soak. And while you soak, look out across the river and mountains.
On the deck, a large gas grill is waiting for your hot dogs, hamburgers and steaks. Want a more authentic outdoor grill? In the mood for roasting marshmallows or a late-night chat? We have just the thing. In the middle of the lawn is a stone campfire pit, over 6 feet in diameter. Find all the wood you need next to the shed, and pick up the lawn chairs from inside the shed.
In the shed, we've placed 4 mountain bikes for those days when you want to head down the road and check out nature one spin at a time. Be sure to grab the helmets too!
The cabin is also outfitted with the best technology has to offer. Satellite TV in every room with 200 channels of crystal-clear satellite service. FREE LONG DISTANCE phone calls. DVD and VCR player in every room. Free washer and dryer. Wireless HIGH SPEED INTERNET access, totally free.
WHY WE ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE:
- Satellite flatscreen HDTV, DVD & VCR in every bedroom and the living room
- Large, instant-on gas fireplace
- Large Hot Tub - no dinky little jacuzzi for you!
- Full deck, patio, picnic table, and large gas grill
- Private canoes (2) and mountain bikes (4)
- Private game room with foosball, pool, and ping-pong
- Fully equipped kitchen with all appliances, equipment & utensils - no puny kitchenette
- Spacious house, not a cramped kit-cabin
- Massive campfire pit (see pic), over 7 feet across
- Fully private, no neighbors in sight

For the last few years five friends and I have been vacationing in Maryland and Virginia. So far the places we've stayed have all lived up to the owner's description of the property. The houses we've stayed in seem to have been run by professionals and we've never had any cause for complaint. This year we got to have a new experience. We arrived on time at the house where we had no problem getting into the house where we found dirty dishes in the sink, unmade beds and dirty towels on the floor of the bathrooms. We got to call around to the property's caretaker and the cleaning crew eventually showed up and asked us to leave while they finally got to work, not what I was looking forward to after a four hour drive, but it did give us the opportunity to leave all of our stuff in the care of perfect strangers and I guess that was a good trust building exercise that we weren't expecting. After this things progressed smoothly in the otherwise lovely house, that is until the propane ran out while we were cooking dinner, which would have been delicious until we had to take it out of the oven and try to grill it. The propane situation was fixed the next morning, but not until after breakfast. Now imagine the last time you went to a nice restaurant and they made some unfortunate mistake, the staff probably did their best to make things right, maybe the manager sent over a free dessert or a bottle of wine, maybe they comp the meal. The point is they probably didn't just say "well, we tried our best, here's nothing". But that is exactly what these folks did. I guess this industry doesn't thrive on repeat business. We will not be visiting this place again unless it is under new management. I should mention that everything else about the place was fine and fit the description so if you want to take your chances you may have a really nice, hassle free time. We did not.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.
Owner response: This review, by Michael, is both petulant and deceptive. Head on over to TripAdvisor or VHR (or even here on HA) and you'll see dozens of five star reviews by guests (including a lot of repeat guests). Our cleaning crew - which is top notch - couldn't make it to the house before this guest arrived due to an emergency. This was the first time in years the cleaning crew had this happen. We explained this to the guest and assured them that the crew was in route. They didn't show up "eventually" but right away. The guest arrived at 3 pm and the house was being cleaned about an hour later. Again, we explained that this was totally unusual and unforeseen and apologized profusely. Phrases like "leaving our stuff with perfect strangers" demonstrates the guest's petulance here. Our management crew is around the cabin all the time. Occasionally, they have to come on site mid-bookings for pest and landscaping services. Being "around the guest's stuff" is normal and we hire very good, very trustworthy individuals precisely for that reason. As it happened, one of the main gas tanks at the house also ran out. Again, we jumped immediately on the problem, sending out the gas people as soon as possible. The house has multiple other cooking options including a large gas grill (with backup gas tanks), electric oven, microwave and two campfire pits. To summarize, as the guest points out himself, the "otherwise lovely" property where "everything else was fine and fit" had the cleaning staff on-sight for a few hours and a gas tank go empty that was refilled promptly by the management. For those minor issues, he expects a refund? Hardly reasonable. And we didn't offer "nothing". We responded to his complaints offline, offering a large discount off a future stay at any of our cabins. He ignored it. What Michael left out of his review was how he and his friends left the cabin upon departure - an utter and complete mess, so much so that the cleaning crew spent almost 4 hours working on it. We had to collect a small part of the security deposit to cover the excessive cleaning, which is extremely rare. It's odd that someone who gets so angry over the cleaning crew being a little late and a gas tank being empty for a few hours would turn around and be so thoughtless in their own use.
