This historic home, within Carmel-by-the-Sea, is the real thing. An authentic, original Carmel home with views of Point Lobos and Fish ranch, this home has everything to make one feel like a local.
Furnished entirely with antiques and fine art, this home is special.
Wake up in the morning to squirrels playing in the hedge, blue jays hopping in the garden. Take your coffee on the sun drenched terrace while hummingbirds sip their breakfast from blooms in the large and gracious garden.
After a day visiting the peninsula, stroll a couple of beautiful blocks to the sea shore to watch the sun go down, then back home for a glass of wine in front of a roaring fire in the spacious living room.
If you don't feel like cooking dinner in the large, professionally equipped kitchen there are plenty of options within easy walking distance, beginning with Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch (just a block away) featuring spectacular views of the bird sanctuary and point Lobos .
Drift off to sleep with the rhythmic sound of waves in the background. There's nothing like the comfort, privacy and serenity of 'Los Abuelos' anywhere in Carmel... perhaps the world.

Beautiful, well-maintained home. Gorgeous furnishings, stunning views, great outdoor space, excellent location. Accurate listing. We had planned on going out for meals but ended up cooking at the house we loved it so much. Marie was a pleasure to deal with and very helpful. I would love to return next time I'm in Carmel.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you so very much Jason. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay. I would have to say, on my end, that you were the perfect guests! Hope to see you again soon.

First of all, Zabie was as gracious as the owner, extremely helpful as a guide, and was flexible in all ways possible. Los Abuelos is a lovely home with exceptional views of Carmel Bay and formal gardens throughout the property. The home is very comfortable; but at the same time, decorated with antiques throughout. We enjoy cooking and the kitchen had everything needed and more. When staying at Los Abuelos, check out the cabinets and refrigerator for basics before going to Safeway, Whole Foods, or the many vegetable & fruit stands in the area because your needs are probably already stocked in the kitchen. As for the area, we know it well through living and many visits and our Home away was in a perfectly convenient location. Just a short walk away from the Mission Inn where the ocean view, sheep grazing, and joys of nature are to be enjoyed with a glass of wine. Many thanks to Zabie, Monica, and all that made this a perfect stay for 4 nights in June & July 2012 for Bob, Wilda, Northrup, and Brenda from the southeastern part of the states.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, people with disabilities, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thank you very much Wilda and Bob. Everything about working with you through the months leading up to your arrival was wonderful for me as well. By the way, I've added more kitchen equipment.... just can't help myself! Hope to welcome you back soon!

Your warm home, beautiful, lush back yard and tasteful interior design provided the perfect setting for our family to laugh, cook, and lounge as we do not unfortunately get to see each other very often. On a personal note, our 2 year old daughter climbed her first steps solo up your beautiful staircase, so your home will always have a special place in our hearts. Thanks again for the wonderful stay as we loved the peacefulness your home generously provided.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

It's such a beautiful place, inside and out, and it's been such an important part of our vacation here. We loved waking up to all that sunlight and the spectacular views. We had a quiet, candle lit barbecue in the back yard. The kids loved starting a fire in the living room fireplace. We had so much fun here! Thanks!Did you find this review helpful? Review Title: Not really three bedroom

Review Text: There are three beds in the house, but the third bedroom is really a sitting area that has been converted to a bedroom. As a result, one must either walk through this sitting area/bedroom to get to the third bedroom, or use uncomfortable and unwieldy outdoor stairs to access the third bedroom. Furthermore, the den is not a separate room, but is an extension of the master bedroom - as a result, it is not a place where people can gather to watch television or congregate. I believe the advertising for this property was deceptive in regard to the bedrooms and den. The kitchen was very well outfitted, the living room comfortable and roomy, the dining room very pleasant. The proximity to the ocean was as advertised. The house was clean and very well kept. The so-called shower in the master bathroom was actually dangerous, having nearly scalded one of our guests (photo available). We subsequently were told by the housekeeper that it had been that way for "a while". We have stayed in perhaps 30-40 rental properties over the past five to ten years and were looking forward to this being one of the best and in that regard it was hugely disappointing. It is certainly overpriced for its' core structure, and, BTW, the cleaning fee is preposterous. I would not recommend this property in its' present configuration.Owner response: I am very sorry that this guest was disappointed in the configuration of the house or felt that somehow she was misled. What surprises me the most about this review are the numerous phone conversations and emails exchanged throughout this families stay. At no time were any of these issues addressed, nor did anyone write me directly to complain after the fact. I was under the impression that all went well. Los Abuelos was built in 1926, and while it was recently fully renovated, we chose to keep the original layout in order to maintain the charm and preserve the family friendly design of the period. The house has, in fact, three bedrooms (always has) each with it’s own ‘in suite’ bathroom, all are part of the original design. The two bedrooms on the west wing were designed as a parental suite, and the exterior staircase to the ‘parental room’, while steep, is original. This is, after all, Los Abuelos. A house built by grandparents to welcome their family. The ‘Den” is it’s own room (Jack and Jill style to the Master Bedroom) which my family has used as the television room for more than 50 years. It had never occurred to me that the configuration might be a problem. Additionally, the Master Bedroom is accessible via an exterior covered porch from the interior stairway. (visible in the photos) As for the shower in the Master Bath, I am very sorry if someone was hurt by the water being too hot, though I don’t fully understand, since the temperature of the shower is adjustable. (Ironically, a previous guest complained that the water in the Master Bath was not hot enough) What we are finding problematic is the water pressure for that bathroom. Since redoing most of the plumbing, there have been ongoing plumbing issues which we have been consistently working on with our plumber. I sincerely apologize if this has caused discomfort for any guest. The cleaning fee is exactly what I am charged by the bonded cleaning company we use... it is the cost of keeping our nearly 4,000 sq ft house in the 'clean and well kept' condition this guest favorably comments upon. I too have rented many vacation properties, they are not always clean and they are certainly not all maintained the way Los Abuelos is. The house is not for everyone, as such, I have modified my description of the property so that is clear.

The house is stunning with wonderful views and has been restored to it's original luster. Big backyard by Carmel standards. 2 minute walk to Mission Ranch for sunset cocktails. (No Clint sightings however.) Short walk into the village for dining and shopping. And the beach is less than 5 minutes away. I look forward to returning.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, girls getaway.
Owner response: Strolling down to the Mission Ranch is a nice way to wind down at the end of a beautiful day. The sunsets are magnificent, and the patio faces the ocean with an enormous bird sanctuary and grazing sheep in between. I highly recommend it!

About the owner: I was born and raised in Carmel and I attended the Mission school. You can't get much more local than that! I currently split my time between Paris, France (where I also have vacation rentals) and Carmel. Please use me as a resource... ask me questions and let me help you have the holiday of your life in beautiful Carmel by the Sea.
Why the Owner Chose Carmel By the Sea:
My parents fell in love with this house, can't say that I blame them!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Los Abuelos was built in 1926 by MJ Murphy. The house is traditional yet airy and open. You will hear the waves crashing on the beach at night, and birds song in the morning. You can see the ocean as well as gaze upon Fish Ranch. The oldest (and biggest) Monterey Pine tree sits in our front yard, as well as the 2nd biggest Holly tree in the United States.
