White Pillars was constructed in 1849 for a true Cape Cod whaler, Captain Obed Whelden. It is located in the quaint Historical District of South Dennis and has every modern amenity to ensure you will have the vacation you and those who are lucky to visit with you deserve. The house is spacious, open, brightly decorated with a nauthical theme, and is completely FAMILY FRIENDLY. HINT: Kids, if YOU are reading this, GO TELL MOM & DAD!! WE WELCOME EACH ONE OF YOU! Enjoy singing along by the piano, watching your favorite TV shows, DVD's, sports activities, or keeping up with the news on any of the 4 television sets. There is a nice library of books, ranging from those for children to historical fiction and non fiction novels for adults, and an assortment of board games ready to use. Enjoy playing pool or playing cards in the billiard room, which is adjacent to a very large sunroom, allowing a massive 'one room space' when the French doors are open. The huge kitchen has been completely updated and includes a center gas cooking island, a built in oven, microwave, dishwasher, and double door refrigerator. For dining, the kitchen has seating at the 'island', a corner dining nook (with ceiling fan), and a corner table. Every cooking pot, pan, and utensil you need you will find, as well as all plates, bowls, and glasses. There is a large laundry room with a Kenmore washer and dryer. The family room has spacious seating, a new HDTV, Home Theater System, wireless internet/WiFi, wood blinds, a ceiling fan, and a separate table for work on the computer (WORK - ???), or - BETTER! - computer games for the kids to enjoy! The family room opens to a beautiful dining room with a glistening chandelier and adjacent living room with a vintage piano and one of the seven famous 'Count Rumsford' fireplaces, ornately handcrafted in 1849. The dining room has French doors which open to a wood deck, leading to a large, bricked patio, complete with dining tables, chairs, a propane grill, and cooling outdoor shower. From the patio, take 15 seconds and step down to 'The Field of Dreams', almost 3/4 of an acre of level land for virtually any outdoor activity you can imagine! As the house sits atop a slight bluff, there is always a cooling breeze from the East, and ceiling fans and window fans throughout. There is a full bedroom downstairs, next to a full bath and a powder room next to the kitchen. The house has two staircases, one leading to the master suite and a second bedroom. The master suite has a king size bed, ceiling fan, television, bathroom with dual vanities, a whirlpool tub, and a walk in closet. The second bedroom (across from the master), has a beautiful queen size canopy bed, a fireplace, sunset views, and a 3/4 bathroom. At the opposite end of the house, there are FOUR additional bedrooms (for a total of 7: one king, 4 twin beds, 5 queen beds - one downstairs, proving sleeping for 16). Linens? Not to worry! ALL LINENS ARE FRESHLY LAUNDERED AND PROVIDED! You are only 60 SECONDS from an 87 acre nature preserve, 'Fresh Pond', with a small area solely for the use of residents and guests - - - with only 8 other homes on the quiet cul de-sac street. But don't let the peace and serenity fool you: On the opposite side of the pond (3 minutes by car), there are bicycle rentals and dedicated bike paths, boat rentals of every kind, and within minutes you will find basketball courts, tennis courts, golf courses, ocean or river beaches, fresh water and salt water fishing, whale watching adventures, tremendous shopping spots, the BEST restaurants on the Cape, ferry rides to either Nantucket or Martha's Vinyard, and the JFK Memorial. And remember . . . . the excitement of both Boston and Providence are 90 minutes away. Redsox anyone?? Local entertainment? Outdoor plays, summer concerts, and the well known Minor League Cape Cod Baseball Team - as FEATURED in the great film, 'Summer Catch'! Highly suggested for a 'pre-Cape visit'! As a special gift, the primary renter will receive a GOLD replica, perfect for treasure hunting, and maybe hidden by Captain Whalen or MAYBE Captain Jack Sparrow!..Who knows what vintage objects may be found by those who go exploring . . .Too tired to explore? Don't worry: A welcome basket will greet you!
No central air, but ceiling fans in kitchen, family room, master suite, and fans in every bedroom. Gentle East to West breeze provides cooling, & 'water misters' in sunroom & on patio are GREAT!...moreless

White Pillars sits today 100 yards back from it's original construction site, one of several homes built in 1849 for an infamous Cape Cod whaler, Captain Obed Whelden. Originally on Old Main Street, the entire house was lifted and moved twice to it's present location, atop a bluff overlooking more than an acre of open space. You will definitely enjoy, 'The Field of Dreams', almost 3/4 of an acre of level land steps from the house, perfect for the outdoor activity of your choice: Touch football, softball, volleyball, soccer, badminton, horse shoes, those special 'treasure hunts' for the little ones, or working on those chip shots! Nestled in a peaceful community and only 100 yards from an 87 acre nature preserve ('Fresh Pond'), you will have the peace and serenity of a quiet neighborhood, the beautiful views of an expansive, tree lined pond, but with the amenities of a large, modern shopping center only 5 minutes away. You and your family and guests can enjoy bike rides on dedicated trails, or rent the boat of your choice to experience the beautiful vistas of the nearby lakes and streams.
BEACHES?? Only minutes away!! Some of the BEST DINING on the Cape is easily within your reach . . . But, you may find your choices to be difficult! From family dining, fast food, FRESH SEAFOOD, steaks, poultry, pasta dishes, or what you choose to grill on the large propane grill on the bricked patio or on the modern indoor cooking island, you will not leave hungry. Kindly do yourself and your guests a favor and visit any of the many wonderful sites for those SPECIAL gifts to memorialize your visit, including shopping at the Cape Cod Mall or the very famous 'Christmas Tree Shops', a year round shopping experience not to be missed with a truly incredible variety of merchandise of all kind! Please don't pass up your opportunities to enjoy golfing (minutes away), tennis, basketball, swimming, sunbathing, fishing, whale watching, the latest movies, outdoor plays and concerts, the famous Cape Minor League Baseball games, ferry visits to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, the JFK Memorial, or perhaps a day trip or two to visit Boston or the world famous mansions of Providence, Rhode Island. The primary renter will receive an exact replica of one of the Nation's rarest coins: The 1849 $20 Gold Piece, beautifully encased in solid acrylic. For your children, imagine what they would write if instructed to write, 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation'! Well, they could write that they stayed in a beautiful home built for a TRUE Sea Captain, constructed when gold was discovered in California (remember the San Francisco '49's?), workers were building the home TEN YEARS before Abraham Lincoln was elected and was near areas where ships and soldiers were being prepared for the Civil War. Most importantly, White Pillars is a FAMILY FRIENDLY home, specifically decorated to capture our great history, with an emphasis on it's nautical background, without any 'parental fear' of those common children accidents. I'm a parent and I KNOW accidents happen. Enjoy the piano, the pool table, the large sun room, the 4 television sets, a large library of great books and children's games, and the short walk to the INCREDIBLE antique library of the South Dennis Historical Society. Family vacations, family reunions, birthday celebrations, special anniversaries, WEDDING RECEPTIONS, or just the opportunity to get away, White Pillars welcomes all!
About: During my career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, I had the opportunity to work as a Sergeant and later as a Lieutenant at the Department's 'Special Enforcement Bureau', commanding 6 SWAT Teams, 20 police dogs, the horses, the boats, and air/sea/land search and rescue. Yes, it was the ultimate 'DOG & PONY SHOW'. But that 24 hours a day, 7 days a week schedule? I've been retired for over 25 years and STILL answer the phone with the same question: 'Where's the command post?' However, having had the honor of meeting three of our Presidents, Queen Elizabeth II and her Husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and His Holiness Pope John Paul II, I am blessed with memories and stories I will always cherish. I think. To my regret, I had NO IDEA I would actually meet the Queen of England, thus I had NO HINT of 'British Royal Protocol'. So, if ever asked by Scotland Yard, I'll deny that: 1) I didn't bow to the Queen; 2) I DID speak to Her Majesty . . . FIRST!; 3) I turned my back on the Queen; and 4) I TOUCHED Her! Gently. But so did Michele Obama. It happens. The stories with President Reagan and Pope John Paul are as humorous as they are moving. Their genuine warmth and kindness touched me deeply. Oh - - -The 'USC' banner you might see at White Pillars? SIX of us are members of The University of Southern California 'Trojan Family', so feel free to jump and dance as you're shouting, 'FIGHT ON!' - Outside, please. Like I did when I caught a TOUCHDOWN PASS from Heisman Trophy QB Matt Leinart. OK, OK, it was on a practice field. But he saw talent and let that pigskin fly! What do I do NOW? Spike it? Dance? Then I remembered those tuition checks and how many footballs that money would buy. As I made a hasty departure 'as a pregnant guy', a sweet elderly lady asked, 'When are you due, honey?', I knew my 'disguise on the fly' was a success. My baby? Tommy Trojan sleeps well, having been signed by (4) U.S.C. Heisman winners and Coach Pete Carroll!
Why West Dennis:
Imagine the excitement you, your family and friends will have while vacationing on beautiful Cape Cod and relaxing in a true piece of 19th Century American History as opposed to a cramped 'Cape Beach Cottage'. The house is decorated with a nautical theme, a tribute to the original owner, Captain Whelden, a global whaling Captain. White Pillars was constructed a full decade before the election of President Abraham Lincoln and stood tall and proud during the Civil War, not far from the ports where Union ships sailed South to battle the Army and Navy of the Confederacy. Imagine telling the stories of our Nation's history to your children when it's very survival was threatened, slaves were freed by the 'Emancipation Proclamation', and the battle on the fields of Gettyburg were taking place in nearby Pennsylvania, followed later by Lincoln's immortal 'Gettysburg Address'. YOUR vacation will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience both American History and enjoy a relaxing vacation with a wide array of activities which can't be beat.
