Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2010
I've dreamed of living in France for as long as I can remember, and luckily I have a very flexible husband!
We live in Seattle, the jewel of the Pacific Northwest, on a few acres with 3 horses (and 2 cats). Horses and horse showing are our passions.
5 years ago, my "move to France" dream started to be realized. We were drawn to the Saumur, since it is the headquarters of the Cadre Noir and the heart of the French horse community.
"Just looking" quickly turned to "buying" when we found a small farm about 20 minutes from Saumur.
"La Maison Neuve," the 200+ year old cottage on the property, will eventually become our home, along with the horses and cats of course.
Why the Owner Chose Saumur
Saumur is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in France. The castle sits high on the limestone cliffs and the shining white structure is visible for miles. The entire city is built out of the local limestone (tuffeau). No other place in France shines as white and elegant. Look for the beautiful carvings on the medieval half-timber houses around the square. We share this with you at Le Palais.
Surprisingly, while B&Bs and hotels exist, there are precious few self-catering apartments available in central Saumur.
We looked long and hard for the perfect location and ambiance. After careful renovation, Le Palais is ready for you to enjoy!
While strolling the incredible Saturday market is my favorite pastime, the rest of the city has so much to offer! Romantic restaurants, chic boutiques, wine tours, visits to the mushroom farms in the ancient troglodyte caves. Travel a little further to theme parks, zoos, ancient chateaux, abbeys and churches in nearby villages.
And perhaps a visit to LeMans raceway? Merely an hour away via high-speed roadways. Or if your tastes lean toward the arts, visit Angers, only 40 minutes away. It is the home of the renowned "Unicorn Tapestry," huge and well-preserved. The boutiques and restaurants are excellent here, too.
The Unique Benefits of this Apartment
Saumur is best enjoyed "a pied" - a true walking city. Exiting Le Palais, turn left down the lane and find yourself on the Place St. Pierre with its open air cafes, bistros, boulangeries and boutiques.
If it is Saturday, you'll be greeted with a burst of activity from the open-air market, which stretches in all directions and offers everything from fresh vegetables, breads and pates to jewelry, Paris handbags and the latest French fashions.
While you can easily entertain yourselves in-town for days, there are many attractions a short car trip away... chateaux, vineyards, museums, and my personal favorite, l'Ecole Nationale d'Equitatione (ENE), the home of the Cadre Noir horse troupe. This complex hosts internationally recognized horse shows where the world's finest horses and riders compete.
A visit to the gleaming white Saumur castle is a "must." It rises high above the old city walls and is a short walk from Le Palais.
Venture still further upward to the troglodyte caves carved into the cliffs centuries ago, now housing both wine "caves" and mushroom farms, famous for supplying Paris restaurants with all their mushrooms.
Choices of vineyards and vintners to visit are virtually limitless. You must sample the Loire "Vin Petillant" - the regional version of champagne - it is addictive!
Our favorite and oft-repeated ritual is a stop at the boulangerie around the corner from le Palais, for croissants fresh out of the oven. Then, a stop for coffee at Bistrot de la Place, just a few steps away. It is busy on market day so get a seat early!
Some English is spoken in the majority of shops and restaurants, even by the hawkers in the Saturday market.
Your host, my dear friend Fany, is a fluent English speaker and life-long resident with a wealth of information about the area.
