Nestled in the Chippewa National Forest 3 1/2 hours north of the Twin Cities and 5 minutes out of Remer is 17 acres with a handscribed log lodge on Upper Milton Lake waiting for you to come relax and enjoy nature. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise with eagles, osprey, herons, bitterns and many other songbirds calling it home. The North Country National Scenic Trail intersects the driveway lending access to miles of trails and wilderness where you’ll find wildflowers, berries, grouse, woodcock, deer, bear, and timber wolves. Whether you want to cast a line off the floating dock in everyone’s “secret” fishing lake, gather around the campfire watching the northern lights or sit cozily inside by the fireplace this Northwood’s retreat is the place for you.

Come get away from it all, no *phone, TV, or internet just the call of the loon to wake you in the morning. The log lodge was built in the 1980’s by the owner and her husband with the logs taken from the land on which the house stands. The shoreline with its water lilies floating alongside the dock was left natural so all could enjoy the way nature intended it to be.

The Lodge is 2 ½ story walkout with deck around the main level. The upper loft is a bedroom with a queen-size bed overlooking the living room and a panoramic view of the lake. The main floor has an open floor plan with kitchen, dining room and living room with newly installed airconditioner. The gas fireplace is ready with a flick of a switch. There is also a bedroom with twin beds and a full bath on this floor. A spiral staircase leads to the lower level that has a bedroom with queen-size bed, a family room with pull out couch, full bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room.

New Screen House overlooking the lake.

Down at the lake is a floating dock with 2 kayaks, paddleboat, 12 ft fish/rowboat and a Otter Island swimraft

Our family really enjoyed our stay at this rustic cabin. The title said "Log Lodge" but the picture did not quite convey that it is a real log cabin. Our family really likes the water, so we spent a lot of time in the various boats the owner had available. The water lilies were in bloom and looked fantastic. The owner provided excellent service and kept in touch as we went though the rental process. Recommended!

Owner response: Thanks for visiting the Northwoods log lodge. Those logs were all peeled by me and the log work done by my late husband, Roger. It was a labor of love. I am so thrilled I can share this house and people are able to appreciate nature.

We enjoyed a great week at Northwoods Lodge and loved having pretty much our own private lake. The kids had a blast swimming from the swim raft and we loved watching the hummingbirds off the back deck. The Forrest History Museum in Grand Rapids is worth a visit as too were the Turtle Races in Longville. Otherwise the adults enjoyed the privacy and the quiet surrounds and the kids always found something fun to do. Thanks for sharing your cabin and for the delicious gift basket of honey.

My family and my best friend's family went on our very first vacation EVER to the Lodge from Aug 12-20, 2011. Since we had no experience in this whatsoever I was thankful for the owner's help and guidence in planning and learning what to expect. One of the best peices of advice she gave was 'just bring your food'... and that was very accurate. The Lodge is super-secluded, we arrived at night- so it was a bit of a challenge seeing everything- but we managed. The home itself is HUGE, spacious and so pretty. The pictures quite honestly do NOT give the place justice. We learned that anything we could possibly need was indeed provided; linens, towels, detergent, soaps, kitchen items (coffee maker/expresso machine/crock pot/blender/toaster) All the plates, utensils, pot/pans, glasses- EVERYTHING was there and ready for us. It should be noted there are 2 bathrooms (this is something I didn't know going in)/ Since we had 2 families it was perfect. My family stayed in the loft (The owner bought a new air matress to help accomodate) and my friend's family stayed downstairs. The upstairs kitchen is spacious and we had more than enough room for our party of 9. The best part for me was waking up and having my coffee out on the beautiful deck with the hummingbird feeder - I could watch those birds all day! We also spent time playing cards in the newly built gazebo. The guys in our group tried their hand at fishing on the lake- but the ladies enjoyed getting out to the otter raft and just sitting for hours in the middle of this SECLUDED and peaceful lake. Things to keep in mind: The tv is for dvds- if you have people used to a lot of tv shows or video games, you may want to bring them (it's harder for kids to adjust to 'nature' lol). HOWEVER- there are MANY games (board games, badmitton. bocce ball, etc) that help pass time. There probably wont be great cell phone reception- the best spot for that was right on the middle-edge of the dining table. The lake is natural. We decided not to swim in it- but did go swin in Graves Lake at the end of the drive to this lodge. Lastly: besides a place of total peace and tranquility, the owners are SO SWEET and accommodating. We plan to make this an annual trip for our families!! Thank you to the gracious Owners!

Owner response: Thank you for your wonderful review. This is exactly what we are striving for guests to have, beauty of nature, peaceful setting and a relaxing time. We are continuing to make improvements to make it even a more wonderful time. A new central AC is being installed this fall along with new carpeting in the basement. Fall and winter are other great times to come. The peak fall colors are the last 2 weekends in Sept. and early Oct. It is also a great winter getaway with trails for any winter sport out the door. Thanks again. Eileen & Ed

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1977

About the owner: My husband, Ed & I are owners of the Bar Bell Bee Ranch in Squaw Lake. We own 1000 bee hives along with 2 horses, 3 dogs, and one old cat. We love gardening, fishing, traveling, birding, and cooking and reading. Unfortunately there just isn't enough time in the day for all the things we love to do. We are recently married after both of us lost our spouses of 25 years to cancer. The house is the house my first husband, Roger, and I built by ourselves. I am renting it so hopefully I can keep it as I love the place. You just can't find a place as serene and relaxing as Milton Lake in the Chippewa Natiional Forest.

                      Why the Owner Chose Remer:
Every time I sit out on the deck, gazebo or dock. the stillness of the northwoods, or watching the hummingbirds or hearing the call of the loon or barred owl refreshes my spirit. The wildlife abounds in this undisturbed piece of heaven on earth. I was called to this land in 1978 from an add in a shopper. After walking the land and seeing the beautiful lake and how undisturbed it was I knew I had to have it. We carved our home out of the woods and lived in a teepee the first 6 months we lived there. I have been so lucky to experience the wildlife encounters I have had. I have delighted in seeing otters on the lake, beavers swimming along the canoe, catching crappies, sunnies, northerns and bass, shooting my first deer, hearing the wolves and coyotes howling. Just how many people get to experience such a rich life as I have had living on Milton Lake? I am hoping many of my guests experience and create memories that are so rich as I have.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The unspoiled Chippewa National Forest is right at the front door. The North Country National Scenic Hiking Trail intersects the drive into the house. Milton Lake is a natural undamaged lake that has loons, swans, eagles, ospreys, bitterns and many ducks calling it home. Plus it is everyone's secret fishing lake. A person can walk for 5 miles right out the door and never step on private property. It is a fantastic place to watch wildlife, hunt, fish, ride horse, mountain bike, kayak, or canoe. Winter is especially beautiful with the snow on the trees. Many times you feel like you are in a winter wonderland. The swamps tucked away in the woods are accessible then and always are fun to snowshoe to.
