Breathtaking Nbc-TV House, Jungle/Spring Fed Pools, Paradise!!

With more than 15,000 square feet under roof, this immersive tourism 'Eco Lodge' experience is everything one imagines a stay in Costa Rican paradise to be. The house perches on the edge of that valley providing incredible views of the birds as well as the jungle spread out below and the volcano looming over the far side of the valley. Days start with a chorus of bird songs as they wake up and prepare to migrate down the valley.
These views were one of many reasons that NBC chose to shoot part of their reality show, 'Love In The Wild,' here. Costa Rica's most authoritative travel websites have reviewed the property and 'Highly, highly recommend it for groups and families...'
The kitchen/dining room area accommodates up to 30 people. There you will often find bunches of bananas and coconuts hanging from hooks and ready to be used. Large, locally made wooden tables provide functional preparation and dining area and there are propane and wood fired stoves as well as a microwave, toaster and coffee maker. There is also a brick grill/oven with a motorized spit large enough for a full pig or a half dozen chickens if you decide to have a party. The kitchen has everything that you need to prepare your own meals.
Or you can take it easy like most of our guests do and let us do the cooking for you! Meals are family style and dishes are decided based upon what is fresh and available. Breakfasts are $5/person and typically include eggs made the way that you like them, beans and rice, (a staple of every Costa Rican meal,) mountains of fresh fruit, fried plantains, bread or arepas, (south American 'pancakes' with or without syrup,) fresh juice and tea/coffee. Lunches and dinners are $10 and $15/person respectively and feature salads, fresh produce, hand made sauces, rice and beans, beef, pork, chicken or fish, fresh fruit and juices, local cheese, deserts and tea/coffee. The food is regularly described by guests as the best of their entire trip. Notice needs to be given the day before for breakfasts and in the morning for lunches/dinners. There are also a large number of restaurants and other dining options available. Chef Service/Catering can also be arranged.
There are a variety of ways for you to enjoy your time here including MILES of maintained paths created over the course of nine years. The paths are lined with carefully selected plants and the forests have been very carefully maintained to achieve a blend of cultivated fruit and sustainable gardening, park land and virgin forest.
By using proper plants and sustainable permaculture techniques, we've achieved a unique experience here. Maintained grounds gradually give way to more rustic views, which gradually blend into permanent, untouched, virgin jungle. One of the trails ends at a stream that cuts its way down through heavy plant growth and a unique, 'weeping wall' of black earth that is covered in a variety of orchids.
Along the way you'll discover not one but two swimming pools. One is slightly more conventional with maintained plants and gardens around it and is fed by pure spring water. The other is hidden at the end of a hike to the bottom of the valley next to the stream. It is fed directly from the little stream, there are NO CHEMICALS used in either. Just a continual supply of fresh, clean water flowing into the pools and then back out into the stream. Two German guests recently described their hike to the waterfall and enjoyment of the river pool as the best thing that they've done so far in Costa Rica, saying that the river pool looked as if it had been built by elves and had a 'feel of magic to it.' The River Pool is only sometimes available, as it is prone to flooding after heavy rains. However both are excellent spots for secluded picnics and relaxed enjoyment... either alone or with special friends.
Back at the house you'll find that the line between indoor and outdoor living has been blurred. Huge bedrooms open out onto balconies and a variety of sitting areas, all of which are appointed with interesting curios, wall art and a profusion of plants. Several of the rooms are connected via open hallways lined with tropical gardens instead of actual walls, providing the perfect balance between security and the impression of living right in nature itself.
The natural flow from the balconies into the dining/kitchen area take you past a small, bamboo paneled bar that is right next to a sitting area with a stereo and which easily converts into a dance floor. Further down is the large hot tub, just above a covered 'Ranchero' that is perfect for meditation, yoga or martial arts practice. The hot tub is built into the actual building and is quite large, so it takes several hours to warm. Please give notice if you intend to use it so that it can be made ready for you!
The hanging bunches of bananas attract toucans and other birds. While writing this I was watching a Keel Billed Toucan munching away on a plantain with great enthusiasm. Other animals in the area include kinkachoos, a dizzying variety of lizards and loads of other animals.
A guest recently described his experience here by saying, 'It takes a minute to sink in that this is not a zoo and not an animal reserve. It's an actual house, right in the middle of paradise and all of these birds, animals and everything else are real, here and natural!' I think that his comments sum up the experience here quite nicely.

Had an amazing time here for 3 nights with 8 of my friends. Jon, William and Seneca (even Luna and Paco) took great care of us. The lodging was clean and comfortable (just dont leave your doors open during the day\night because something might crawl in). The pools were clean and lots of fun to take a morning swim. Make sure to hike around the property - you will see some really great plants and animals. The photos are accurate in the listing - just wish they were bigger! I would definitely recommend this property and I would stay here again. Its a little hard to find (especially at night) but well worth it. Don't be afraid to ask William for help in town or setting up activities - everyone is very helpful here!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: It was a real pleasure to spend time with your group! It is always such a joy to have people from different backgrounds who all seem to respond so positively to the unique setting in different and yet equally enjoyable ways. I know that I had a great time enjoying your company, swapping stories over dinner after your activities and taking you out to the local cantina for karaoke. Groups like your make me feel very lucky to be doing this and we'd all love to have you back!

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not your typical hotel stay…it is far more unique and adventurous. The property and grounds are perfect for those who enjoy the outdoors and appreciate a very natural experience. From the very beginning, everyone was extremely helpful. William coordinated all of our activities, Jonathan greeted us upon arrival, and Seneca kept our group well fed. Even more so – they were always willing to answer questions, provide recommendations, join our group for drinks on the balcony, and help out in any way needed. If you are looking for the type of experience where you can wake up to the sounds of nature, hike through your “backyard” to a waterfall, and have warm and gracious hosts – then this is the place for you. My only caution (and I use this word very loosely) is the gravel road that leads to the property…we weren’t expecting the bumpy ride, but after driving it once we had it mastered (our SUV rental choice also helped). Overall - our entire group of 9 had a fantastic time at Princesa de la Luna!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers.

Our room was ventilated to say the least, you could see through the walls. We had cobwebs and spider webs on the wall above our so called luxurious mattress. Bathroom full of mosquitos and flies. I would not recommend, unless you are into tenting it. Access by long dirt road. For the money you could do much better.Owner response: This group of retirees chose to extend their time elsewhere without notice to us, then requested a refund after the fact. Our rental agreement clearly states that payments are non-refundable in the event of a no show, as there is no way to re-book those dates on short notice. They threatened to write a bad review if we did not pay and here it is. Thankfully their claims are ridiculous. The rooms are clean, not full of cobwebs, and there is, of course, hot water. And while this “reviewer” claimed that the pictures were misleading, review after review after glowing review has said how the opposite was true; that the pictures don’t do the beautiful Princesa de la Luna justice. There’s a reason why NBC chose to film here, a reason that becomes particularly clear when you check our earlier reviews and when you go to trip advisory sites and search for Princesa de la Luna in La Fortuna de San Carlos. Out of 32 additional reviews the vast majority are 5 out of 5 stars. The one bad one was unfortunate and we took responsibility for it. It was also shortly after the doors were opened and before we acquired our current staff, including the former chef from The Springs Resort and Spa. I am always saddened when any guest isn’t completely satisfied. Thankfully the mass of other, overwhelmingly positive reviews are there to provide a more accurate picture. We look forward to welcoming you to La Princesa de la Luna soon!

The pictures on the site doesn't do the property justice. We were amazed at how beautiful the property was. The River, Waterfalls, amazing plants and breathtaking views are all yours...no crowds or tour guides. If you want a private oasis away from it all this is it. If you're looking for crowds this is not the place for you. I wished we could have spent our whole trip here. Jonathan has done amazing things both with the home and the property that surrounds it. All the living areas are open air, only the bedrooms and bathrooms have walls (except the outdoor shower)..It is as if you are part of the jungle. The trails throughout the property are amazing, we hiked up river to the waterfalls and enjoyed our lunch sitting on a big rock in the middle of the river without any disruptions from other people. Luna and Paco the resident dogs were an entertaining addition as well. We will be back again next year for a longer stay.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you so much for sharing your thougths, April. We hear that comment about the pictures not doing the property justice from everyone who visits here. Part of it is that online listings like vrbo simply don't allow for large enough pictures and trying to condense larger ones in order to show them here doesn't work well. The other part of the challenge is that one simply can't capture panoramas and display them effectively online! The impact that the property has on people is always enjoyable to watch; adults will walk onto the main balcony, stop in their tracks and stare with their mouths open while kids will yell, "This is awesome!" and run excitedly from one part of the house to another with the dogs in tow before tugging at their parent's sleeves and asking when they can go down to one of the pools. Still, it sounds odd for us to say that people will enjoy themselves and wish that they had come here first and/or arranged to spend their entire vacation here. After all, what else WOULD we say? So thank you for the kind words and unbiased opinion. It was a pleasure having you here and we definitely look forward to hosting you again next year!

Jon and William were warm, inviting and interesting and helpful in every way! I'd say that if you are looking for the manufactured, "Disney-style" Costa Rican experience, then look at the Springs Resort at $400/room/night. But, if you want an experience that is closer to the real Costa Rica, (albeit it in much better than average surroundings,) then you'll really enjoy Princess De La Luna. The property is located less than 10 minutes from La Fortuna but seems like it's in a peaceful, delightfully foliated world of its own. Princess De La Luna is an "indoor/outdoor house" full of character and authenticity. Only the bedrooms are actually inside while the rest is covered porches and verandas with plants growing all over so it seems like a garden. It is magically rustic, has a wonderful view of the volcano and provides expansive vistas of the surrounding CR forest and hiking trails. We particularly enjoyed the afternoons (we visited in June, the rainy season) after our daily adventures, as the rain came in promptly at 3:30 and the temperature cooled with the soft CR breeze. We sat on the porch drinking Imperials and enjoyed the show of nature and only wished we had a dozen more of our closest friends with which to share the adventure. All in all, it was a memorable experience and we will not soon forget it!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Jon and William were warm, inviting and interesting and helpful in every way! I'd say that if you are looking for the meticulously designed and maintained "Disney-style" Costa Rican experience with daily maid service, 100% egyption cotton sheets and climate controlled comfort, look at the Springs Resort @ $400/night. But, if you want to KIND OF experience Costa Rica (city-slicker style, because, let's face it...Costa Ricans live in shacks) then you'll enjoy Princess De La Luna. The property is located less than 10 minutes from La Fortuna but seems like it's in a peaceful, delightfully foliated world of it's own. Princess De La Luna is an "indoor/outdoor house" and it and the property is full of character and authenticity. Owner response: The property has a magical feel to it that seems to lift away cares and concerns and it is always a joy to read such complimentary comments from guests. Having this lovely family here was a delightful experience. They were such a joy to be around and to spend a bit of time with. As often happens, we became friends in a very short period of time and I look forward to taking them up on their offer to visit them in Treasure Island, Florida.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2001
About the owner: I don't like to talk about myself all that much, but I'll say that I came to Latin America 15 years ago and fell in love with it. Over the course of that time I was involved in financial services in almost every country in Latin America and when i saw this property I immediately had to purchase it. Everyone thought that I was mad for several years. Of course no one thinks so now! :)
Why the Owner Chose La Fortuna:
It's quite simply stunning. The volcano view is everything in this part of the country and I have incredible ones. And then of course there is the type of soil and other growing conditions; I intended from the start to create a blended perma-culture environment and so it needed certain growing conditions... light, rainfall, elevation etc. And of course there is very little virgin jungle in this area outside of the protected parks. Much of what is referred to as 'primary jungle' around here is actually second growth forest. So it was both a privilege and a huge challenge to incorporate nearly inaccessible, true jungle into the project. But the results are fantastic.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
It is very difficult to find houses with the ability to accommodate larger family groups. While there are plenty of homes which can accommodate up to 10 or 12, groups any larger usually require renting multiple properties at significant expense. Here your entire group of up to 23 people can be accommodated perfectly comfortably. There are even overflow options available at reasonable prices. This means being able to keep your group together without having to worry about coming and going to multiple properties. This is something very valuable, for instance when there are children in a group and the adults wish to spend a little time together after the kids have gone to sleep.
Since we don't charge any more for having more people stay, the property also represents tremendous value! To provide beds for the same number of people in a hotel would cost several times the price.
At the same time the design is such that smaller groups or couples can rent and enjoy their individual quarters without fear of having their privacy intruded on by other guests nor of having theirs intruded upon. The unique architecture and layout provide unparalleled flexibility.
