Several (OK, 2) guests suggested that a telescope would be a nice addition and we listened. We now have a Celestron Telescope with a computerized skymap and pointing system available for guests to enjoy. (See photos) We purchased Tower House in April, 2011 and completed major upgrading in late May. Both bedrooms have queen beds with very comfortable pillow top matresses covered with 400 count egyptian cotton sheets. The newly-remodeled kitchen has new stove, sink, dishwasher, cabinets, island, granite countertops and tile floor. The property is on a sloped lot, and the main entrance has about 10 stairs that could be a challenge for some.
Besides the usual toaster and coffee maker, we added blender, mixer and waffle iron, crockpot and a supply of spices. If you like to cook this is the place. If you prefer to dine out, bring home a bottle of Julian wine and enjoy watching the sun set behind the mountains.
Bathrooms have new flooring, cabinets and fixtures. We installed central heating and air, fenced a large dog yard, tile, replaced carpets throughout and added many other improvements. Size does matter, so we added a 42' flat screen TV with Blueray Player, Satellite package, SD local channels, and digital recorder (we hate commercials).
Our juliantower website is available now to show additional property details. You can access through VRBO, but loading is slow. For faster access, search juliantower.
Our primary residence is in South Central Minnesota on a beautiful lake (Reed's Lake). We love the summers here, especially pontooning and fishing on the lake (after outrunning the mosquitoes), but as we get older, the winters are harder and harder to take. Our kids and grandkids love the the busy San Diego lifestyle while we prefer a slower pace. We purchased our Julian property to be comfortable during the worst of Minnesota winters (Dec-Feb). For the rest of the year, this newly-renovated property is available for your fun and enjoyment.

About the owner: My wife, Judy, and I are retirement age (but I'm still not retired!). We enjoy the rural, slow-paced environment where we now live in MN and we anticipate Julian will be the same country living. We have 2 big lab dogs and 4 cats. The dogs will travel with us to Julian in Dec and, hopefully, the cats will have a house-sitter in our home on the lake for the winter. I enjoy wood working, making furniture (rocking chairs, etc.) and signs. My wife enjoys gardening and quilting. We're very excited to be so close to our kids (Jim and Summer) and grandkids (3 boys and 1 girl) and hope to spend some quality time with them since they're only 35 miles away (instead of 1,500 miles!).
Note: Listings have icons showing if the property is managed by owner or property manager. We do not want to mislead, but our lisiting must show one or the other. We are in fact both. Judy and I take an active roll in managing our property, by phone and internet from our home in Minnesota. We also have the folks at Mountain Farms Realty in Julian, booking and resolving any problems. Our kids live in San Diego, and occasionally check things as well as helping with maintenance and upgrades.
Why the Owner Chose Julian: We've always loved the Julian area. We lived in San Diego for over 30 years until job loss moved us to MN where we've lived for 13 years. When we lived in San Diego, we often visited the Julian area for camping at Cuyamaca and William Heise campgrounds, boating on Cuyamaca Lake and joining in the fun of picking our own apples in the orchards and eating them all the way home. The apple festival is full of great people and fun things to do. The town is sleepy and quiet during the week but the weekends are when the tourists visit, especially during the apple festival. We are members of the Julian Chamber of Commerce and will attend the local Methodist Church during the winter months in Julian.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: Julian has four distinct seasons, something we missed when we lived near downtown San Diego. We've already sampled the Julian coffee shop and the coffee is excellent. There are lots of restaurants to choose from and most of the ones we've sampled are very casual but tasty and economical.
