This architect-designed home has large rooms, high ceilings, and all the amenities of home. It is furnished with some of our cherished and unique items, and is as comfortable as it is peaceful. The quiet neighborhood is great for bird-watching, walking or biking, star gazing, and enjoying a variety of flora and fauna.
The upstairs bedroom, with a king bed, has it's own bathroom (shower only) and a reading nook. The two downstairs bedrooms share a bathroom with tub and shower. There is a small TV/VCR in the bedroom with the queen bed, and a door leading outside to the gorgeous back yard.
Located just off the national park, near the Volcano Golf Course and the Volcano Winery, it is less than 5 minutes away from the park entrance and visitor center, so it is a convenient 'home away from home' from which to explore the Volcano National Park, Hilo, Akaka Falls, and much more.
At Kilauea Military Camp, located in the national park, anyone may use their bowling alley and gym, attend events in the theatre, or go to the restaurant and lounge.
With a half-dozen restaurants in the area, our guests have the option of eating different cuisines. Our kitchen is equipped with gas range, crock pot, convection/toaster oven, electric grill/griddle, coffee grinder, blender, electric water kettle, and other amenities, if you choose to cook for yourselves. We provide coffee, an assortment of teas, hot cocoa, condiments, and paper goods.
Our many previous guests speak for the house as well as we do. Some of their comments are shared here. California: 'Our family spans from 2 years old to 82 and we were all very comfortable in your beautiful home.' France and Belgium: 'We've visited the area before, but this place really makes us want to come back.' London: 'The bed upstairs is the most comfortable we've slept in in 4 weeks of travels!' Seattle and Oklahoma City: 'So special to have a 'home' on the Big Island. 3X and more to come.' 'Absolutely fantastic! What a great house and yard. I'd love to live here full-time.' Pennsylvania: 'Hospitality with grace and generosity, beautiful surroundings--we could not have asked for anything more at the Hale Koa Nani.' California: 'We've been coming to the volcano for many years and this is, by far, the nicest place we've found. It's a beautifully decorated and comfortable place to stay while exploring the park.' Kaneohe, Hawai'i: 'The best B&B we've ever stayed in. Thanks for your attention to every detail.' Honolulu: 'The beauty of this home is only surpassed by it's serenity. The warmth of the fire as the sun streamed through the yard...This place will forever remain in our hearts and minds.' California: 'I want to sell everything I own and move into this house.' American Samoa: 'Mahalo Nui for the beautiful and peaceful place. It feels like home.' Ohio: 'We are frequent visitors to this amazing and spiritual island, and this home is by far the best place we have ever stayed.'
Keywords: This is a custom-built house, beautifully furnished, located on the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, surrounded by tall native koa and ohi'a trees.

Wonderful stay. House is beautifully decorated, linen is first class, kitchen is well equipped, not only with equipment and appliances but with seasonings and sauces. DVD collection is outstanding. On top of all this, location is perfect, very close to the National Park and Volcano village but with a rural air about it. Garden is lovely - as are the birds that frequent it. We loved it and would stay again if we ever get the opportunity.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Hale Koa Nani was perfect for our vacation at Volcano National Park from start to finish. The home is beautifully furnished as shown in the listing's photos. Everything is very clean and well maintained. The owner was extremely helpful, both answering questions before our stay and mailing back a lost earring afterward. We were even welcomed with a can of macadamia nots and macadamia coffee cake in the kitchen...a nice surprise. The location is perfect for visiting Volcano National Park. We enjoyed the Thai Thai restaurant. We will recommend this rental property to any friend traveling to Volcano National Park.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

This is a lovely house. The owner could not have been more helpful and gracious. The house is located close to the entrance of Volcanos National Park and about 5 miles from the village of Volcano. It is amazingly well stocked with everything you might need, including flashlights, an umbrella, video system with tons of DVDs, lots of books, kitchen appliances, computer printer, condiments, and washer/dryer. It was so clean, and the owner had decorated it for Christmas when we were there. The nearby little village of Volcano has a couple of restaurants (we liked the Lava Rock Cafe) and a tiny general store. If you are staying any length of time, you will want to stock up on groceries in Hilo or Kona before heading up the mountain (although Hilo is only about 45 minutes away).Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Rebecca, Thank you so much for the appreciation you show for our house. We hope you'll be able to return to enjoy it again. Amy & Joe

Hale Koa Nani was a perfect retreat and comfy home base while exploring the island. We all needed some peace and rest and the sounds of the birds, the blue sky ( and whispy fog at times) bordered by Ohia trees was super serene. Our helper Amy made this last minute decision a good one, and was very accomidating, and prompt in returning calls, and answering questions. Great for families, or a couple looking to relax, and have peace, or have a good home base while enjoying the volcano park just seconds away or the rest of the Big Island. Thanks again Amy for all your help!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My wife and I enjoyed three lovely days at this house at the end of our 2-week trip to Hawaii. The neighborhood is secluded and quiet, and the house was well maintained. I would recommend this house to any friends or relatives who wish to visit the Volcanos area on the Big Island.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

We stayed at Hale Koa Nani for several days in late March to visit the volcano and the park. We enjoyed the home immensely. This house is exceptionally sweet and in a great location! It’s on a nice quiet street at the end of a cul-de-sac near the park and just west of the town of Volcano. The home has nice size rooms perfectly set up for a family or couples to share. The kitchen has every appliance, cooking instrument, pan and/or dish you will need to cook a full meal. There’s a full entertainment system with a great library of DVD’s and cable as well as high speed internet. The garage is set up as the laundry room and while you’re waiting for your laundry you can get a few games of ping pong in on the table located there. Joe’s father is an artist and the home is appointed with his work. I have to say that all of it was great to look at. Amy and Joe are great folks and very accommodating. As I indicated, our family enjoyed our stay in this home and we’ll definitely rent here again on our next visit the Big Island and you would do well to rent here too on your visit.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We found the house clean, inviting, nicely appointed and comfortable. After a few days of being in a high rise resort on the Kona side, it was refreshing to have a place to ourselves to unwind. One of the great things about this house is that it is a little off the beaten path, depsite its proximity to the Volcanos National Park. When you are staying in the house you have your own little world, yet it is close enough that you can go to the park in the morning, come back to the house and have lunch and relax a bit, and then go back to the park in the late afternoon. That way you get to see the lava flowing at night which is spectacular, and then it's just a short drive back to the house to fix dinner. The house is also close enough to Hilo that you can use it as a base for a day trip there. Note: there is not a lot of shopping nearby, so bring what you need and you'll be fine. Summary: We found the place delightful and reasonably priced. If we had it to do over again, we wouldn't change a thing.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed at Hale Koa Nani five times. The setting among the native koa trees is is lovely. A completely furnished kitchen simplified our stay. Since it was vacation, we took advantage of the restaurants in Volcano. Being near the Volcanoes National Park is a plus. We love the improvements the owners have made over the years to make our stay more enjoyable -- a ping pong table this stay. The local owners are very easy to work with and make sure the house is in A-one condition. Original artwork by the owner's father is an amenity few places let us enjoy. We recommend the tastefully decorated Hale Koa Nani to everyone.Owner response: We love return guests! Thank you for enjoying our house.

What a lovely home that became our retreat for the days we spent in Volcano. The property was clean, incredibly comfortable and welcoming. I loved the selection of books and movies! In addition to the many things to see at the Volcanoes National Park, we had several fine meals at nearby restaurants, and found places to shop nearby, including the swap meet on Saturday morning that had some great bargains. This is an excellent get-away that we highly recommend!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words and excellent review. We are always striving to make the house more comfortable and welcoming, and glad you found it to be so.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2003
About the owner: Amy (originally from Honolulu), and Joe (from Arizona), are both self-employed in Kona, and have lived on the Big Island for many years. In 2003, we purchased this house for our retirement in a few more years. In the meantime, we enjoy our occasional visits to the house, hosting family and friends, and the constant improvements we make to our future home.
Why the Owner Chose Volcano:
Amy's family vacationed regularly in Volcano, not far from this house, so from childhood I have had a love and appreciation of the area, the climate and the park. This part of Volcano is considered the 'dry side', so there are many more days each year when one can enjoy being outside.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love the 'quiet' of the house, waking only to the sound of birds--no traffic, no noisy neighbors. Our back yard adjoins a ranch, giving the feel of tremendous space to our property. The community of Volcano is very friendly, and reminds us of how life was when we were growing up in the 1950's--people knew their neighbors, and participated in local events. Check out the Sunday market at the Cooper Center on Wright road, but go early!! You'll find produce, flowers, prepared foods, baked goods, arts & crafts, and conviviality.
