At the end of the day watch the sunset and listen to the tides turn and at night watch the shooting stars in a clear and beautiful sky. As a visitor here one can be inspired to be an artist, go to the surf to fish, play board games into the night.... etc.
To get to Tuckernuck from Nantucket, you can hire our caretaker to bring you over in his boat. He charges $100.00 dollars for the boat ride and ride up to the house with your belongings. The boat ride to Tuckernuck from Nantucket takes about 20 minutes. The cottage on Tuckernuck is about 1/2 hours walk from where the caretaker lands his boat. At the end of your vacation, he will charge you another $100.00 dollars to bring you back to Nantucket.
You should bring all food, paper goods, bedding, everything you need to eat, drink, sleep, bathe and be comfortable for your stay.
There are no stores, no services, no public support and only some cell phone reception with your own personal cell phone.
The house is remote and situated on 10 acres of land and not even shouting distance to the next house. If you would like to be checked on throughout your vacation, perhaps you could arrange something with the caretaker (for a fee).
The cottage is a post and beam structure. There is a fully equipped kitchen (gas refrigerator, gas stove, pots and pans etc.) An octagon-shaped table in the dining area seats six. A small sitting area/living room has a wood stove. Inside the cottage is a full bath with shower. A bedroom downstairs sleeps 2 in twin beds. Upstairs, an open loft with queen and double beds sleeps 4. There is an outside shower as well.

The salt air, blowing against my face was exhilarating as Doug and Sue sped us out from Nantucket to Tuckernuck Island some two miles distant, in their sturdy power boat. We raced close by Eel Point before veering to the west, headed for the next red buoy marking the channel over to our destination island's cove and harbor. A number of fishing boats' passengers waved to us as they roared by us, heading back to the dock, presumably with freshly caught Stripers or Blue Fish for dinner that night. Just when I thought Doug was going to beach us, he turned sharply to starboard, following the channel close to Tuckernuck's shore. We rounded a point and were instantly in smooth water, headed, it seemed, for one of only two docks that jutted out from the sheltered coast line. Instead we turned to port and ran the boat in deep water right up to shore's edge, anchoring her so one could step off into dry sand. We had a lot of gear, and Far Out was easily discerned, standing alone some mile distant with a seemingly impassable moor to cross between us. We left most everything at the boat, and began hiking up Whale Shoal to the island itself. There a packed sand roadway led us in a circuitous route that eventually brought us to the cottage that would be our home for the next week. While my wife and I scouted the charming post and beam structure, Doug hopped on an ATV that was in the garage hooked up to a cart and headed back for our gear. Our lives took on a whole new rhythm as we settled into quiet bliss only interrupted by fleeting calls from passing sea gulls. At night we fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the surf crashing onto the south shore and were awoken by the ever ubiquitous sea gulls' plaintive cries. It would take a book to try and explain how special our time at Far Out was and we look forward to returning soon again.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: What a great description! I got to travel right along with you. Let's go!

We have been lucky enough to find our way to Far Out five times. What a magical place it is. The quiet, the wind, the sun and the ocean that surround this unique spot make it truly unlike anywhere else we have been. We have brought our young children who delight in exploring the paths, the beaches, the rocks, the water—an endless list of adventures and fascinations abound for parents and little ones alike. Upon coming home from our time there, our boys told stories of our time there over and over. We love being away on Tuckernuck—being so Far Out and away.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you! Come back again!

I first stayed at Far Out during the summer of 2006, when I visited this magical island with my mother, husband and 10 month old son. We have gone every summer since. In addition to a 7 1/2 year old son, I also have a 4 1/2 year old daughter, both of whom love and look forward to our time at Far Out as much as the rest of the family. I feel deeply grateful that I have been able to give my kids (not to mention myself!) the gift of this place, where they can wander freely and live for several days a year closer to nature than many of us get in our modern world.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: We are so pleased to know how much you and your children enjoyed Tuckernuck! What wonderful memories you are giving to your family. Thank your for sharing your enjoyment.

We are returning to a magical house called Far Out on Tuckernuck. My husband and I had so much fun last summer that we're going back for more. Hopefully our son and new daughter-in-law will join us. We want to share with those we love. I'm going to start collecting my reading material and work on a menu for the week. My bicycle legs are ready for the sandy roads, so now we just need to get there, from California! Our domino game is awaiting us, and I can see the beautiful sunsets already!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We've been meaning to tell you how much we LOVE Tuckernuck and Far Out. We feel so incredibly lucky to have spent time there. We biked and hiked and swam endlessly. We rose with the sun and slept shortly after dusk. Went clamming and fishing and oh, we could go on and on. We hope to return next year - we're planning on it. It'll be a light on our horizons. We think back very fondly on our stay at Far Out, and our two-year-old still talks about Tuckernuck (which in her head has attained the status of a mythical place like Narnia, and is apparently where she believes princesses go on their honeymoons...) Thanks for letting us experience your small piece of heaven for a week – SM, MADid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

I think what we love best is being together as a family and the freedom our children enjoy there. No traffic, no commerce……..after a few days, the world drops away and our rhythms return to a natural cycle. It’s wonderful to have a respite from all the busyness and technology. Far Out, a charming post and beam cottage, was aptly named, for she is all that in various interpretations of the expression. For young lovers, or on your honeymoon, as I once stayed there, you enjoy an endless, delightful isolation from other people, but not from nature that surrounds you in myriad forms of beauty. We remember certain events in our life, while the day to day goes by without nary a thought. You will always remember your stays at Far Out, for each will have some unique memory that will be forever cherished and notched in your file of wonderful times...
