I had a wonderful retreat at Soft Landing. The house was spacious, clean and clutter free. So close to the beach and walking or biking distance to downtown. I very much enjoyed barbecuing and having a fire pit in the backyard. There were so many cute personal touches that really made me feel at home right away. The house had everything I needed and more, including movies and books to browse, original artwork, and a shed full of bikes, coolers and games. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. Perfect for a family trip, a couples vacation, or a solo retreat. Things like a very fun game called "hide the dollar" in the guest book show the fun personalities of the charming homeowners, Shannon and Mark. I will be back again soon.Recommended for: People with disabilities, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, families with teenagers, pet owners, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers.

We rented in the summer and this house was much nicer than I expected. It really is a cool place to stay. The decor is nice and the entire house was spotless. The master suite was like a four star hotel. The house is about a 3 minute walk to the beach, which is where we spend half the time. We also enjoyed walking downtown nearly every day during our trip. Our 4 year old made there and back with no trouble. After dusk the backyard fire pit was like going camping, but instead of a tent we had a nice air conditioned cottage to sleep in. We enjoyed it so much we rented again for a weekend in the winter. Surprisingly the town was still lively, and we had unseasonably warm temps for a few strolls on the beach. There was a lot of drift wood to be found this time of year. We have already booked again for the upcoming summer and we expect the Soft Landing to be on our vacation roster for years to come. My wife and I hope to make it without the children some weekend. The restaurants and wine bars look like they would be a lot of fun after 9:00 PM. One last thing. For those in Metro Detroit: South Haven is a gem and there is hardly any traffic returning home on a Sunday, unlike visits up north.Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, pet owners, sightseeing.

This spot is indeed a soft landing. Beautifully decorated. Peaceful and set a bit away from the bustle but close enough to walk to the best parts of South Haven. We appreciated that the owners thought ahead about all their guests would need. My son loved the bunkbeds and we enjoyed the coziness of the livingroom fireplace. Our dog Ollie was thrilled to join us on our many beach excursions. So nice to find a place of this quality that permits pets! The recycled window artwork (painted by the owner) was also really great. We bought one to take home! Everything was so well kept and the back deck will be great for a summer visit. We can't wait to come back in the warmer weather!Recommended for: Girls getaway, romantic getaway, pet owners.

Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Hi. My name is Shannon. My husband Mark and I bought this lovely house in South Haven in the fall of 2010. We've already poured love into this home. We've renovated it with real barn wood floors, a warm gas fireplace, an all new bathroom, and a funky and comfy decor that isn't like every other cottage on the block with a Gone Fishin' sign. We will enjoy it part of the time, and we want you to enjoy it the rest of the time.
Why the Owner Chose South Haven:
I grew up spending every summer in South Haven and loved every minute of it. Body surfing in the waves, playing Capture the Flag, making sand castles during the Blueberry Festival, riding my banana seat bike to get penny candy at the corner store that has been there as long as I can remember. I always thought when I had a family, I would buy a place in South Haven to let my kid love those same experiences. Well, I now have that kid. So, I had to make good on that promise to myself.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Take a short walk to the beach with coffee in hand first thing in the morning. Take a ten minute walk to one of two parks with your kids or the dogs in the afternoon. Play badminton or ladder ball in the big yard. Take a secret shortcut to the bridge (you'll figure it out when you get there) and be at one of the great downtown restaurants ten minutes later. Read a book by the fire. Play poker at the big oak table that can seat ten or more. Uncork a bottle of red wine and relax on the deck. Watch Jaws with your friends while eating endless bags of microwave popcorn.
