- 2 adjoining bedrooms: one with queen sized bed and 2 small dressers, the other set up as sitting / TV / writing or computer area with a luxurious futon couch that can fold into a bed. A charming secretary desk makes this weel lit room an ideal writer's retreat. This room has a TV and DVD/VHS player.
Looking for a quiet retreat where you might sit back, relax, reflect and think creative thoughts? Or are you an outdoor enthusiast looking for a staging area for day trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or Superior Hiking Trail? Taking a class at the North House Folk School or the Grand Marais Art Colony? Why not share the house with fellow students and make a friend (or 2)? Is your family looking for the economy of making meals at home with enough space for some to be able to stretch out on a couch while others play games around the dining room table, while another uses your computer in the back room?
McFarland House is set up and ideally situated to meet your needs.
McFarland House is about 1/2 mile from downtown Grand Marais, directly across from the paved multi-use trail (walk, bike, snowmobile). It is an easy 15 minute walk to shopping, restaurants, downtown music venues and any festival that might be happening around the harbor area. Enjoy a small town festival, listen to music on the deck of a number of downtown restaurants and come home to your quiet, secure home away from home. You're a 5 minute walk to the Rec. Park indoor public swimming pool, whirlpool and sauna, playgrounds, picnic areas, nature walks and harbor beach. Enjoy breakfast at The Pie Place; walk to putt-putt golf and family center, visit the Allen Campbell Scottish restaurant and Gateway to Canada (visitor information center) - all less than 5 blocks away.
Whether you enjoy the outdoors as an angler or photographer, bird watcher or hunter, cross country skiier or snowmobiler, hiker, biker, ATV entusiast, canoeist, kayaker, or motor boater you will feel welcome here. Is the wilderness a place of spiritual renewal for you? Or is it inspiration for your art? Come up in the spring to do some early bird watching - see the first loons on the big Lake. Enjoy the many rushing waterfalls along the scenic North Shore Drive. Summer brings us a number of unique small-town festivals like the Grand Marais Arts Festival, Dragonboat Festival, Fisherman's Picnic, and Grand Portage August Pow-wow. Many people come up in summer just to relax and be 'cooler by the lake'. Comb the beach for Lake Superior agates or driftwood. Skip rocks in the harbor. Try something new: kayaking, charter fishing (lake trout, cohos and other big fish), pleine air painting, moose viewing from a Beaver that lands in the harbor. Or take a sunset sail on the Hjordis schooner. Autumn brings another bird migration; this time the majesty of countless hawks and eagles, as well as the beauty of changing leaf color. Winter activites abound up here: downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, winter camping, snowshoeing, ice fishing and Lake Superior is often at her most spectacular spewing huge waves and creating hauntingly beautiful ice sculptures with dawn and dusk lighting to delight and challenge the photographer in you.
With all these sources of natural beauty, it is no wonder that Grand Marais is a hub of creativity, home to many artists, photographers, writers, and crafts artisans. Many offer studio visits and tours. Downtown is home to a number of galleries: The Sivertson Gallery, Betsy Bowen's studio and gallery, Johnson Heritage Post to name a few. Special events, meet the artist and gallery hops occur year-round.
Perhaps the most profound experience we can offer you who visit this area is that of silence. There is nothing more renewing than the gentle sighing of wind through the pines or the lap of water on rock. Even in the middle of what can be a very busy summer, life gets very quiet up here after dark. Especially at McFarland House.

I just returned home from a two week stay at McFarland House. Linda was welcoming and informative about the community. The house was thoughtfully outfitted for comfort and ease. The proximity to North House Folk School was important to me. And yet I was adjacent to woods. Lovely spot with gracious owners.

My partner and I stay at the McFarland House for the week of Christmas of 2012. It was perfect for the two of us and my service dog. What a nice surprise to have the front porch decorated with a real Christmas tree! Spent the week reading, relaxing, doing puzzles, and playing games. Rico, my dog, loved the trails nearby with lots of great smells. I enjoyed seeing birds and deer outside the kitchen window various times. Very convenient to eat in or dine out. We recommend the local fish market and coop as well as the two grocery stores. We had everything we needed and Linda emphasized to let her know about anything we might want in the kitchen, that future guest might also want to have available. Everything was perfect. Upon request, Linda left out the vacuum so I could vacuum up after my dog. Linda had not previously rented to anyone with a service animal, but was respectful of ADA and welcoming. We would definitely recommend the McFarland House during any season of the year! Grand Marais, MN is a wonderful town to visit for the day or week or longer. Thanks!

Loved it - perfect spot for creating family memories

My husband and I and our 2 1/2 year old daughter stayed here during the week of the solstice festival and had a fantastic time. We thoroughly enjoyed the house and cooking our own meals and relaxing; we also loved being so close yet far away enough from the main streets of the town. The caretakers of the house are extremely sweet and attentive and were excellent hosts. We hope to be back again.

Lovely and relaxing home away from home!
Lovely and relaxing home away from home!
My husband and I, along with our dog stayed here for 8 wonderful days in early October. The house is very comfortable, well appointed and had everything we needed. It's clean as a whistle too! The location is nicely set back from the highway in a wooded area. Our dog Jackson especially liked having his own little outdoor patio area to hang out in. Linda and Mike were fabulous hosts and gave us lots of helpful information about the wonderful little town of Grand Marais which is located just a hop skip and jump down the road. A great place to stay for sure and we will indeed be back.

We just spent 8 days at the McFarland House and had a fantabulous time. The old lake house has everything you could possibly need for a retreat near the north woods. Linda & Mike are very dialed in to the needs of their guests whether you require grilling accoutrement or games to play on a rainy afternoon. We loved that there was no TV and thoroughly enjoyed kicking back and reading many of the wonderful books in the bookshelves as well as listening to the local NPR radio stations. This place is very close to downtown but thankfully not in it. We came up from Illinois with our kayaks and hiking gear and were not disappointed in the least with all the places to GO, SEE and DO. We enjoyed attending Unplugged XI at the North House Folk School down on the shore and had a wonderful time paddling lakes within the BWCAW as well as the always spiritual Gitche Gumee. Grand Marais is a perfect little harbor town for spending the day meandering through various shops to sampling the fresh fare at the area pubs and grubs. The area is full of very remote and wild scenery for the paddler as well as great fishing opportunity for the angler and superb vistas for the hiker or golfer. We had a great time and can't wait to return. Thanks again Linda and Mike!

a nice summer get away
We booked a nice summer get away at Mcfarland house. What a nice cabin. Well maintained nice location. We really enjoyed the cabin while we stayed there for a week this summer. We would recommend this cabin to friends and family. The owners were very helpful giving us information about Grand Marias. We would come back if ever in Grand Marais again. Thank you Linda

Restfull Quiet retreat
Loved my stay here, it was the second time and I will return again. House is much larger than it looks in the photos, clean, neat as a pin with COMFORTABLE beds. WiFi available is a much appreciated bonus! So quiet at night compared to staying in town with all the tourists, gulls and traffic noise. Just a quick trip down the hill to town to the best donuts, book store, and the best Ben Franklin EVER! Gunflint Trail is a lovely day trip and back home to your peaceful abode. Can't wait to return!! Thanks for opening your home to us.

Perfect in Mayu
Perfect in Mayu
Four adults stayed here in May to go to the North House Folk School and it was wonderful. Everything was clean and convenient. The location was close to town, quiet, sunny and out of the wind. The back yard was very inviting and private. The owner was so friendly and helped us find everything we needed to find in Grand Marais. Would definitely stay here again.

Our family has stayed at McFarland house twice and plan to come back again. Our two small (5 & 2) children love watching birds out the kitchen window, doing puzzles on the porch, going into town for smoothies, playing on the beach close by, swimming in the pool down the road, taking hikes, playing on the patio and so much more. We love it for all those things and the change in pace, breathing nature, being creative and relaxing together. The kitchen is wonderful to have to plan meals and relax at home. You could not ask for a better location and amazing retreat! Cannot wait until our next visit!!!!

Year Purchased: 2006
About: I am a musician. My work is demanding, I often put in very long hours, and I am around lots of people lots of the time. I need a place where I can unwind and be by myself, yet not altogether isolated. Grand Marais is just the place for me. I get inspiration from gazing upon the vast expanse of clean clear blue water of Lake Superior. You don't need to be in a house right on the lake - the lake is a presence wherever you go. My house is a long city block away from the lake, making it cool in summer - no air conditioning needed. I like to sit out on the back lawn or patio, under the huge red and white pines that surround the house and put my feet up with a good book on my kindle.
Why Grand Marais:
My work is intense at times, taking me around the world, or trapping me in my studio for days at a time. My mom lives in Grand Marais and when this property came up for sale she suggested I take a look. I bought it in 2006 and although I don't get up as much as I'd like, I know that when I can get up there, I can kick back, be anonymous and take the time to do what I enjoy. I know that my visit will leave me relaxed and renewed.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I love to fish. Fishing relaxes me like no other activity. There are so many opportunities for me to fish - quietly from a canoe on a wilderness lake or river where I might not see another boat or person all day. Or I can experience the excitement of reeling in one of 'the big ones' (salmon or lake trout) from a motor boat or charter on Lake Superior. At the end of the day I know I have a quiet place (bug free) and a comfortable bed - a home away from home. Although Grand Marais is such a small quaint harbor town, I can find the finest coffee and restaurant food equal to or better than what I've found in big cities around the world. My house is minutes away from it all.
