Great kids getaway
Great kids getaway
We were looking for a lake cottage near metro Milwaukee to take the grandkids for a week of summer fun, and this cottage on Horseshoe Lake more than filled the bill. The cottage is bright and roomy, allowing the kids a place to play while my wife and I relaxed. Everything we needed was available on the grounds, and the youngsters delighted in the bounty of old toys and lower-level DVD player. In fact the lower level walkout became their domain. The lake gets deep quickly, and has its share of weeds, but a cleared area near the dock was great for splashing. Access to a selection of life vests gave our grandson the confidence to swim off to the nearby raft. He loved floating in the cool water during a hot week. (Before we booked the cottage, I called the owner with my concern about the depth of the lake — 30 feet near the raft — and he said the rule with his children was the wear life vests whenever they went near the water. It worked for him and us.) I really enjoyed the kayaks and the chance to easily cover the lake without much effort. Although there are other cottages nearby, the view out the windows is of the undeveloped nature conservancy land. It feels quite remote. Not having any power boats helps, too. The bed of wildflowers between the cottage and the lake proved a haven for goldfinches, humming birds and butterflies. If you are a nature lover, this is a great place to stay.

The location of this Charming Cottage was perfect for our needs. It is far enough removed from the hustle and bustle without spending half the day in the car. The description of the property is accurate. The lake is small, with fewer than 30 houses on it, many of which seemed occupied year around. We walked down the drive and met a few very kind and welcoming neighbors. The cottage itself is set back from the road, which is nice, even though there's hardly any traffic out there. There's a fire pit between the road and the cottage which is well stocked with extremely dry firewood that was split and stacked. Around back is a porch looking over the lake. It's nothing fancy, just a place to relax, grill out and listen to the birds. The lake was warm enough to swim in, and the cottage is well stocked with all sorts of floaty devices, and even a sail boat, which we did not try. There are two kayaks, a john boat with trolling motor and all sorts of life preservers for the kids. The back lawn was grown out. It might have been intentional, letting the prairie flowers come back, but it could be considered unkempt by some. I didn't mind it at all. The dock is not the most sturdy I've seen, but again, it serves its purpose. As for inside, the kitchen was well stocked with all sorts of cooking utensils, which was good for us, considering we do a lot of home cooking. There's a good island to chop and mix on, and a nice little stove that even got hot enough for home-made pizza. The main bedroom is nice for a couple, and the loft is good for kids. It was a little awkward for our married friends to sleep in single beds, but they managed. The stereo works well. It seems capable of being extremely loud. We had our first listen to our friend's debut CD and it sounded great! There are a few little love seats, perfectly adequate dinner table, and a few extra chairs for lounging. All in all it was a great experience. The owner called to check in on our first night, but did not bother after that. We never saw the caretaker, but that was fine by us, since the cabin was so well equipped. I wished for a moment that the outdoor shower was hooked up, but the highly efficient water heater kept up with four showers in a row, so I couldn't complain with that. It was better than my apartment! This is a great experience for someone looking for a quiet getaway. There's nothing fancy about this place, but it is indeed Charming and provided us with at wonderful time!

Better than the Ad, by far!
Better than the Ad, by far!
This property far exceeds the ad. Contact with the owner, responsiveness to our requested dates, and follow-up after rental and taking occupancy were excellent. With the full deck off the living room and a second full deck below from the walkout basement there are two stories of well furnished Lakeview decking. The property quite easily sleeps 6 to 7 people and there is still space for naps or lounging elsewhere. The Harman stereo and Bose speaker system produces incredible sound;don't crank it up because the units' wattage power could easily blow the speakers- awesome. All of the owner's amenities are available... including boats, kayaks, trolling motor, fishing gear, life preservers, board games, videos ,DVDs,lots of linens and towels, plus complete toiletries and kitchen utensils. Supplied charcoal, fire wood, Weber grill and the fire pit let us grill brats for dinner and roast marshmallows for dessert. We had a cold snap, but the extra comforters in the closet had us thin blooded Southerners sleeping toasty warm. This is not a speed boat Lake and as we were looking for calm and quiet; it was perfect. Even during our stay, the owner called to follow-up to make sure all was well and he gave us extra recommendations for fun and enjoyment. Simply put, this is an excellent rental property and a great value for the money. As we traveled in from Texas and California this proved to be the perfect experience of a northern Wisconsin cottage, yet its only about an hour and a half north of Milwaukee evening fun.Of course, active families will find there are nearby top level golf courses in Kohler, race fans can quickly pop over to Elkhart Lake, and hikers/bikers have miles of beautiful trails in the Kettle Moraine state forest; in any case, those remaining back at the cottage have so much to do and enjoy they'll hardly miss those gone on their recreational side trips. Perfect for family vacations. Have some cheesehead fun and book this property! By the way, the posts here which reference security deposit issues are simply moot and irrelevant, as the owner now simply substitutes the $39 VRBO damage insurance, in lieu of any security deposit. Also our impression and experience has us very supportive and believing of the owners side of the story in the responses he posted;we we found him to be one of the better owners, and we have booked many times through this site.

More than what was listed
More than what was listed
I took the listing as it was posted and didnt expect more. The property is much larger than I had thought and plenty of room. The furnishings were very nice and created a true kitchy vacation feeling. The small out cottage is so cool and might be a museum piece in another few years. The location of the property is very convenient to Khiel and larger stores. We got eggs from the farm on the main road while we stayed there. We took in plenty of sight seeing as well. Check out the Cheese making. The lake itself was calm and pleasant, if there were people swimming they were not loud or disturbing. The fact that there were kayaks was a great addition to the walk out and pier swimming. Plenty of firewood was available and when I couldnt read the directions properly the caretaker did come and turn the water on for us. It looked like the previous people burned trash and bottles in the fire pit, which was disturbing. There were cig butts left around, which I made an effort to detail the owner that none of us smoked so it wasnt us. Even the angsty teenager that was with us slept in the basement with no problem or complaint. I dont know where I stand with the owner, but I wanted to add as a true commentary of the property. It appears to me this is a family area, there were other families that came and left after a day of swimming around the lake. I repeat this is not a party location, it is and should remain quiet. The no wake lake was so nice instead of the constant buzzing of speed boats. The property owners look like they have spent plenty of time keeping up with and upgrading the property. There is a guest log book in the property with plenty of positive reviews dating way back that dont come from VRBO. If you want a vacation away from the parties and buzzing, with a more roughing it style, then this is it. Follow the clearly written down rules and instructions, not that hard (except for the water for me). You sign a rental agreement per WI rules, this isnt a hotel.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS OWNER

We also did not have our deposit returned despite leaving the property in cleaner condition than when we arrived. The water did not work in the cabin and the owner did not answer phone calls or messages for the entire stay. The cabin, especially the basement, is very musty. Also, the owner has a bizarre painting of a naked woman on one of the walls which is highly inappropriate for family stays. If you want to rent a cabin in an area with little to do, has an owner that does not return phone calls when any issues arise (which they will), and you do not expect to have your deposit returned, then this is your place.

Owner response: I will not consider renting to this guest ever again. This guest was inconsiderate to my neighbors, one of which I have known for 25 years. The only reason my neighbors did not call the sheriff on these renters was out of consideration for me. They shouted profanity at my neighbor, built bonfires that could have burned the cabin to the ground and were irresponsible and obnoxious in general. I wish my neighbors had called the sheriff. I was on vacation during the same week-end and was unavailable. I have a caretaker who lives within 500 feet of the cabin. All the renters had to do was to contact our caretaker if they had any questions. Art is in the eye of the beholder. A musty basement is caused by the humidifier being turned off. I did not and will not return this renters deposit due to their violation of the renters agreement which states that "renters shall not disturb the neighbors". Renters like these folks make me not want to open up our home to travelers!
A return visit will not be considerrd. The dryer would not operate. The sailboat had cracks in the body which allowed the craft to sink during with more than 1 adult on board. Owner not communicative to our needs surfing our stay. Place left clean, and orderly; but have not received full security back since stay in august.

Owner response: Do not rent to this person. Our caretaker inspects all appliances in between rentals and there was no indication that the dryer was not working. Possibly the renter was unfamiliar with the model of the dryer. The sail boat is designed to be used with the proper plugs. Apparently this renter used the sail boat with out the proper equipment. This same renter called me again at the end of his stay to ask if he could extend his visit. I was unable to comply since I had another set of renters scheduled to arrive in two days. Our charming cottage was left with multiple soda cans etc. all across our kitchen island as reported by our cleaning crew. The cabin was not left in the condition that our other renters who received their full deposit refund had left it. The amount in question is $40.00. I have paid the $40.00 to our cleaning crew to satisfy the extra charge I received from them for the extra time it took them to clean the cabin that was left in an not cleaned and not picked up condition by our renters.

About the owner: We bought this property to have a week-end cottage getaway from our house just outside of Chicago. It is just a 2 1/2 hour drive from where we live. Our children have grown up during the summers at the lake and love discovering how much they have grown over the winter. They also retell stories of how much fun they have had swimming, fishing, sailing, building forts in the forest. our three boys have all brought guest to the cottage for long kid friendly week-ends. We own a small business and work long, hard hours and enjoy having a week-end getaway from our busy schedules of work and family.
Why the Owner Chose Horseshoe Lake:
We chose this location because it is a 2 1/2 hour drive from our house in Illinois. It is on a quiet relaxing lake at the end of a private road. The spring fed lake is 50 feet deep which means it has crystal clear and is great for fishing. ROAD AMERICA is 15 minutes away , world class racing at its best. The KOHLER company has built four major championship golf courses that are all within 30 minutes of the cottage. Elkhart Lake with QUIC QU OC golf course(one of the oldest in the state,1921) and ROAD AMERICA are both just a short 15 minute drive away. Hennings cheese factory is just up the road offering the freshest cheese curds available anywhere. They go from being made to in your mouth in less that 10 minutes. A mouth watering treat that can't be beat!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
This property is one 16 properties on the whole lake. Most of the shoreline is owned by the by the local forest preserve. There are long stretches of undisturbed shore line with water lillies all along the shore. The 100 foot long shoreline gives us access to the lake and beautiful views from the deck. The cottage is on a private road and offers complete privacy from the outside world.
