About this property

Spacious Home Close To Downtown, VCU, MCV, The Fan

This beautiful four bedroom home is the perfect place to use as home base for your Richmond getaway. This 1920 home has a lovely blend of Craftsman style furnishings and interior touches. The family room features a large sectional sofa, a 46 inch HDTV flatscreen TV with Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, as well as lots of windows and gorgeous light. The living room is the perfect place to sit down and recount the day's adventures by the fireplace or over a meal prepared in the gas kitchen, cooked on the backyard grill, or delivered from any of the fine restaurants nearby. The ample bedrooms are each furnished with 32 inch flat screen HDTV televisions, as well as iPod docking clock radios. The house also features a local Richmond art & good books on area history.

The Home: Your home away from home in one of the most historic cities in the world includes a formal living room with a dining area with seating for 6, family room with a large sofa and TV, all gas kitchen, three large bedrooms (One King, Two Queen) , and a smaller fourth bedroom outfitted as an office (but which can be furnished with a Pack and Play), one full bathroom with bathtub, and one half bath . The approx. 1900 sq. ft. four square layout is very traditional to this area, and features hardwood flooring, original craftsman design details like french doors and mullioned windows, and both vintage & modern furnishings. The bedrooms are located on the second floor along with the full bath and a sun porch. There is a large fenced backyard as well as a park at the end of the block for the little ones to play. There is also off street parking for one car and freely available on street parking in front of the house for others.

Close to everything: The home has a spectacular location which is central to most of Richmond's attractions. You can walk to historic Belle Isle and a lot of the James River Park system less than a mile away. The Fan, Hollywood Cemetery, The Poe Museum, Tredagar Iron Works, Monument Avenue, Church Hill, and VCU are all less than 10 minutes by car. Downtown, MCV, Hollywood Cemetery, the State Capital, the Confederate White House, Shokoe Bottom, and Interstate 95 are more like 5 minutes. Further afield, there is a lot of Civil War history nearby and a day trip to Charlottesville, the Smithsonian or Colonial Williamsburg are worth considering.

The Neighborhood: Woodland Heights is a tree-lined neighborhood of primarily single family homes with a small number of multi family homes. It sits between Historic Manchester (home to late 1800s industrial warehouses which are no loft spaces and retail) and Forest Hill (which features a number of restaurants, shops, and taverns). Each neighborhood is about 1 mile long, so the walk from my house to the Manchester Arts district or Forest Hill Shopping district is 10-15 minutes, and the drive is less than 5.

The beds are super comfortable. There is lots of space for gathering. Amazing hot water and water pressure Home needs TLC. Has the basics but Bring your extras - towels & paper towels. Claw foot tub is pretty high off the ground. It’s like a comfortable motel.

Richmond visit
Beautiful house with old Richmond charm in a pretty suburban neighborhood, yet minutes from the Fan and Devils Triangle and other attractions . It had everything we needed for our visit including a spacious fenced in back yard. The host was very accommodating. The overall experience was excellent and we look forward to staying there again.

About the host

I purchased this property when living in Richmond in 2006. I had just left an apartment and Richmond looked like a long term locale for me so I took the plunge and bought.

Lo and behold, everything started changing and I wound up leaving Richmond, spending a year traveling before moving back to San Francisco where I'd been living until 2002.

For a few years I had long term tenants, but I wanted to share the house and the location with vacationers, as well as use it myself a few weeks each year so it has been re purposed as a turn-key spot to spend your Richmond vacation.

Why they chose this property

I looked at a lot of homes...a lot. I saw my share of Richmond's offerings from cramped old fixer uppers to soul-less new McMansions. I didn't want either.

I wanted a house which had some character, and told some stories. I wanted a house which had modern amenities (Richmond homes really benefit from central air conditioning) and an open feel, without being freshly built and adjacent to a strip mall.

I wound up falling in love with this home because it offers a compelling blend of the old and the new. This home has large airy well lit rooms and an openness which many older homes lack, but it retains the mullioned windows and French doors and thick hardwood floors. The period details are complimented by subtle updates like the dual zone AC, and an updated kitchen.
