Fern Hollow was designed and built in 1980 in traditional Michigan-cottage style. Taking cues from old summer camps, Fern Hollow creates an atmosphere where guests can return to their youth and a time when they enjoyed 'camping out' with family and friends. Whether sitting around the campfire or the fieldstone fireplace, enjoying an outdoor shower, sleeping in the open air of the bunkhouse, or strolling the trails to the beach and playground, time spent at Fern Hollow is sure to relax the mind, sooth the soul, and return you to a time and place once cherished but not forgotten.
Fern Hollow was built by a seasoned local contractor who was nearing retirement and who welcomed the opportunity to build a replica of the building style he claimed 'he cut his teeth on' in the 1930's as a young carpenter. His experience and attention to detail show throughout the cottage in authentic elements such as a hand stacked fieldstone fireplace, French-doors, open-shelving, single-timber-hand-cut beveled window sills and a center-floor radiant furnace ideal for cool Michigan mornings.
Fern Hollow rests on 13 wooded acres and is perched on the highest ground. The cottage is nestled at the center of what was nine 100-yr old white (self-trimming) pine trees. In order to created what is traditionally referred to as the Seven Sisters that surround and protect a cottage, two of the old trees were removed, one of which was already broken in half. This stand of evergreens provide a unique 'whooshing' sound as the winds move through the pine boughs. This can be enjoyed by opening the 4 sets of French doors inviting the surrounding porch to become a part of the house creating the feeling of an open camp in the woods.
Fern Hollow has served as the epicenter for over 30 years of family reunions and many annual gatherings of old friends. Our cottage is being offered as a rental for the first time in its history.
We invite you to join in our history of spending summer days with loved ones, nature, and time.

We completely loved our time at Fern Hollow! What a wonderful place to get away with our children. The walk to the beach is short and very easy. We loved the way the house was set up. Our favorite place to sleep was in the open air sleeping room. Very private and romantic. I would encourage anyone to rent this cottage if you are looking for some quality family time.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

We loved the decor and we loved the feeling of seclusion.Just a short walk to Lake Michigan. we were surrounded by pine woods. Comfortable beds/pillows. loved the layout and exposed structure. roomy. Rustic and very comfortable. We enjoyed the screened in porch. We played games out on the table without having to worry about mosquitoes. We would recommend this place, in fact, we have talked about it too many people.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Fernhollow is charming, secluded, and quiet. It's a great place to bring books and games. Separate rooms but actually sort of communal sleeping quarters, given the walls-up-to-the-rafters open design. The separate sleeping quarters is nice. Lovely wrap-around screened-in porch. Clean, well-stocked, easy to find but secluded. (We saw a mouse scurrying along the baseboard our last night.)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children.
Owner response: All will be happy to know that we were able to relocate the Mouse family to a new home in the woods!

This place was amazing!! It was the best of all I love about Michigan. Starting with the home. Such a wonderful and lovely place! Unique in so many ways. The outside bedroom, the outside shower stall. That may have been my favorite part! I showered outside everyday. What a treat to be in the middle of the woods and be outside showering :) Even in the heat, the house remained cool as its comfortably nestled in the woods and you can open the entire place up on all sides. The porch was one of our favorite spots. Games at night and quite contemplation on the swing in the morning with the soft sound of rustling leaves and that sound I havent heard since I was a child in the mountains of the trees snapping and settling. I loved it. Just a short walk and you are in another world with Lake Michigan and sandy beaches. I would stay here again in a moment. It has everything. If you want to do some shopping Saugatuck is just a a short drive away. Thanks so very much for have a place I could create memories with my family and my father at. I haven't spent quality time with my dad in almost 16 years. It was wonderful.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.
