September 1-8 & 15-19 Still Open! Oceanfront on a Quiet Cul-De-Sac
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Oceanfront? Yes, and exactly as it should be — with million-dollar views! Savor your morning coffee in a rocking chair on the upper deck —just steps from the kitchen — while you watch the kids play in the surf or the dolphins frolic in the waves. Go back out at dusk to enjoy the sunset and gentle evening breezes as you have supper around the picnic table, then watch the moon rise as you linger over dessert.
In between, after you've had enough sun and surf and fishing for the day, enjoy the private hot and cold outdoor shower. Then, grab a one of the great beach books from our extensive library and hang the hammock on the lower, shaded deck.
If rain showers blow through, take that book upstairs and curl up on one of the daybeds in the Crow's Nest, or just enjoy the oceanfront view that goes on forever. Or, if you're feeling more active, push back the three love seats that cluster around the big-screen TV and turn on our yoga DVD.
At night, stroll out your own private walkway to the dune deck and
practice identifying the constellations (there's a great app for your iPhone or iPad to help you). Or, walk just 8/10 of a mile down down the beach to Bogue Inlet Pier and see what fish are biting. Or, push back the furniture like we do, and play some dance tunes through the iPod dock or by using one of the DVD players for your CDs. For a quieter time, enjoy our selection of puzzles and board games.
We have five cable TVs, two DVD players, some of our favorite old videos for the VCR, and, of course, clock radios in every bedroom. And, you should have no problem streaming videos on your Netflix account, or hooking up your own Wii or xBox to the TVs!
If you have trouble living completely on 'island time,' or if you absolutely have to bring work along, there is broadband Wi-Fi throughout the house.
The kitchen is fully equipped (including Jenn-Air range, microwave, toaster, toaster-oven, coffee maker, blender, slow cooker, ice maker, lots of specialty cookware and good kitchen knives with a good sharpener). The inside dining tables seat twelve, in addition to the four stools at the breakfast bar, and we provide an ample number of table settings in case guests drop in.
There are four two-person bedrooms (two of them with king beds and two with queens — two are oceanfront, and two have nice ocean views). Each bedroom has its own full bath and direct access to an oceanfront deck. The large Crow's Nest has four more single beds, and accesses one of the en suite bathrooms (one floor down) directly through a separate door, without having to go through the attached bedroom. There is also a queen sleep sofa in the living room.
While our duplex will sleep up to 14 on a side, a more comfortable maximum would be 12, with 4 of them (often kids) being in the Crow's Nest. But some folks prefer not to sleep people in the Crows' Nest at all, because they love its great views and like to use it as a refuge as the kids run in and out downstairs; others enjoy it as a dedicated media room to watch movies or the big game on the big screen.
You can even double your bedrooms and bathrooms! If you need more room, remember that this is a duplex. Subject to availability, we can offer the other, mirror-image side for you to rent as well (and sometimes at a discount). While completely private and well soundproofed, the two units can communicate through otherwise-locked passage doors on the two decks, as well as through the rain-protected carport on the ground entry level. We enjoy renting both sides to host large families, weddings, company retreats, yoga and writing workshops, and groups of home-schoolers on field trips.
We welcome children of all ages. You'll find a couple of baby gates that you can position at the top and bottom of stairs. We do encourage you to sleep babies and toddlers in their parents' room, both for their safety and for their sense of security in a strange house. Because of sanitary and safety concerns, we don't offer cribs or high chairs, but we can help you rent up-to-date ones if you don't travel with them. Do bring your own outlet covers if you want them, as it is impracticable for us to guarantee that outlet covers remain in place in a vacation rental.
'I'm bored!' Well, if the beach and the surf and books and TVs and puzzles and games aren't enough for your kids, let them ride their bikes and skateboards on our quiet cul-de-sac or along the miles of paved pedestrian/bike paths in Emerald Isle. They'll also find a basketball goal in the cul-de-sac, and, within easy walking distance are a miniature golf course, a go-kart track (well out of earshot!) a water slide, an arcade, and ice cream shops.
For the whole family, there are many other services and activities within easy walking distance: Bogue Inlet Pier, the grocery store, the ABC store, a coffee shop, a hardware store with fishing supplies and beach equipment, restaurants, a movie theater, surf shops, and numerous specialty stores. Extensive paved bike/walk paths make exploring more distant shops, services and scenery a breeze. Other adventures await you a short drive away: boat & kayak rentals, historic Swansboro and Beaufort, the NC Aquarium, Cedar Point Park, Hammock's Beach State Park, and Fort Macon State Park. And don't forget the wonderful walk along the beach to Bogue Inlet at the western end of the island.
We can occasionally allow up to two small dogs, but only with special permission and a nonrefundable pet fee of $150 per dog. Tell us about your 'best friends' and request that we email you the special provision in our rental agreement regarding pets.
There is Absolutely No Smoking in the House!
While we prefer weekly rentals (usually Sunday-to-Sunday), we will at times consider renting for shorter periods with a nightly rate that is 1/5 to 1/4 of the weekly rate. Discounted multi-week rates are available as well. Email us your questions!

Just got home from a week at Islandia, and we had a wonderful time. The house was very clean, and I can't say enough about how well stocked the kitchen was. The owners put a lot of love and care into this house, and it shows. There were 12 of us staying there and we had more then enough room, never felt cramped or crowded. The crows nest was my kids favorite, and it gave a great space for the kids to play so the adults had some quiet area. The location was perfect. We were close enough to anything we needed, had a beautiful view of the beach, but had the whole area in front of the house to ourselves! Thanks for a great week, we miss it already!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This was our fourth stay at Islandia. We come with a group of friends, and usually stay 4-5 days. Each time I've been there I've been so pleased by the comfort and practicality of the place, how clean it is, how well maintained, and how well things have been thought through. Now, this last time was a return after a four year gap. I expected to see that in the house. I was proven wrong. The place looks fresher, more updated, more comfortable and better maintained than ever. There isn't a chip, a crumb, a scratch anywhere. I dare you to find one. The kitchen is so well stocked I was able to make absolutely whatever I wanted without having to improvise for lack of equipment, utensils or containers. The view from the deck is painting-worthy, the light is amazing, the bedrooms are comfortable, the bathrooms impeccable. Things are labeled where anything might be confusing, there are no "I have no idea what that does, better not touch it". Overall, a 10/10 and I would recommend this property and these homeowners to anyone. Enjoy!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Our large family enjoyed a terrific vacation at Islandia West! The location is great, right on the beach, and we had plenty of room to enjoy our stay. We really liked the privacy at this place. The owners keep everything in good repair and are responsive to any problems that might arise. The deck is great for tanning, and there are plenty of outdoor chairs to use to soak up the sun or enjoy the lovely view. Highly recommended!Did you find this review helpful? My wife and I rented this house with some friends for a week. The location couldn't be nicer. We were all impressed by how immaculately maintained and clean the place is. It is very bright and cheery inside and the beautiful beach is right off the deck. Everything about the house was at least as good as represented and typically better. It is amazingly spacious and we entertained guests while there. There's more than enough cookware and dishes to make your own meals if you wish but there's no shortage of restaurants either. We couldn't have been more pleased and would love to return. There is plenty of parking for cars and outside access directly from all the bedrooms. For dining out, we'd recommend Flipperz and especially Rucker Johns, which you can walk to. And don't miss the aquarium on Emerald Isle. The week flew by and was most enjoyable. We would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. D & PRecommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

This house is beautiful (truly impressive) and the location is GREAT! The kitchen is very well stocked with dishes, silverware, pots and pans, utensils, small appliances, casserole dishes, even plastic containers for food leftovers. The layout is excellent, with three bedrooms below the living area, and a bedroom on the same level as the kitchen/living area. This was especially helpful as my mom (who recently had knee surgery) did not have to navigate any steps (except when we were going somewhere). The loft above the living area was a great place for the kids to hang out! We really liked the fact that there were two tables in the living area. We used one to eat and the other for playing cards or building a puzzle (which were very nicely provided). There are games, movies and books also provided. The house is very clean and very well-maintained! Austin has a beautiful beach home that he truly cares about and evidenced by how well he takes care of it. He is kind and honest and a joy to work with! The house is exactly as it is described. You walk down the steps onto the beach, which is lovely. The house is close to Emerald Plantation, a small outdoor mall with a Food Lion, a restaurant, a pizza place and small shops with very nice gift items. This was my first time ever using VRBO and I feel truly blessed that I found Islandia East! I would recommend this house for many reasons. It is located in a quiet cul-de-sac not far from the bridge, close to shopping, restaurants, a grocery store and right on the beach. It has a great layout, with a bathroom for each bedroom. Blankets and extra pillows are provided, and each room is tastefully decorated. The kitchen is well-stocked with everything one would need. The washer and dryer in the "laundry room" are convenient and there are extra light bulbs, a ladder, baby gates, a fire extinguisher; Austin has taken care to ensure that if you need it, it's there. We had the pleasure of meeting him on the morning of our departure! I can honestly say that I was nervous at first, renting a house sight unseen (except for pictures on the internet), but I was truly impressed. Our stay was great, my family loved it, and I look forward to a time when we can all get together and stay at Islandia East again! Austin, thank you for everything; my family and I are most grateful. We had a wonderful time at your beautiful beach house and we truly appreciate the opportunity to enjoy this most magnificent home.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

We thoroughly enjoyed are stay - you couldn't ask for a cleaner, well stocked home. Perfect location for local restaurants, food store, shops - all within walking distance. Walking the beach each day was delightful. Sitting each day on the deck enjoying our morning coffee - peaceful. Austin & Margaret were there to greet us and we knew immediately that we were going to be extremely comfortable in their home. Would highly recommend this for anyone needing a quiet get-away or family gathering.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

What a wonderful property! We stayed at Islandia over the post-Christmas break in 2012, and this was by far the best vacation house we've ever rented. It was meticulously clean, superbly well equipped, and perfectly located (walking distance to a nearby grocery store and mere steps from the beach). We'd highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a beautifully maintained beach getaway, and we definitely plan to return in the future.Recommended for: Families with young children, tourists without a car.

This is a very spacious house. It was clean and comfortable. We have rented through VRBO numerous times, and this is the best equipped place we have stayed in. Everything is well organized. The owner really cares about his place and it shows. We had an issue with the internet connection and the owner responded immediately and had us up and working within 20 minutes. You can't beat walking out on the deck in the morning and watching the dolphins and sea birds go by while drinking your morning coffee. The Food Lion is in walking distance if you don't want to move the car. We were only able to stay a few days due to our schedule, but this house made the 10 hour drive worth it. If we get back down this way again, I want to stay here.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway.

Great place for our Fall getaway. Our family enjoyed having bedrooms with their own baths. Dining area had lots of seating area. Kitchen well supplied with up to date appliances, dishes, utensils, and pans. The house was very clean and decorated nicely. Fishing was great and fish cleaning made easy having a fish cleaning area on first landing of steps off the beach. Shopping made easy having grocery store near by. Restaurants close by in Emerald Isle as well as nearby historic Swansboro where great. We got to witness tropical storm Sandy on top deck feeling very safe because of the large sanddune that protects the house. View was great and awesome! The owner was was very informative and helpful during this time making our vacation one of the best. I would recommend this rental to anyone.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1994
About the owner: I'm a native North Carolinian who grew up spending two weeks at the beach every summer with my extended family: mom and dad, my sister, grandma and grandpa, and assorted aunts, uncles and cousins. Those vacations were glorious, marked by huge family dinners (often featuring the fish that dad and granddad had caught that very day) and by hours riding an inflatable raft in the surf. I've tried to recreate that feeling at Emerald Isle for my own family, and for yours. We take pride in lovingly maintaining – and continually updating – a house that we, and you, will want to return to again and again. A lawyer by training, I'm a traveler by calling and a flying trapeze artist by passion. I've lived in four countries and traveled in many more. Always, everywhere, I'm on the lookout for a place to ride the waves that were so important to my childhood – whether in a huge wave pool on the shores of the Danube in Vienna or in the frigid waters of the North Sea. In exotic places or back home in Emerald Isle with my boogie board, I'm twelve years old again. Come to the beach and play! I’d love to chat with you about our beach house. Send me an email with your questions, or feel free to call me directly, anytime, on the phone number listed here on VRBO. We find it is very helpful to have direct conversations – at least by email – with all our renters. We want to be as certain as we can that our house is a good fit for your vacation needs so you will have a great experience, will want to return and will recommend us to your friends. And, we want all our renters to understand that they are guests in the home of a family just like theirs, because we believe that will encourage our renters to treat our home with the same care and respect they would want us to give their own home; that, in turn, helps us offer remarkably low rates.
Why the Owner Chose Emerald Isle:
When I returned to the States in the early 1990's after a diplomatic posting to South America, I began looking at beach houses within a few hours drive of my permanent residence in central North Carolina, in an area that had ample services but was not overbuilt. I visited scores of oceanfront houses, but none of them sang to me. Finally, I found a lovely vacant lot on a quiet cul-de-sac in Emerald Isle, and I set about designing a house that would incorporate the best features of what I had seen during my search.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We truly enjoy being able to walk and bike everywhere; we can easily park our car in the carport and not use it for two weeks. And, since we are always doing maintenance to keep the house fresh for you, we have come to love the smell of acrylic paint and caulk mixed with the salt air as we enjoy the ocean view from the top of a ladder!
