This elegant home, decorated throughout with colorful Mexican folk art, captures all the grace of Colonial Mexico without sacrificing the comfort and convenience of modern amenities. Located on a quiet side street, it is a pleasant 5 minute walk to the lovely Parque Juarez and 15 minutes to the Jardin, the lively central square of downtown San Miguel. From the house you can walk to most parts of the city but, alternatively, inexpensive taxis can be hailed just down the street.
This home's large ground floor living area encompasses an inter-connected living room, interior courtyard with fountain, kitchen and dining room. This courtyard is covered by a sliding glass roof which opens to flood the house with light and allows those sitting in the lounge chairs below to enjoy the brilliance of the San Miguel skies.
Three large bedrooms sleep six - 2 kings and 1 with twins - each with a gas fireplace, ceiling fan, and its own connecting bathroom. The two king bathrooms have showers; the twin room has a shower/bath combination. Also available are two inflatable mattresses to accommodate extras (most commonly little kids). One king bedroom is on the second floor and opens out to the rooftop terrace; the other two are downstairs off the interior courtyard. The beds are all very comfortable and the linens are pure cotton.
There is a full kitchen with all necessary appliances if you want to do your own cooking, but the maid is available to purchase food and prepare meals if you rather kick back your heels and relax. Closeby are a few small groceries where necessities can be purchased.
A beautiful brick, curved, boveda ceiling crowns the dining room which seats 8. The living room, furnished with upholstered traditional equipale furniture, is decorated with hand-colored black and white photos of indigenous Mexicans which were taken by one of the owners in the 1970's.
The plant-filled rooftop terrace, with a covered veranda, is an ideal spot for socializing, reading, and watching the sunset over the city and surrounding countryside. Don't be surprised by the sound of fireworks...it's not uncommon to spot the fiery blossoms light up the night. On a weekend morning, take your coffee upstairs and follow the paths of hot air balloons as they sweep across the city rooftops.
There are no" water worries " here: a UV- filter system irradiates the city water for the house, and we also have bottled water available.
A one car garage is available for renters with cars.

About the owner: We are two sisters -Casa de las Dos Hermanas (House of the Two Sisters)- who have loved Mexico since coming here- one of us- in the late 1960’s to study art at the Instituto Allende- and both after our parents moved from Michigan to Guadalajara several years later. It was at that time we began our extensive travels through the country, beginning in a mountainous indigenous village where we lived two months –sleeping on dirt floors and eating primarily beans and tortillas- to study hand-spinning cotton and backstrap weaving. From there we drove through much of southern Mexico and became entranced with the craft, imagination, and whimsy of Mexican textiles and folk art. We returned to the States, got jobs, raised families but our interest in Mexico continued to resonate. One of us was a Spanish major in college and did freelance writing, photography, decorative painting, and translating. The other owned a retail music store, repaired and restored guitars, and now makes jewelry, sings in several music groups and plays mandolin and guitar. It was after bringing our own daughters to San Miguel one summer to study Spanish that we decided to buy a home here.
Why the Owner Chose Ojo de Agua:
We chose a vacation home in San Miguel because of the stunning variety of activities and the captivating beauty of the buildings. Because of the industrious and diverse ex-pat and Mexican community, we can easily walk from our home to such destinations as restaurants, shops, churches, classes, museums, lectures, movies, theater, and spas...or to salsa dancing, tennis, meditation centers and zumba. And all of this cultural richness is contained within a city that is defined by its long history and dressed in colors that have inspired legions of photographers and painters.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
One of the things we most enjoy about coming to our house is being PAMPERED! Our housekeeper, Alejandra, is only too happy to take care of us, preparing delicious breakfasts of huevos rancheros or chilaquiles; lunches of chile rellenos or a meat dish swimming in a piquant salsa. Beds are made and clothes magically appear washed and expertly pressed.
We also love being able to walk to town, or to the bridge club, or tennis courts, or whatever entertainment we’ve chosen for the day. Most evenings find us up on the rooftop terrace, drinking a glass of wine and watching the flocks of ibis fly from the San Miguel dam to take roost in city treetops.
