Just 5.5 miles (10 minutes) south of OHSU. This former Simon Benson summer estate aptly named "The Riverwood Cottage Inn" is nestled along the Willamette River. The cottage was built in 1914. This historical cottage was originally the summer estate for the Benson family. Mr Simon Benson was a famed lumber excecutive and the creator of the prestigious Benson Hotel located downtown Portland, Oregon. He was also known for his 400-acre tract of land in the Columbia River Gorge, which included Wahkeena Falls and Multnomah Falls. Mr Benson deeded the land to the City of Portland for a public park. Come and see why he choose this estate for his summer get-a-way!
The cottage offers a tranquil, private, waterfront setting. It's the perfect destination for honeymooners or for that much needed get away. The cottage offers a full bath, small kitchen for light cooking. A beautiful French style wood burning fireplace. Unique hand carved cedar beams, ceilings, doors and windows. Hand made leaded glass windows look out over the city lights of Milwaukie and Elk Rock island.
The river is highly entertaining. From a pair of bald eagles who make a near by tree their home.... to the Portland Spirit that glides majestically up the Willamette. There's plenty to see and do. Enjoy watching the activity from your lounge or jump right in. Swimming, fishing, kayaking, horse shoes, jacuzzi or just taking a nap!
The cottage has one queen size bed. Linens. One extraordinarily comfy Pottery Barn sectional. Outdoor BBQ, bathroom linens, kitchen utensils, TV and VCR, plenty of games and books.
The hosts who live on the premises love to cater to their guests. Wine, appetizers and the delicious breakfasts are worth the additional $40 per day.
The cottage is located in a quiet residential neighborhood.

We have been meaning to go to Portland for 3 years and finally made our way up here, we looked around at many options with VRBO and are very glad we chose this one for our stay, and even asked for them to extend our stay. The family is extremely helpful and friendly! They made sure we had everything we needed and have an absolutely gorgeous location right on the river. The pictures look great but don't even do it justice. If we can make it back to Portland we will definitely choose this VRBO again.

The historic Riverwood cottage is lovelier than the photos can express. It's hard to capture the subtle beauty created by the 100 year old woods and windows and the serenity of Laurie and Andy's graceful furnishings. The bed is in a bay and looks out onto the Willamette. At night, the lights across the river shine in prisms of color in the smooth channel. The garden is also very old and the venerable trees and other plantings remind us of our times in England, particularly as they are framed in the lovely leaded glass panes. We were met at the time we'd arranged. All was clean and organized. We had a great hot tub accompanied by the owner's cat sitting on its edge. The fire was laid and drew well, adding good cheer inside while outside sheets of heavy rain moved across the river. We'll definitely stay again as we have family nearby. We plan on trying Laurie's famed breakfasts on our next stay.

Wow, what a find! This absolutely magical cottage, right on the river, provided me the perfect haven for work (yes, one day - ugh) and respite for the weekend. The cottage exudes charm, is very private and quiet (2 of my priorities), and is appointed so beautifully. I love the leaded windows and beautiful wide panel floors, the cozy fireplace - it was really wonderful. And I can't say enough nice things about the host and hostess. Laurie directed me in, met me at the driveway and gave me a tour of everything. She even had ready-made popcorn ready and a fire burning. I will come back again and again.

We came from Spain to visit our song and toke the decision after the advise of a good friend. The experience was overwhelming. We enjoy very much the cottage, the incredible breakfasts, the views, the river and specially the incredible family that owns the place. If you are thinking about visiting the area, you should go there.

Phenomenal! From the moment we arrived on a dark and rainy night, we were transported back in time to another era. The bathroom floor, with its original 1920s tile, the handcarved beams, the leaded glass windows that look out over the river, the city lights across the water at night . . . it simply doesn't get any better. If you are impressed by fine craftsmanship and comfortable surroundings, do yourself a favor - stay here.

Built in 1914, the craftsmanship of this delightful cottage is a sight to behold. The leaded glass, hand-hewn beams, elaborate mouldings, and 2" thick solid wood doors take you back to an era of Americana when people made real stuff instead of looking at pixels on a screen. This cottage sits perched above the Willamette River with a lovely eastern aspect. We visited in February, but it would be a real treat during the summer months when one could sit outside and watch the river flow. Downtown Lake Oswego is a short drive where you will find eateries in abundance.

In November I emailed the listing of this lovely cottage (which I had visited in person) to some out-of-country friends who would be visiting; they emailed immediately with a requested booking and were beyond thrilled with their stay, which happened in January. Laurie's graciousness, warmth & hospitality were just the icing on the cake of a cozy cottage with all the amenities, delicious breakfasts, warm fire & serene setting. Our friends overcame jet lag with glorious sleep in the comfortable bed; spotted eagles in the trees & fish in the river; had a lovely "home base" from which they could explore the area, coming & going as needed; and, most importantly, reconnected with their teenage son, who is living in Portland as a high-school exchange student this year and hadn't seen them for 5+ months. Thank you, Laurie, for adding a special touch to this already meaningful & memorable trip for our friends!

What an absolutely delightful place! My daughter and I stayed and one night hosted a family dinner (8 people at the table comfortably!) and everyone was "transported" and "mesmerized" from the crackling fire to the golden retriever "Chester" whom we borrowed from the very accommodating hosts! We felt so blessed. You will too!!!

Very cozy and warm, beautiful views and the friendliest host family I have ever met. This little piece of heaven is very easy to find and quite close to everything. I would highly recommend this cottage on the water to everyone. Who doesn't want to see a bald eagle fly past their porch in the morning!? Thanks again Lorie, my mother and I had a very lovely stay with you.

Charming cottage on the banks of the Willamette. Very clean, super friendly hosts. Late October was cool, but beautiful sunrise on the river. Enjoyed listening to geese and watching crew teams rowing by. Fireplace is awesome; nice furniture. Bed sits in a bay of windows; really elegant. Kitchen is small, but it worked great for me. Excellent writing environment, though you may want to bring a book light for evening readying. Ideal for solo rest / writing or couple looking to relax in a really inviting setting.
