The river house in the S.C. Lowcountry is a gem. Beaufort, SC, Savannah, GA, and Hilton Head Island - with an array of touring opportunities - are all within an easy drive, but even without them, the house alone would be worth the price of admission. The May River/Mackay's Creek is one of the most beautiful waterways in the world. My favorite activity is kayaking and bird watching at the same time. Once, while kayaking, I was visited by a golden sea turtle.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Birders, photographers and boaters love the location. Egrets, herons and ibises peck in the tidal pools. Dolphins show up every few days. The crabbing is great.Chickadees, cardinals and finches dart in and out of the live oaks.

In October 2011, my wife and I stayed at Oyster Manor, the home of Fran and Bill. We found this an ideal location for visiting Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Beaufort, and Charleston, South Carolina. The home is also close to Savannah, Georgia. The large, well-furnished home sits on a expansive, tree-covered lot with plenty of parking. Because of a wide wall of windows, views from the living room are always inspiring. Gazing across a wide lawn, one looks out to protected ocean waters where the tides ebb and flow each day. My wife and I were happy here.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.
Owner response: We love the expansive views and perfect location too. The Lowcountry of South Carolina has so much to offer!

My husband and I stayed at this home for 10 days in July and were very pleased with the accomodations and the location. The home is comfortable and well equipped, spacious and airy with a lovely view and close to several of the places we wanted to see on our trip. For example, we were easily able to get to Savannah, Charleston and Beaufort, and Hilton Head was just a couple of minutes away by car. There are several good restaurants nearby and it was also very convenient for shopping.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Many consider the fall the nicest time of all in the Lowcountry. The beaches are not crowded. The dock provides peaceful and interesting space after adventures of various kinds.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1965
About the owner: Fran is a retired newspaper editor. Bill is retired from his private catering company. We are boaters, environmentalists, readers and travelers with long histories in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
Actually, we live here because we love the water, drink coffee on the dock many mornings, check the garden and work in it almost daily. We have a mountain home for escape should we work out arrangements with renters for this one.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We swim, boat, crab, feed and watch birds; we entertain and take part in many community activities. Our library offers great reading on local history and culture.
