Mutiny Bay house description
Vacation on one of the most spectacular beaches anywhere. This beautiful home is on Mutiny Bay, facing due west towards the shipping lanes and Olympic Mountains. The sunny, sandy beach is mere steps from your front door. Play on the beach, watch the sun set over Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, and fall asleep to the sound of the waves splashing just outside your window.
Recently updated and remodeled, this home is light and bright with views from every window. The front yard is a patio, small lawn and low bulkhead, and the beach, and the back yard includes a lovely lawn, flower gardens, a blue stone patio and a full-sized pickleball court.
All the bedrooms are upstairs, three have King beds, one has two twins and two trundles. The bonus is a spectacular tower, with a twin bed and trundle on the 2nd floor, along with a TV and computer, and the 3rd floor tower has two window seat sleeping benches. But be prepared, the many bald eagles love this tower as it is the highest spot on the beach, and often begin their hunting trips from this rooftop perch. Bring your sense of adventure.

Charming Beachfront Home on Mutiny Bay
Charming Beachfront Home on Mutiny Bay
We rented this house for a week in July 2011, and we really enjoyed our stay. Here are some insights about the house: ~ The location is excellent. The house is situated on a beautiful sandy beach, and it faces west toward the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound shipping lanes. From the living room and front patio, we saw bald eagles, seahawks, herons, deer, cruise ships, cargo ships, and even an aircraft carrier. Moreover, the house is just 90 minutes away from Seattle’s eastern suburbs, 15 minutes from the Clinton ferry dock, 1.5 miles from the stores in Freeland, and about 6 miles from Langley. If you scuba dive, the Keystone Underwater Park is only about 20 minutes away. ~ The interior is charming, spacious, and generally comfortable. It's immediately evident that the house is a cherished family home and not just a rental house. The house is adorned with *very* interesting photos and artifacts, and charming custom paintings of the owners’ children. The dining room and living room can accommodate large families, the beds are comfortable, there’s good water pressure and nice shower heads in the bathrooms, and the kitchen is well stocked. ~ The house is not only “dog friendly,” it’s “dog ready.” There’s a chain-link kennel and a dog tether outside, the owner provides dog bowls and dog towels, there’s an outdoor shower and hose to rinse off your dog, and there’s a dog bed in the master bedroom. (And, although it’s a dog-ready beach-front house, the house is still relatively clean and doesn’t smell like a wet dog….) Notably, during high tide, there isn’t much room for a dog to run on the beach in front of the house. But, don’t fret, there's a beautiful waterfront off-leash dog park ("Double Bluff") just a 5-10 minute drive away. ~ The neighbors are wonderful. They were genuinely welcoming, they offered suggestions about things to do on the island, and we even set up a couple of doggy play dates with their golden doodle. ~ The owners’ representative (daughter Becky) was friendly, reasonable, and accommodating in all of our dealings with her. Notably, it was easier to reach her via phone than via e-mail. ~ Just FYI, the house doesn’t currently have wireless internet, and my 3G data reception (via AT&T) was spotty to non-existent on the property. That wasn’t a major problem for us, as we were in a position to “unplug” during that week. However, if you’re planning to telecommute during your stay, you should keep this in mind.

Year Purchased: 1960
About the owner: I have grown up spending summers on this beach, but now that our children are teenagers, it is harder to get away as often so time to share.
Why the Owner Chose Mutiny Bay:
When my father was just out of law school, he won money on a TV game show. He spent it buying this beachfront lot in 1960, when there were only two other homes on the whole beach. In 1962 he used an A-frame booth from the World's Fair as the cabin, which has since grown and remodeled. It is, simply, the most beautiful vacation spot in Washington that is just a short drive and ferry ride from Seattle.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
South Whidbey is a great destination, and Mutiny bay is a beautiful beach. It is two miles from the Freeland shopping area and a short drive to Langley, wineries, Deception Pass, and many other tourist attractions. Plus the pickleball court is a great way to spend the afternoon. After your numerous beach walks, of course.
