Centro Historico apartment description
This charming and sophisticated second floor apartment located in the friendly and safe Chorro area of town is just a short (four blocks), well-lit walk to the Plaza Principal (or Jardin) where you will find the most popular historic sites, museums, restaurants, shops, cafes, art and language schools. Were you aware that San Miguel de Allende was recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Many important projects are currently underway to improve and preserve this historically significant area of town.
During the hot and humid summer months of the southern States, enjoy San Miguel's perpetual Spring-like weather provided by it's Central Highland location. During the months of June to September San Miguel offers daytime high temperatures in the mid-70 degrees Farenheit followed by cleansing evening rain showers. These pleasant showers cool the evening temperatures, bring out the beautiful blooms of the local flowers and wash down the dusty stone streets. Many say it is the best time to visit San Miguel!
It's easy to fly into Leon, Guanajuato airport from many US cities. Leon is only a 45 minute drive by shuttle from San Miguel. Or, alternatively, why not fly into Mexico City and include a few days in that beautiful, historic city to begin your Mexican adventure? We have provided a link on this page to a wonderful bed and breakfast in Mexico City which we can highly recommend for your stay there. San Miguel de Allende is only a 3.5 hour ride on a very comfortable, first class, non-stop bus from the Norte bus station in Mexico City.
Our one bedroom apartment located on Callejon Piedras Chinas is just a few steps off Calle Chorro (where Chorro meets Calle Barranca). It is one of only three apartments in the building. The spacious living area is conveniently situated on one level with a bright, open floor plan and is tastefully and comfortably furnished and decorated. Some of the amenities include a 26' flat screen TV, DVD/CD player with a selection of recently released movies and a mixed selection of music for your listening pleasure. High speed, wireless internet and a small library includes some interesting novels and a few historic/reference books about San Miguel for the history buffs who would like to learn more about our wonderful town. We have compiled a helpful manual to assist you in operating the appliances and electronic equipment in our home and, for the first time visitor, it also outlines our personal preferences for places to eat and shop.
The apartment provides plenty of natural sunlight with a charming French-door overlooking a lovely courtyard with fountain. The apartment rebuilt in 2006 with modern plumbing, lighting and appliances. For your comfort and convenience the kitchen comes fully equipped for dining-in including stainless steel cookware, a French press coffee maker, serving dishes and trays, sharp knives, wine and cocktail glasses and a selection of condiments and spices.
A new queen Sealy pillow-top mattress and box spring has recently been added.
Martina will come by once a week to tidy-up and launder the linens. She is very friendly and will help encourage you to practice your Spanish. Should you encounter any maintenance issues in our property during your visit, our helpful, English speaking property manager in San Miguel is only a phone call away.
The shared. plant-filled roof top terrace offers spectacular 360 degree views. The views include the domes and spires of the many Centro Historico churches and the Parroquia (beautifully illuminated in the evening), the presa (reservoir) and mountains in the background. From the roof terrace you will experience some of the most amazing sunsets!
Why stay in a hotel or bed and breakfast while visiting San Miguel when you can have all the amenities and comforts of home in this beautiful and spacious apartment for under $35 per night (based on a one month rental term)?

Perfect Place in "The World's Best City"
Perfect Place in "The World's Best City"
Most savvy travelers know that CONDE-NAST readers voted San Miguel de Allende the #1 travel location in the world for 2013, a well-deserved honor for this gem of a city which we have visited nearly 25 times since 1996. And after all these visits we have found the PERFECT place to stay. For our last three visits we have called Piedras Chinas #3 our home. We have settled in for the month of August and loved every minute. The owners' description and Joseph's review state things perfectly. The apartment is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped, bright, nicely furnished, and well-situated. This is the middle floor apartment of 3 condos sharing the same footprint, but during our stays, there has been no one else in the building. (I believe all the units are owned by Canadians who are up north during the summer months.) But even if other folks were there, that would be no problem. Each unit has its own private rooftop space as well as a covered commonly shared space. And the views from the top are breathtaking. As we tell folks, "we've slept all over San Miguel," but having found John and Sharon's wonderful home, we need look no further. We've already booked for our next month-long stay. Steve and Jo

Owner response: Our apartment in San Miguel is, indeed, our home during the winter months, so it will feel like home to you as well. There really isn't any better value than to rent our apartment for a month or two and get to know San Miguel as if you were a local. The best recommendation one can receive is when visitors like Jo and Steve choose to return year after year. Thank you both.

Wonderful! After a month in this charming apartment I can attest that it has everything a single traveler or couple could want in a holiday home. And "home" is how it feels. The place looks good on the website but it looks great in person. In terms of amenities, I wanted for nothing. Everything was clean and tidy on arrival and easy to maintain. The owners have a clearly written house book on hand that explain the appliances, audio-visual equipment, internet and phone, and provides a list of their favorite eating spots. I have been spending about a month per year in San Miguel for nearly 10 years and discovered a few new favorites of my own based on their recommendations. The property is well managed locally and the one time I needed to call the manager about a small water pressure issue, a plumber arrived within 30 minutes to fix it on the spot. The music and DVD selections were extensive and being a film buff, I was delighted to find several movies that I'd missed recently in their collection. The neighborhood is just that - a neighborhood. You'll be just outside the busy and noisy areas which is a real treasure in the evenings and nights. I felt entirely safe there even walking around at midnight. And the views from the roof deck are spectacular both day and night. The walk to the Jardin is a snap. The property is on a hill so the walk back concludes with a block or so on an incline. I always walked home after sunset but generally on sunny afternoons I would take a bus (costs about 40 cents US) to the top of the street and walk down a half block or take a taxi (costs about $2.35 US). There's a wonderful Peruvian restaurant a few blocks away, La Parada, and a little saloon/eatery two minutes away called el Manantial that serves great ginger margaritas, delicious huge artichokes with aioli, and tasty ceviche tostados. It was quite handy to have a local neighborhood spot like that so near. All in all, it was a great month in a wonderful apartment. I highly recommend this property.

About the owner: We are a retired professional couple, who choose to split our time between our home in Nelson, Canada (May-Oct) and our apartment in San Miguel de Allende (Nov-Apr). We love the warm, Mexican winters and our friendly and welcoming Mexican neighbors. We have made many new friends in San Miguel and feel our life is much richer as a result of our San Miguel experience. John is an active Rotarian and he and Sharon are also involved with many other worthwhile causes in SMA. We have two grown children and five young grandchildren living in BC and at the end or our six month Mexican stay, we are always anxious to reconnect with the little ones, our family and our friends in Canada. During our absence from San Miguel, we invite you to our San Miguel home and hope that you enjoy it as much as we do. 'Mi casa es su casa.'
Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico:
We owned a vacation home in San Jose del Cabo in the Baja for 12 years and spent many happy times there during our family vacations. As we got closer to retirement, we began extending our time in Cabo to several months in one stretch. Although we loved being close to the beach, we often found it difficult to find interesting things to fill our spare time. We made the decision to travel around Mexico and learn more about the culture, the people and the communities away from the beach areas. Over the next four years we visited San Miguel de Allende several times....it seemed to keep calling us back! We loved the rich and vibrant Mexican culture alive here; the colorful festivals, beautiful historic colonial buildings and fountains, quaint cobblestone streets, perpetual Spring-like weather and, most of all, the welcoming nature of the Mexican locals. We also began meeting many interesting, well-traveled ex-pats who enjoyed giving back to the Mexican community that they now called home. We discovered art shows, music and theater performances, interesting movies, documentaries and lectures being held, the good inexpensive restaurants and San Miguel was also within easy traveling distance to other wonderful Mexican cities and towns that we wanted to explore. The fact that San Miguel did NOT have an international airport was also a plus...we found that those who usually chose to visit San Miguel did so with an express purpose in mind...rather than just for a sun and sand get-away....and this is one of the reasons that John often refers to this magic little town as “an intentional community”.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
As our property is located in the Centro Historico area, it is easy to walk most significant sites. It is a four block walk to the Jardin, the true heart of the town, where most of the historic sites, good restaurants and art galleries are located. It's also a short three block walk to Parque Juarez where Zumba fitness classes and Organic Farmers Market are held every Saturday morning. We enjoy walking to our favorite shops and to the public market downtown where we pick up fresh tortillas, vegetables and flowers. For those who prefer not to walk, local taxis are plentiful, easy to find and charge about pesos $30 (less than US$3) for a ride in the central San Miguel area. There are wonderful aspects of our Chorro neighborhood that we especially love; we have friendly and courteous Mexican neighbors who always make us feel welcome, we love the ambiance of living in an authentic Mexican neighborhood that is safe and quiet and we love to walk to the gym and yoga in the morning, as well as many of our favorite restaurants for lunch or dinner. When evening comes we enjoy sitting on the roof terrace with a glass of wine, discussing the happenings of the day and watching the beautiful sunset over the distant mountains. Life doesn't get any better!
