Palatka house description
Come experience a different part of Florida from the very large deck of this great river house. Bring your boat, fishing poles, the kids, and grandma. You will enjoy the large dock, complete with covered boat house, running water, fish cleaning station, lights, and floating dock perfectly suited for floats and swimming. This house has an open floor plan with split bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms open to the covered deck and have views of the river. The deck and dock are great spots for watching the boats go by. The river is 310 miles long and occasionally will host smaller cruise ships bringing their passengers to tour the scenic and historic St Johns River. This was a popular destination during the Gilded Age. The vacation this home makes possible should not be considered 'luxurious' but instead enjoyed as a return to nature.
This home is clean and spacious with fantastic views and is located very close to the boat ramp, grocery and drug stores and restaurants. You will feel very secluded but can still walk to the market. Wild turkeys, alligators, and fish are very common. Manatees, otters and other wildlife are often seen in and around the river. We have provided 2 kayaks and paddles. You will find an assortment of life and ski vest as well as several floats for your enjoyment. You will need to bring most other fishing and boating items with you.
We have a large dining room table in the 'River Room' which can easily seat 8, with views through the 5 sliding glass doors. Located off the kitchen is a breakfast table that can seat 6.
Palatka is known as the' Bass Capital of the World'. The fishing is great and shrimping is possible in August and September.
This home has been our family retreat for over 15 years. We have decided to share our home with others starting in late May 2011. It is located only 30 miles from St. Augustine and the St. Johns County beaches. We hope you enjoy your stay in our River House.

Had a very relaxed and restful time. Home was very clean and comfortable. Saw a gator (who must have scared away the local bass). Corky Bell's was a great place for seafood and drinks. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

Once again we made memories at The River House, a perfect spot for a family vacation. The home is exactly the way the owner describes it and more. Lots of room, very clean, and everything that you could want. The home is very comfortable and feels like home. During our stay we saw several manatee, eight to be exact, various water birds, alligators on a regular basis. The dock is large and easy to fish from, but if you don't catch anything there are great seafood restaurants just blocks away. I would highly recommend this home and will return. I would like to thank the owners for sharing their home with us. We are new to VRBO and I must say this was a great experience.

Our recent stay at this immaculately clean home by the St. Johns River was probably our best vacation ever and definitely the best rental experience we've had through VRBO. The house and location was just as described and actually don't do it justice. The homeowners were very attentive and the house felt just like home. I loved the well-stocked kitchen and the beautiful sunroom, complete with binoculars where you can enjoy the beauty of the surroundings in blessed air conditioning! My husband and mother-in-law loved the dock and being able to step outside and fish at any time. The kids loved the bunk beds, the hammock, the slot machine, and the lightning quick Wi-Fi to run all of their "machines" as Bill O'Reilly would say. We rented a boat from Mr. McGee which was very convenient and we were able to spend 3 days in St. Augustine enjoying all the touristy things. It was wonderful to be able to come back to our home away from home and still have time to go fishing! To top it all off, our favorite restaurant of all time, Corky Bell's, is almost within walking distance! If you love Southern fried seafood like we do, you'll be in heaven too. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this property and will hopefully return in the future. My mother-in-law was downright depressed when we had to leave! While there was only 5 of us, I can see where this property would be ideal for larger groups/family reunions, etc. I'd like to thank the homeowners for sharing this wonderful property.

River House in July
River House in July
The vacation in the River House was wonderful, beautiful view, clean comfortable home, and all the accessories we needed were provided. The weather cooperated most of the time but even when it rained we enjoyed the home playing games, watching DVD's and just relaxing . We loved the dock and fished daily , we rented a pontoon boat for 2 days from MCGees boat rental for a fantastic price and it was perfect especially since we could dock it right at the house. All my children enjoyed thier rooms and we had plenty of space for the 6 of us , easily could accomodate more if smaller children. I had the best nap of my life in the hammock on the porch with my hubby , relaxation just overcame us and I will be able to use my memories of that nap and that view to get me through my future days that are not so relaxing. I would also like to say that we saw 2 manattee and a many adult and 1 baby alligator while on the St. Johns river , what a great experience ! We also saw a couple of sandhill cranes which were spectacular. David the owner was very helpful and I appreciate the effort he went to to ensure we had a great vacation in his home , as I called him with questions more than once before the vacation .

I have several negatives things to say about this property and its owner: 1. the property was not pictured in its true sense. it showed only the rear of the home leading to the boat ramp. If the picture had shown the front of the home, i would not have rented it. 2. the bbq grill was extremely filthy and there was no wire brush to clean it. it was necessary for me to go to the store and purchase one. 3. the trash cans was far from the home and near the wooded area where nocturnal animals would come out and scavenge for food and overturn the trash. 4. the owner charge me an extra $150.00 for leav ing the home "dirty". That is a disgrace, I have had two vacation rentals and I have never charge anyone more that the rental price, even tho some renters left my home in a disgraceful manner. The owner said that the wooden patio floor was spattered with cooking oil after we left. We deep fried fish on the patio and I am certain there were some oil spattered on the floor, but they will evaporate soon, so that should not have been an issue. 5. if the owner is going to charge for overturn trash because of the nocturnal animals, then he should tell you to leave the trash in the home upon your departure and he would put it out on trash day. 6. He said the bbq grill was dirty. Well, as I've said, it was dirty upon my arrival and there were no cleaning tools. I had to purchase a wire brush. If the owner treats all of his clients like this, then it is a rip-off. He should be honest enough and return the money he took from me. I would not reccomend this property, because the owner will look for negative things in order to charge you an extra fee. al

Owner response: I am sorry to read how much your opinion of our home has change since you wrote how "you loved the home and deck". On your last review you were only disapointed that our "grass was wet". Yes there are raccoons which will get in the trash and make a mess, that is why we supply trash can lids and bungie cords. If not used we will have a mess. We have three properties which we rent as vacation homes and have done so for years. This is the first time we have ever charged for damages. You wrote that your cook poured all the grease on the lawn. We did not supply a cook with this rental, the cook was yours and you are responsible for the damages. I only charged a fraction of what the cost of removing the top layer of oil soaked soil and sod.( $120). At the time of the charge, you were in agreement with the amount. Thank you for staying with us. I am truly sorry you have changed your opinion of our river home Libby and David

This was our second stay this year and we where very pleased both stays. The owner answers his phone when you call and is glad to answer any questions. The weather on both trips had it's moments but what a great place to ride out a storm. The fishing is always good and there are places close by to eat out or get supplies. It's a very quiet place and a great place to relax. We rented a boat both trips and the dock is very easy to get in and out of. The view of the river is the best part to me. We will go back again soon.

Owner response: I am glad you enjoyed your trip again. You are so right about not being a bad place to ride out a storm. I love sitting in what we call the river room and watching a thunderstorm. Come back soon. Libby
We choose this house since it was on St John’s River, close to the beach, and close to St Augustine. The location was perfect. My son had surf camp at Crescent Beach and was only 30 min drive. The house had plenty of room for our 6 adults and 2 children. We had brought down two boats one for the river and one for offshore fishing. The dock and driveway had enough room to park everything. The small details with this house like the fully stocked kitchen made, large dining table made this a perfect house for a large family. My son wanted to add he loved sleeping in the hammock. We are already planning our next trip there.

VACATION WITH THE FAMILY
VACATION WITH THE FAMILY
BEFORE WE LEFT FOR VACATION AT THE CABIN I CALLED THE OWNER SEVERAL TIMES. I KNOW I CALLED TO ASK SEVERAL QUESTIONS LIKE ABOUT THE GRILL, FISHING, KEYS, DIRECTIONS AND EVERYTIME I TALKED TOTHE OWNER, HE WAS VERY UNDERSTANDING. HE WAS VERY EASY TO TALK WITH AND HE GAVE ALL THE ANSWERS TO EVERY QUESTION. THE CABIN WAS VERY LARGE AND VERY ROOMY, WE HAD SEVEN PEOPLE AND THERE WAS PLEANTY OF ROOM. \ VERY BEAUTIFUL CABIN WITH VERY NICE VIEWS. WE WERE UP EARLY EVERY MORNING SITTING ON THE EXTRA LARGE DECKS JUST WATCHING ALL THE FISHERMAN GET UP BEFORE DAYBREAK AND TRY TO CATCH FISH. THE ENTIRE WEEK WAS VERY RELAXING AND EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME. WE ARE NOW LOOKING FORWARD TO A RETURN TRIP IN THE NEAR FUTURE. WE JUST CANT SAY ENOUGHT ABOUT THE LOCATION. YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE IT ON YOUR OWN.

SPRING BREAK AWAY FROM THE WEST VIRGINIA COLD.
SPRING BREAK AWAY FROM THE WEST VIRGINIA COLD.
We had a good time at your river house. Very clean and comfortable stay. Didnt catch alot of bass on the St.Johns, but did take our boat to Rodman Lake and catch several. My fishing Buddy and both our families stayed, 7 total. Never felt crowded at any time. My 17 year old daughter did catch a 20.01 pound cat fish off the dock one evening. I would recommend this house. It is just as the add describes. The only reason Ididnt put my stay as excellent, is not being able to keep my boat in the Boathouse out of the weather. The owner keeps his boat there. Cant blame him for that, If it were mine, I would do the same thing. We did see several gators, 2 manatee, bald eagles and heard turkeys gobble while fishing on the St. Johns. In the yard at the house, turkeys in the day and racoons at night. So be careful where you leave your trash, the racoons will scatter it for you, in a 50 yard circle for you to pick up again.Shopping and beach 30 minutes for the girls and fishing for the guys. My opinion is this would be a great gettaway for anyone, with kids of any age. Thank you.

About the owner: My wife and I have lived in St. Augustine since 1981. We have always enjoyed traveling, and have made many friends along the way. Our two children are now off to school, which leaves us more time to enjoy our favorite activities.
Why the Owner Chose Palatka:
We bought this property because we love the river. It was close to everything but it is very private.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We bought this river home in 1996 when our kids were very young and spent many weekends and a large portion of the summers and holidays here. This house is so perfect for casual entertaining.
