This beautiful and immaculate historical home, with large open living spaces and beautiful exposed beams, has a perfect location It is a 3 min drive to the center of beautiful Great Barrington, only 10 min drive to the Ski Resort Butternut! Great swimming only a few blocks away at Lake Mansfield! It easily accomodates two families with areas for privacy and quiet as well as beautiful spaces for family and friends to build special memories together. The house sleeps 10 very comfortably.
This spectacular home was built by one of the Berkshires' most outstanding post and beam builders, D. Lanoue. The frame, first raised circa 1858 in Duanesburg, NY, was restored and reassembled in 1993. The 42 feet by 30 feet form is hand-hewn of mostly hemlock timber held together with wooden pegs.
In addition, the wide pine plank flooring is from the threshing room of the original barn. Deceptively simple in outward appearance, the interior is beautifully decorated with French Provincial antiques and Primitive accessories. Many modern conveniences include all new appliances, dyed plaster walls, an excellent central air conditioning throughout the house, WIFI, Ipod docking station, a DSL line and cable tv with 200 channels.

While the previous reviews of the red barn where justifiable in the their respective praise of this place, they still fell short of how perfect the house, its character and location were. We were to two sets of adults and four kids holed-up. The house is ideal for all us - plenty of room for the kids to run around (and we were there in between ski season and summer so it must be even nicer); rustic, cozy and warm for the adults. Well equipped. Great location near the slopes, a walk to the lake, Bard College campus and of course the town of Great Barrington. We can't wait to come back.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

My husband, son and I rented the Red Barn for the ski season (12/15/12-3/15/13). It was ideal! Large enough to host friends and family and homey enough when it was just the three of us. The location couldn't be better -- 5 minutes from the town of Great Barrington and 10 minutes (or less!) to Butternut, where we had season passes. The owners are fantastic and so helpful and responsive. The basement had all the space and cubbies for our ski equipment. My son loved running around the property and exploring in the woods. There is a caretaker for the house and they provide housekeeping and whatever else is needed. There are five bedrooms and an office, a great open kitchen, dining area and sitting area. Two small drawbacks were: there weren't enough couches when we had guests and the house lacks a fireplace. Neither deterred from our fantastic time at the house. We loved the house so much, we booked it already for the Ski Season 2013-2014!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children.

My family just returned from a wonderful week at the "red barn." This house is magical! When I saw the photos in the vbro posting, it certainly looked nice. In reality, the house is even nicer. It is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and is surrounded by woods. The grounds are lovely and there was plenty of space for our kids to play and explore. The house itself is spacious and very nicely decorated. The kitchen is beautiful and the bedrooms and bathrooms are all very comfortable. There were 5 of us and we had 2 extra bedrooms! This is a great spot for a family vacation or gathering of friends.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway.

I celebrated my birthday here, and it was all that I'd paid for and more! The kitchen was gorgeous (I like to cook!), the living room very comfortable, and the patio wonderful for sunny afternoons. The house is in a great location, only a 10 minute walk to the lake (2-minute drive) and just up the hill from a quaint downtown area. It was removed enough to feel cabiny, but close enough to be convenient. But, by far, the best part was that the property owner and the property manager were very accommodating and helpful. The owner was very friendly and answered a lot of questions before my stay, and when we came into town (near sunset), the property manager came to meet us to help us find our way to the place. When we had a DVD-player issue, he got us help right away. Other than that little technical glitch, everything was amazing! My friends and I can't stop talking about how nice the vacation was. In other words, we would all do it again in a heartbeat!Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers.
