The unit was exactly as described. Boat slip in front was great. The pontoon was very near. Via boat we had access to all the locations in the back bay area. Many places were within easy driving distance by road as well. The unit was nice, comfortable and had all the amenities we required. The owners were very helpful during the booking process and were able to give info during our stay as well. Very nice folks. I have already recommended the unit to friends and family. Looking forward to staying here again when possible.Recommended for: Pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers.

I spent ALOT of time researching condos in the area for our fall 2012 trip. Ilene answered my (millions) of questions about the Grand Slam with lots of patience, enthusiasm and insight. She genuinely seemed excited for our family to spend time at their condo. She was a wealth of information about the area! We had never visited Alabama before...so we appreciated the time she took to make sure we were informed. The condo itself is located right on the water in Walker Key. We spent lots of time fishing right out front! There is boat access for renters of the condo too. While we didn't have a boat during the trip, I can see how the condo and boat dock would be a HUGE benefit to anyone renting the condo. The boat dock was clearly marked and easily accessible. Makes me wish we rented a boat for the week! The 2 pools were well maintained and clean. The kids enjoyed swimming even on the cooler days. One of the pools is right by the water so I was able to watch the little kids swim while my husband and older son fished right there. The condo was spacious and filled with comfy furniture and amenities. All of the bedrooms were spacious with beautiful views. The master bathroom has a large jetted tub overlooking the water. We slept with the windows open in the master bedroom and could hear the water lapping all night (that was wonderful!) The bedrooms are all upstairs together but didn't feel like they were on top of eachother. You could easily stay with another couple or family and have privacy. The kitchen, dining room and living room were pretty open to eachother. Which meant that everyone got to enjoy eachother while cooking. The deck was a nice space to sit and enjoy the boats, palm trees and water. The unit has WiFi that was quick and easy to access. The kitchen was loaded with things that you don't typically find in a vacation rental...including a crockpot! Which made the cooks job even easier! The beach, Pier, shopping, restaurants and even the dog park are all close by. The location was excellent! The trip was wonderful! Thank you Ilene and Jerry for making it stressfree and relaxing. You really went out of your way to make sure it was everything we envisioned. We hope to visit again someday...it was really sad to leave. The condo really felt like home away from home. And both of you really feel like friends :) Thanks for everything!Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

"The Grand Slam" was accurately portrayed in the listing description. Our family vacation was a great combination of relaxing in beautiful surroundings, fishing in the bay, and enjoying the clean and attractive pools on the property. Jerry and Ilene were friendly and yet professional; they have done an exceptional job making sure "The Grand Slam" has everything needed for a great vacation. Without hesitation I can recommend "The Grand Slam" has a fine choice for a memorable and pleasant vacation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

The best-stocked condo we've ever stayed at

The Grand Slam is the most provision-stocked place I have stayed in! Jerry and Ileen are "friends", and available for anything you might need. We had a group of 6 adults, 5 kids and a dog. There was plenty of room in the bedrooms if you wanted privacy, or enough room for gathering for meals. The bedrooms are very spacious, there were plenty of nice, thick bath linens, and we never ran out of hot water with all of us in line to shower. This condo is in a great location - quiet but within 5 minutes of the islands, gulf, shopping and eating. It is well-lit at night for strolling, and the condo is an end-unit for easy access. The boat slip is a major plus - right out the back door, and there's patio furniture on the carport and balcony, and a place to store extra boating stuff. The pool area overlooks the bay and marina. Food is great at Doc's Seafood just down the road, Cobalt at the foot of the bridge (my favorite), The Shrimp Basket or Wolf Bay Lodge at Zeke's Marina. We cooked our catch in the well-stocked kitchen at the condo for an awesome stay-in meal. Hint: If you fish inland, do it at night! This is a great, pet-friendly place for a group. You just might forget what day you are supposed to leave!!!Owner response: It is always wonderful to hear that our guests had a great time, but it's extra special to have it in wiriting, and expressed so that future guests can get an actual feel for the property. We have really tried to make our place "Your Home Away From Home" and are thrilled to know that we are succeeding in this. Teresa and her family were great guests, and we so enjoyed having them. What is really special, too, is that Teresa is not the only writer in her family. The children left us charming little notes about the good time they had, and this was especially great, knowing that we had some small part in wonderful memories they will have of this special time in their young lives. There is a saying that life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away. We feel so fortunate to be able to share this little "slice of paradise" on this beautiful island, which can provide the opportnity for many such moments -- beautiful sunsets, dolphins in the bay, a stroll on the most beautiful beaches you will find anywhere, catching that "big one" -- whatever your special moments might be -- and best of all, just enjoying family! We always say that Orange Beach is the best-kept secret in Alabama. We invite you to come on down and see all we have to offer. If our guests over this a little over a year we have been renting have the answer -- and we certainly believe they do -- you will be SO GLAD you did. There is really never a bad time to visit. Right now, we are going into the fall season and there is the very popular Shrimp Festival coming up in October. Fall is actually my favorite time on the beach.

We had a great time! Time just flies bye. You have done a GREAT job making the guest feel at home. I have NEVER seen a place so well provisioned. So many places you have to run out for provisions the second you get there or you must remember to pack everything possible. The snacks hit the spot when we first arrived! The book you put together was helpful with knowing where we wanted to eat out. Jerry, thanks for meeting us and filling us in on things. The boat slip was perfect. So many times you get incorrect info about boat slips.Recommended for: Pet owners, sightseeing.
Owner response: Again, we are delighted to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay with us at The Grand Slam on this beautiful island. During our first year of renting, we have strived to truly make this "Your Home Away From Home" and it is always encouraging to hear we are succeeding in this. Also, we are so glad to have a review from a boater who appreciated having their boat right in their "front yard." You can sit on your private balcony and look down on it. And it's great to hear from guests who have enjoyed the beautiful fall season on the beach. So many people fail to realize that this is a wonderful season for a visit. Also, December is a great time to visit. There is a great outlet nearby and many local shops where you can find unique Christmas gifts, and a visit to Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile to see the Christmas lights is a special treat, with many great restaurants along the way to try. You will find there is always something going on throughout the year on this beautiful island. Thanks again. Jerry "Big Shoe" and Ileen Shoemaker, The Grand Slam.

We found the townhouse to be exactly as advertised, 3 nice sized bedrooms, and bathrooms with more than enough space to accommodate 6 adults, 2 children, and 2 small dogs! The view from the deck was beautiful, and when you were at the pool that looked out over the bay it looked as if you could just swim right on in. We did not cook a lot, but when we did the kitchen was very well equipped. There were even coffee filters, creamer, and sweetner. As a welcome gift Ileen and Jerry left us a bowl with popcorn, chips, chocolate, everything you would need for a movie / game night. We were close to everything we wanted to do (the beach, outlet mall, and deep sea fishing), but far enough away that we could relax and enjoy a slower paced vacation. Ileen and Jerry were great and answered any questions that we had. Doc's Seafood was one of the best meals that we had and it was right up the street! If you want to go deep sea fishing we went out with the folks at Zeke's Landing and limited out on the boat. It was a great time, don't forget the sunscreeen. The boys got a crab trap and caught several beautiful blue crabs that we cooked, cleaned and put in a pot of seafood gumbo. It was so relaxing.....can't wait to go back. Can't say enough about our hosts -- they were great. One of the kids left some things and Jerry and Ileen mailed them back to them. Their concern for our comfort was unbelieveable.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, girls getaway.
Owner response: Thanks, Vicki. It's wonderful guests like you and your family who have made our first season of renting our condo so successful. You truly captured the essence of our part of this beautiful island. Also, we really appreciate that your comments reflect that our efforts to assure our guests have a memorable vacation have succeeded. We truly want the condo to be "Your Home Away from Home." Hope to see you next year -- or maybe sooner. So-called "off season" also offers a great time to visit. Check with us for special rates and special activities, such as the very popular Shrimp Festival in October; the beautifully decorated Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile in December; the casinos in Biloxi, with special tips on outstanding places to eat and sights to see along the way; the schedule of the Blue Angels in Pensacola, as well as things to do and see in that area; a great day trip through Destin, Florida, including Seaside and Watercolor; or maybe just a relaxing day of flying kites on a quiet beach. There are unlimited things to do year-round on this island paradise. Thanks again. Jerry "Big Shoe" & Ileen Shoemaker

I wish I was there right now! My family stayed in this town home recently and we all loved it. The home is spacious yet cozy and more importantly it is such a comfortable place. Sitting on the balcony overlooking the bay, you have wonderful views of the bay and the gulf breezes. It is convenient to restaurants, shopping and the beach. I can’t wait to stay again; my next trip is already booked.Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, sightseeing, age 55+, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Owner info
About the owner: Owners first visited this area in the 1960's, when there was little more than a grocery store, a restaurant, and a service station. Our children always loved to visit their grandparents who had moved to Gulf Shores. Now we live on the island on a part-time basis and two of our children have realized their dream of living in the area permanently. We have watched the area grow over the years and are very familiar with the restaurants the locals frequent and other amenities the island has to offer. We can recommend the best captains around for a great day of all types of fishing. We have visited beaches all over the United States, including Hawaii, and have found none more beautiful than the best-kept secret on the Gulf -- the beautiful Alabama beaches!
