Tiring of white wall cookie cutter condos with cheap Chinese art? (Admittedly they have better views during the day - although my dad said "hey you can't see the ocean at night!") Kidding aside if you are looking for that fast disappearing piece of old Florida, (with pool, tennis courts and a very short walk to the beach) then the Shellbox Cottage may be for you.

If you normally prefer to rent from an agency - please read our reviews for piece of mind. Plus you will save money. We help guests avoid the awful 4pm check in day (lost day) & strict check out times when we can. And we try not to go exclusively from Saturday to Saturday if your schedule is out of the ordinary!
We are not only flexible, but helpful owners. We love our cottage and love this special island. We can help you in a jiffy with most needs and help you plan your visit, especially if coming from abroad.
Our calendar is updated (almost daily). Sanibel Island rules only allow some homeowners to rent for 28 day periods (you may leave earlier of course!) so we only rent our cottage about 8 or 9 times per year, so PLEASE INQUIRE! no matter what the calendar says - we often lend it to family or friends and can often move dates around.
The ShellBox is just down the street from the Gulf of Mexico. The cottage is free standing -- so no one above you or below you or attached to you. No crazy steps (hello luggage - groceries). No windows for others to walk (hello smoke and noise). No "motel style" balconies.
We offer the best of both worlds; your own cottage yet part of a small homeowners association with a fantastic crisp clean (heated) pool and decent tennis court all on 4 acres of gracious, quiet, well landscaped grounds with mature tropical plants & trees. A special oasis.
We rented many years at great cottages but always found ourselves sitting out front on some driveway right next to everyone else trying to be outside. We have 3 great places to chill - - a small front porch [open air] - medium sized back porch [screened in w/ new no-see-um screening 2015] - of course the pool area (dining tables & umbrellas & chaise lounges) and where I eat breakfast most morning]
And of course, the white sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico (where you can wash the sand away at our handy rinse shower in front).
Our cottage is the almost perfect place for a warm weather vacation.
On the side of the cottage we have a sweet little shell garden and what we think is the most amazing hot/cold outdoor shower. We rarely take showers indoors when there - but we live in NYC, so maybe we think it' more interesting than it is? LOL
Most sunny days we scoot back and forth to the beach several times on Sanibel's famous 21+ mile bike path, just outside our front door. We grab a flashlight and walk to the Jac or Matzaluna and Sanibel Steakhouse for dinner and sometimes we hit the Dairy Queen for a post lunch 'dip cone' and visit the birds of Periwinkle Park on the way home. Don't forget to catch 'Libby The Bird Lady' there (even if you do not choose us... 10:00 in season M/T/TH/F
It's the perfect place for a couple & perhaps people with a 1-2 children or with friends visiting for a short time in between. It is truly a one bedroom although it will sleep 6.
Owned and furnished by a design+build designer and a trained cook we hope you will find the furnishings fun, festive, interesting and comfortable and the kitchen perfectly equipped for, well, almost any need.
This is a cottage however in the true sense! It was originally built on the beach by an architecture student in the 1950's and moved here in the 1960's. It's worn wood walls, old school awning windows, and a 1950's stove, that sometimes act it's age. We do not have granite or corian counter tops nor stainless steel appliances (nor do we want them). It is beautiful in it's own very special way, as everything is to someone. But it is not for everyone.
(1) king size bed with down mattress topper & custom made silk comforter. Soft.
(1) full sized futon in room that can be closed off for privacy with 2 sets of sliders/vertical blinds. All new linens. Very firm.
(1) daybed with 2 twins or (1) king bed. Steps are very steep so we technically call our house a 1 BR but a responsible nimble person can negotiate the steps - the loft is 15x10 with big huge windows & desk. Great for writers, privacy, kids.
(2) full size futons can be used as beds - little privacy. Firm....moreless
Blow dryer. Curling Iron. Nail polish remover (for people who fly in) Hot Water Bottle. Tissues. First AID kits. Usually people leave "pay it forward items" ; lotions, aloe, etc. around for others to use. Help yourself!...moreless

Our crystal clear and clean pool is just far away and just close enough to the cottage to be perfect. Our homeowners association is very small so the pool is always quiet and perfect.
