This home has 2 floors, and is a very private property in a nautical setting. This was the home of 'Al Capone' in the 1940's. Diana Ross has stayed here on her visits to Miami for 10 years. It is a historical building with a lot of character and much of it is original to this day. This home is ideal for large groups and families. With five large bedrooms and three bathrooms, it can sleep up to ten people. Enjoy a private pool, tennis court, and basketball hoop for some recreational fun.
The place looked great in the pictures and perfect for our group of 10. The pictures are fairly accurate but the place is filthy which you can't tell from pictures. Beds/mattresses are decades old and uncomfortable. The whole place feels like it's falling apart. Could be a great place if a bit of money was put into maintenance as it's nice and secluded, good layout and a great garden.
Douglas the caretaker will look after you. He's nice enough though don't rely on him to do much. He gave us 1 key between 10 of us, offered to give us rides into South Beach which we were going to pay him for at the end by way of a generous tip but instead he presented us with a bill that
worked out at almost 3 times the local cab company rate per journey so that left a bit of a bitter taste. He was pretty insistent that we use him rather than local cabs, maybe we should've asked what he intended to charge us.
Area is a little sketchy especially given lack of keys mean you need to leave the house unlocked most of the time, and there are broken windows in the back of the house.
There are only 3 bathrooms and they're all pretty disgusting. Showers were terrible and the toilets were leaking.
For all that I probably still would've given it a 2-3* review as the property was still what it was meant to be based on the description.
Big problems started when I asked for my security deposit to be returned. For about 2 months the owner kept putting it off saying he'd get to it (the lease said it'd be returned within a week), then he started telling me I should talk to Douglas as he'd given him the money for repairs after our stay. No mention at any time of what repairs and odd that it came out to exactly the amount of the deposit. Douglas obviously had no idea what was going on so made similar excuses and claimed he'd get back to me. I've scheduled a hearing at small claims court to get the money back, that will happen at the end of October so will update the review then.
The whole experience has just left a bitter taste after what was a really enjoyable trip.
Manager response: Hi Adam,
We are very sorry to hear about the situation you had that property, and we are aware that you actually did not rent this property through our company. We rented this property until we saw that it was, as you said, in very bad condition. Because we saw this, we stopped renting and forced the owner to completely renovate the property. About $20,000 went into fixing major structural issues and we have been renting it again for a couple of months. We hope that your future renting experience is much more positive, and we thank you for the honesty, and we want you to know that the problems have been fixed.
