Carrshield cottage description
The Old Meeting House
Perched on the edge of the West Allen Valley in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Old Meeting House offers spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. It offers a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to the peace and quiet of the countryside where only the call of the curlew and the sound of ewes calling to their lambs breaks the silence.
The cottage, built in the 17th century, sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms, with a Queen sized bed in each of the 2 main bedrooms and 2 single beds in the third. It has all modern conveniences including central heating as well as a wood-burning stove in the large kitchen/dining room. The bathroom has a large walk-in tiled shower as well as a clawfoot tub and the living room and library offer plenty of space for curling up with a good book or accessing the internet with our WiFi.
Outside there is a patio running the length of the house for admiring the view or for watching the sunset with a glass of wine, as well as a lawned garden to the east of the property with a large shade tree for hot summer days . To the west of the house is another large grassed area . The valley is criss-crossed with public footpaths, one of which leads you to the river below the cottage where you will find the remains of an old mill, a waterfall with a swimming hole at its base and shallow pools for paddling and rock hunting.
Alston, the highest market town in England, with shops, café’s and restaurants is only 8 miles away and Allendale, with its 3 pubs, each serving excellent food and its 2 teashops , as well as a butcher, pharmacy, Post Office and Co-op supermarket is only 5 miles in the other direction. There are 2 old leadmines which are open to the public within an easy drive of the cottage and Langley Castle with its spectacular afternoon teas is also a short drive.

If I had to sum up this cottage in 1 word, it would have to be spectacular. The setting is a dream. This was to be the place for our Christmas & New Year celebrations and we are not disappointed. From booking, to arriving I cannot express enough gratitude from the owner & neighbor for their contact, ensuring that we not only had everything we needed for our stay, but had a contact for anything we needed whilst we were here, with emails and phone calls - I couldn't have felt more looked after. The cottage itself is delightful, it is spacious and seems to go on forever with room after room downstairs. All 3 bedrooms are large and are decorated wonderfully. The well equipped kitchen has everything we needed and more. I am glad I didn't read the negative review - I would book here again in a heart beat. Get your camera, get your waterproofs on and get over here! We will definitely return.

Unfortunately a Disappointment!
Unfortunately a Disappointment!
The pictures looked great and pretty much accurately reflected the rental's appearance but what they didn't show were the decomposing rabbits we encountered outside the back door, the mildew smell that was unbelievably strong, the dirty refrigerator and filthy kitchen floor, and hair in the bedsheets. Because we didn't know England at all we had no idea just how far this rental was from anything, like maybe a store. On the plus side, the view was spectacular, we enjoyed watching the sheep grazing all around, and it was very peaceful for walking. I can't say I would recommend this to anyone I know but I'm sure that there is someone out there that would love the seclusion and not mind the dirt as much as I did. I would recommend doing something about the mold and cleanliness and this could be a great place to stay.

Manager response: I am sorry you were disappointed. We shared your comments with our cleaning service and they were as mystified as we were as we have never had any complaints about cleanliness before. The kitchen floor is a little worn but is cleaned before every visitor and the bed linen is always changed and clean. I am glad that you found the setting spectacular and wish your stay had been more enjoyable.
A Magical Christmas
A Magical Christmas
We are from the United States and our family celebrated the Christmas holidays at this marvelous cottage. Cozy fires, breakfasts & suppers around the roomy table and short hikes over the moors made it a perfect holiday for our family. It is a photographer's dream. The view from every window is breath taking! The quaint nearby villages were an added bonus. This area is the best kept secret of northern England. We will be returning!

About: We are an English/American family currently residing on the east coast of the US.
We purchased the cottage over 30 years ago with the hope of raising a family there, but got pulled back to the US for work reasons. We restored the cottage and have used it annually for summer and other vacations, bringing our two children - and for the last few years, our first grandchild - to this beautiful valley.
