This peaceful retreat is nestled in the foothills of the Sapphire mountains in Montana's Bitterroot Valley, a 45-minute drive from downtown Missoula and 15 minutes from Florence, the nearest town. From the Missoula airport, you'll drive down the beautiful highway 93 with spectacular views of Rocky Mountain peaks. You'll head east into the hills, winding through forests and meadows to your mountain haven. The cabin is located near a maintained county road and all-wheel drive is recommended, October through May, for the last mile.

Majestic ponderosa pines and a vibrant display of wild flowers surround the cabin. Inside, wide windows to the south and west bring the snow-capped peaks of the Bitterroot Range into view wherever you turn. From sunrise to sunset, you will bask in the immense landscape - inviting you to savor meals on the deck, take a walk among the lupines on nearby trails, or nap with the summer breeze carrying the scent of pines. The abundant natural light and open floor plan create a feeling of calm spaciousness inside the cabin. This unique home features energy-efficient straw bale construction - a solid and durable option with renewable materials.

When you're ready for adventure, culture, dining out or shopping, the surrounding area offers multitudes of opportunities. You can enjoy an active day in the forest, on the river, browsing through shops or taking in some local music or theater; then return in a short amount of time to your serene mountain sanctuary. The cabin shelves are stocked with information about the many options for outdoor fun and city activities.

The nearby Bitterroot River is perfect for fishing, swimming or boating. Local outfitters offer guided fishing, rafting, kayaking and canoeing trips, or you can rent equipment nearby. For land lovers, dozens of hiking and biking trails wind creekside through scenic canyons in the Bitterroot and Missoula valleys. In the winter, the crisp Montana outdoors beckons you to snowshoe, cross-country ski or downhill ski at your choice of areas located within one and a half hours drive; or right outside your door when there's snow.

Missoula is a thriving university town full of shops and restaurants. Local favorites include Saturday morning farmers' markets and weekend music, arts and crafts festivals. Right in the heart of downtown, the riverside Caras Park hosts outdoor live music and food events. A Carousel for Missoula is another popular downtown destination for kids of all ages. Museum lovers will want to check out the Missoula Art Museum and the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula.

When you're spending a quieter day in the hills, the cabin is just a 15-minute drive away from Florence, where you can shop for groceries and other necessities, or savor a slice of pie at the local cafe.

I said every morning "How could anyone ever tire of this beautiful view??!" From the moment we got to the cabin I was amazed!n The drive up into the foothills did require 4 wheel drive but it was worth it! The little road climbed and turned and took you away from the "rush". Finally seeing the cabin, Rosemary was there to greet us and give us a tour and walk through. She is very accommodating and did everything she could to be sure we would be comfy during the stay. The first thing I noticed, once in the cabin, was the breath taking views across the valley to the mountains. Out every window was a stellar view that looked more like a postcard than real! The cabin was very comfortable with plenty of room. The kitchen was great to prepare meals! It was still pretty cool out at night (30s) and the wood burning stove definitely kept the house warm! Everyone slept well and the beds were comfy! The property consists of 20 acres that were very easy to navigate and explore. Montana and the cabin lived up and exceeded all of the expectations we had for our 2013 Spring Break trip! Thank you Rosemary for sharing the gorgeous little gem! Hopefully we can make our way back one day!

Our family spent the week of Christmas at this wonderful cabin and enjoyed every minute! We walked every day, cooked up a storm, played games, read books, sang.....the list is endless of what we did here. Turkeys were in the hills and deer were nearby. The kitchen is well stocked and the owner is so willing to do whatever to make your stay better. The wood stove kept the house warm and toasty but you did need to stoke the fire throughout the night. My husband was the only one who could drive down with four wheel drive to the cabin so winter roads make it a little more difficult to get into the last two miles. It is worth it when you see the Bitterroot Mountains out the front windows - it is an amazing view out every window! I wouldn't hesitate recommending this property - the peace and quiet is wonderful and the opportunities are endless! My family said it was the best Christmas EVER!

We had a lovely week in late October to enjoy all the beauty and quiet that abounds at Rosemary's strawbale home. I had thought I would want to make the 45 minute drive into Missoula during my stay, but once we were settled the thought of leaving was of little interest. I saw my first flock of wild turkey skirting the top of the ravine just north of the cabin, the ravine a beautiful place to simply sit and look and listen for the scurrying of little critters and the everpresent song of a large variety of bird life. The first snows of the season blanketed the pines during our stay, but our ford focus wagon did fine on the roads. The home is both spacious and cozy, the big woodstove downstairs heating both levels well. The kitchen is well equipped and light filled. The clawfoot bathtub is divine. We did venture out one afternoon for a drive south on route 203, noting on the way The Lee Metcalf Wildlife refuge ( we'll save that for our next trip) and ending in the historic town of Stevensville where if your a bit of a collectibles junkie, you'll have a grand time. Finally I'll just add that I'm not sure who had a better time, our shepard mix dog or ourselves, but either way I know we'll all be coming back for more.

We rented this cabin for a small family gathering. We had 6 adults (2 couples) and 0 kids. It worked out great! Clean, quiet and what would have been majestic views (minus the wildfire smoke). The owner gave us perfect directions! I wouldn't recommend taking a luxury car on this road as it gets rather rough! Its close enough to convenience and far enough away you feel like you are out of the "big city". Unexpectedly, we had cell service too! We didn't have pets with us, however, it looks as though there is a fenced, grass area for dogs.

We had a wonderful time relaxing on the deck, watching sunsets and wildlife. This is a great place to unwind, and get away from it all! The cabin is very comfortable, and has a great open feel. Rosemary was very nice and helpful from start to finish. Awesome hiking and good golf too! We would recommend this place to any of our friends/family. Hope you enjoy your time there as much as we did.

This is a great place to relax and get away from the busy world. My husband and I spent a week here and enjoyed the well-fitted and provisioned kitchen and beautiful living area. The views from the cabin are terrific. We even woke one morning to see a small herd of elk standing just feet away from the bedroom window. Though there were just two of us, the cabin would sleep 6 comfortably and more if you have youngsters who wouldn't mind climbing the ladder to the sleeping loft. Having a washer and dryer in the basement was a nice bonus.

Everything was wonderful! You don't need a 4 wheel drive to get there in the summer, but the road gets pretty rough for a small car. We had 7 ladies at the house for a weekend, and everything about it was perfect!

This house was perfect for our vacation with 4 adults and 4 dogs. The upstairs open floor plan and views of the Bitteroots make it just about perfect. There is tons of trails nearby and you can go for a long walk right out the front door. The proximity to Missoula is great if you want to go into a larger town for the city amenities. The cabin is about 7 mi outside of Florence, which has everything you will need. The kitchen could use some additional cooking supplies/amenities but all in all this was a GREAT place to stay and I highly recommend it.

My boyfriend and I got engaged at the Bass Creek Mountain, only miles from this cabin :) We recently spent a week at the "4 Seasons of Beauty" and had an absolutely wonderful time, we could not have picked a better cabin to rent from the VRBO website for our trip to Montana! The property owner is very accomodating and pleasant to work with, the cabin is completely affordable and offers everything you need for your vacation! The views are amazing from every window in the cabin as there is a window everywhere you turn. We slept in the lower bedroom with a queen bed and woke to mountains outside our window every morning! This cabin is nestled in a private location, but not too far from town where we traveled to get necessities and it's also close to the mountain range for hiking and outdoor activities. We were also able to bring along our dogs, which is huge since we take them everywhere we go, they absolutely loved it as much as we did! We will most definitely stay in this cabin again.....shortly after we left, we already checked our books for an opportunity to come back next year! One last thing.....be sure to check out the veiw from the hill above the cabin, it's breathtakingly beautiful!!

we spent one-week this winter in this open inviting house. we loved the wood burning fire that kept the entire house warm. the open floor plan and spaciousness of the main floor made it easy to spend family time and quiet time in the same space. the kitchen was great and it had all necessary amenities. the house had gorgeous light both morning and evening with expansive views of the bitterroot mountain range. it was an 8-hour drive from seattle and well worth it, though you will need your 4-wheel/all-wheel drive for the last mile into the house. we had a great time hiking and sledding on the expansive property. we hope to go back sooner than later!

About the owner: I fell in love with Montana the first time I saw it back in 1978 when my mother, brother and I were visiting a sister who was working in West Yellowstone. The beauty of the land spoke deeply to me so I decided to make Montana my home. That decision, combined with buying the land in 1990 and building a straw bale house there in 1994 have been some of the best decisions of my life.

                          Why the Owner Chose Missoula:
I purchased the property to build a meditation retreat center, which was the site's initial use for several summers. I chose the location because of the awesome views and the peaceful and healing energy of the land. I built the house with the help of friends and family. It's a very special place to me and to friends who have stayed there over the years and I'm happy to make it available for others to discover its healing magic and peaceful beauty.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
As a lover of the outdoors and wildlife, I appreciate being surrounded by natural beauty at the cabin. Often, I see deer quietly chewing grass, hawks soaring overhead and the most amazing sunsets. The elk herd sometimes passes through the property from the nearby Welcome Creek Wilderness area. I enjoy hiking right from the doorstep, through the forest and meadows. On hot days, I head down to the Bitterroot River to swim or watch birds at the nearby Lee Metcalf bird refuge. The quiet solitude of the place has inspired friends who are artists, musicians and writers to spend time there, creating. The cabin's remoteness as well as it's close proximity to services in Missoula's city center make it an ideal getaway for any length of time.
