Wimbledon is world-famous for being home to the All England Tennis Club and host of the Wimbledon Championships in June and July every year. The tournament is the oldest tennis competition in the world and a British tradition, with a strict white dress code for players and spectators often indulging in strawberries and cream under their sun hats – a thoroughly British affair.
The area dates back to the Iron Age and near the Common, Wimbledon Village is very pretty, with many boutique shops and restaurants. The town area which is ‘modern’, having been mainly built post 1838, has more brand shops and a cinema. The farmer’s market near the Common every Saturday has fresh food on offer, and attracts many visitors to this lovely area.
Wealthy families often choose Wimbledon, as there are many large Victorian houses with gardens, and a country feel whilst the centre of London is just a short train or tube journey away.
