Centro Historico house description
Casa Jacaranda – A Colonial-Era Jewel
On a little cobblestone street, behind heavy antique wooden doors, lies the most authentic of the original colonial Mexican houses of San Miguel. This charming family home has captured and preserved its true Mexican essence, from the vine- covered courtyard, with its colonial center fountain, to the massive wooden beams holding up a beautifully hand crafted wood porch covering a lovely, light filled outdoor living room decorated with brightly colored pillows adorning antique wooden furniture all enhanced by a century old orange tree, jacaranda tree, and beautiful, blooming bouganvillea. Built in the 18th century, Casa Jacaranda has been restored to its original colonial heritage. You will find yourself immersed in the ambience of colonial times but with all the comforts of home.
ARCHITECTURE - In classic Spanish-Moorish style, Casa Jacarnada is surrounded by high stone walls sheltering a world of private beauty. All rooms open into the courtyard, with 2-feet thick walls keeping the rooms cool during warm seasons and cozy during the occasional chilly nights. Enter each room through an old stone doorway with old mesquite French doors leading from one room into the other. There is a flow of indoor-outdoor living. A covered patio fills one length of the courtyard with its intricately-patterned roof over which bursts a scarlet bougainvillea.
The center fountain (dated 1706) fills the house with the sound of splashing water while morning doves dip their beaks in and hummingbirds flit from flower to flower. In the background are the sounds of San Miguel: church bells tolling, the whistle of the knife-sharpener, the call of the flower vendors, as if time stands still. Open the front door to see the little burros being led down the streets carrying firewood door to door for sale. Sometimes you even have a little band playing out of tune in front of the house waiting for you to come out and reward them before they move on to the next house. Due to the traditional colonial design the house is always light, cool, and lovely.
LOCATION- Casa Jacaranda is ideally located in the historic center of San Miguel, steps from everything there is to see and do in town. Go to your right and stroll into Parque Juarez, the most beautiful park in San Miguel; turn left and discover cafes, markets, antiques, produce vendors, and even the new grand Rosewood Hotel with it’s fabulous roof bar and extraordinary vistas. From the roof garden is the view of the spire of the Parroquia, the gothic-style church in the town square, called the Jardin. The Parroquia is San Miguel’s most famous landmark. The central square is a wonderful place to sit on an old bench and watch the comings and goings of the townspeople while reading the local paper, eating a homemade ice-cream cone sold from a horse drawn carriage and meeting people. Everyone loves to talk and will be delighted to give you guidance and share the secrets of San Miguel.
LIVING ROOM, DINING ROOM, KITCHEN, PANTRY – As you enter Casa Jacaranda, two rooms face each other across the entranceway, one leading into the brightly colored 1930’s style Mexican- deco living room. The massive stone fireplace is the prominent feature of this vivid room which leads you into the dining room with its large stone hearth and mirror reflecting the warmth of the room with decorative candles. A low blue table and open archway separate the dining room from the spacious kitchen. A huge campana (hood) reaches to the ceiling over the professional chef stove set into the green cemento pulido (smooth, hand tinted finished cement). A niche filled with vintage ceramics covers the entire wall over the deep double sink. In Mexico a pantry is a room of its own, with an additional sink, and all the modern appliances as well as cupboards filled with glassware, utensils, and hand-blown glass canisters filled with the staples of Mexican cooking.
BEDROOMS - Casa Jacaranda has 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom is opposite the living room, with floors of dusty- rose and old wooden shutters opening to the street. A hand-wrought decorative iron bed sits in the center of the room with 2 large armoires on either side. An attached bathroom of chocolate-brown polished cement trimmed in hand-made tile with a hand-shaped tub and shower features a sink made from an old baptismal font.
The second bedroom is in the back patio with the jacaranda tree providing shade on a sunny day and purple blossoms in the spring. This intimate room has a decorative double-size iron bed, built-in window seats and a walk-in closet.
Cross under the portal into the Moroccan-style bathroom with an arch separating the green cemento pulido tub and shower.
From the back patio walk up the stone steps around the jacaranda tree to reach the little cottage perched on the roof with a queen-size bed. The attached large bathroom has a large round burnt-umber tinted tub and shower and the sink is made of an old grinding stone. This little cottage-like room has its own covered patio with cushioned chairs and a wood-burning fireplace. Farther out on the rooftop is a flower-filled garden with lounge chairs and views of the Parroquia and the Monjas, the 2 most famous churches in San Miguel.
OUTDOOR LIVING/DINING AREAS - As mentioned earlier the courtyard has its own covered patio with dining area and living room sala. Since the weather is beautiful year round you will spend most of your time here, dining and lounging at your leisure.

- When our house is rented we stay at our ranch which is 20 minutes outside of San Miguel. Rancho de la Capilla is an historic site with a painted chapel and other religious structures. It is also where we enjoy horseback riding and taking people for guided tours. We hope you will join us for a ride or come and visit and enjoy a drink and guacamole on the terrace overlooking the Picacho Mountain range. We are always available for any help or guidance you may need, just a few minutes away. If you would like to see the ranch you can find it at our web page....moreless

Kathy and Steve's home is unbelievably beautiful. One room more interesting than the next. Views of San Miguel from the roof top patio are fabulous. Not to go unmentioned is the never ending supply of hot water and the water purification system. Each room has a gas fireplace should you need it. The four of us (seniors) enjoyed our two week stay right in the center of things. Restaurants, parks, food shopping just around the corner. Definitely as advertised!

When you combine a designer and a builder you get something special. And this rental is that something special. Rental #359698 is as good as the photographs. It is lovely. The property has ambiance and convenience of location. We walked almost everywhere and from time to time took the always available roving $3.50 cabs to the Center. Cathy and Steve, the owners, have thought of everything and are always available to answer questions. Flying into BJX (Leon/Guanajuanto) required only an hour 30 minute van ride to San Miguel and the owners arranged for that. We would consider ourselves fortunate if we were able to rent this property again.

A Treasure in San Miguel de Allende
A Treasure in San Miguel de Allende
This house is truly a treasure. We are 3 middle aged ladies who spent a lovely 2 weeks and felt like that wasn't enough time. The location was perfect for history, restaurants, and walking destinations. Was also perfect for getting taxis since it was within a block of a main street. Looking at the photos gave us a pretty good indication of exactly what we were getting into. The owners have done a remarkable job of building this dwelling using as much or the original as was possible and using materials in keeping with age and location of house. It made us feel like we were really a part of Mexico. The furnishings were lovely with all the conveniences of home such as TV, WiFi, CDs, DVDs, etc. The beds are some of the most comfortable going. Made it easy to sleep in and go to bed early! The kitchen and pantry were easy to function in and laundry facilities were easily accessible. The 3 gas fireplaces were used almost every evening and made it cozy for playing games. Luzita kept the place spic and span and cooked us one of the best meals we had while there. Manuel took care of the lush vegetation throughout the house. I've never had so many trees in my house but they were delightful with wonderful flowers blooming. The fountain in the main entry area was very nice. The owners were always available to answer questions about anything. Were great for recommending restaurants and giving information about the surrounding area. They checked in regularly but weren't overbearing by any means. There was a grocery store within the block, a park a short walk away with kids rides, beautiful gardens and walkways. Restaurants in all price ranges are within a short distance of the house and we loved them all. We ended up having a great tour guide for the various things we knew we wanted to see. The Botanical Gardens, Fabrica art shops and workshops in an old fabric manufacturing building, the Pyramid is a must see and having a very knowledgeable guide enhanced the experience greatly. The owners live on a ranch about 20 minutes from the house and we were invited to see it. Were warmly greeted and enjoyed their hospitality thoroughly. We would definitely recommend this house to anyone we know traveling to that area and we will be going back sometime in the future.

I have a small file of houses from VRBO that I dream of renting one day. Whenever I feel the need for an escape I have a look and fantasize about booking one of them. This house was always my favorite - even the photos and text could make me smile and feel better. Imagine my delight when we were fortunate enough to stay at Casa Jacaranda for a week at the end of August this year. The house is not just nice and pleasant -- it is AMAZING -- we loved everything about it. Kathy and Steve have the most impeccable taste and every single thing from the linens to the candles to the dishes to the humor evinced in some of the décor delighted us. They love their house and it shows. It is extremely comfortable, very reasonably priced, in a perfect location and a wonderful refuge for anyone needing either a short or extended sabbatical from the stresses of everyday life. If you can find some time that the house is available book it - I promise you won't be disappointed.

My husband and I rented Casa Jacaranda for 6 weeks, and we thought it was ideal. We've been renting in San Miguel for years, and this house will be the first one that we've repeated--we've rented it next year for 2 months. This lovely home is a careful colonial restoration/recreation at a 300-year-old site. The owners have an artistic esthetic which shows it's best in this house. The furniture, decor, and linens are lovely additions to an already great house. We loved the kitchen, especially when we all cooked--my husband, Luzita the housekeeper, and I. The bathrooms are interesting with non-stop hot water and great towels. But the location is certainly the best we've had in San Miguel. It doesn't get better than this. Shops, restaurants, and bakeries right out side the door. It's an easy walk to the jardin, nearly flat, and in a nice neighborhood every step of the way. We heartily recommend a fairly new restaurant called Lavanda (lavender) on Hernandez Macias. You'll be served the most beautiful, good food ever. Take your camera. Casa Jacaranda's owners, Kathy and Steve, are so attentive, answering every question with grace and good humor. They'll be your new best friends. This house is exactly as it appears in the photos, and so much more. You will love Casa Jacaranda and San Miguel.

Wonderful house to enjoy a real San Miguel experience
Wonderful house to enjoy a real San Miguel experience
We stayed at this beautiful house for 2 months and previously stayed at other houses in San Miguel What makes ths house so special is the authentic architecture and furnishings Many of the other luxury rentals in San Miguel could be in a suburb of a US city The central courtyard to which all the rooms open up to allows you to enjoy the gorgeous weather all the time The house and especially the kitchen are very well equipped. Cooking in the large kitchen with the professional range was a joy The beds are very comfortable and the layout with the bedrooms very separate make the house easy to share and afford great privacy. There is abundant hot water and Luzita the maid is very sweet, helpful and just nice to be around But the best thing about the house, however, are the owners Kathy and Steve They live on a ranch just outside of town and are always accessible for help They are also charming and great fun. We have already booked an even longer stay next year.

This property has very helpful and friendly owners who will take care of anything you need. It is close to Zacateros (street) which leads right up the hill to the main center, or you have two other options to get to the center. Very close, and if there is a big parade of some kind, it will usually go up Zacateros and all you have to do is walk about one block to watch. The house is a restored Colonial. Bathrooms are concrete which is just fun. If the weather is good, you will live outside in the center courtyard playing the many CD;s and watching the flowers grow on the wall on the second level. Definitely recommend it.

I spent a lot of time looking for properties before I went to San Miguel. It is so worth it! The moment I step into the house, I feel I am back in time, couple hundred years. The house is full of beautiful antiques that is impossible to find these days. the owners have such exquisite taste and eye for beauty, every detail was tend to perfect. Aside from being beautiful, it has world class amenities, hot water on demand, water is purified to the point that one can drink from the tap. The showers are heavenly with really good water pressure! It has 3 beautiful bedrooms, one particular is a separate casita on the rooftop, only a few steps from the central courtyard, it overlooks the beautiful skyline and paroquia church on the main jardin. And, let me not forget the location, it is an easy walk to everywhere, no steep hills! Of the month long stay there, I never had to need to call for a cab. This gives me freedom to walk around town without wearing me out. There is just no words to describe this house, perfect! The owners are a real nice American couple, they are the know all in town! It is so wonderful of them to make sure I have everything I need, including a housekeeper who makes sure I have my fresh laundry, and will cook a meal upon request. This house is more than one can hope for, a dream.

We are a family of four with two teenagers. This lovely and historic home truly lived up to the accurate photos and description provided by VRBO. We loved returning each day to this restful, elegant house. It is located nearby the Parque Juarez with easy access up the cobblestone streets to other parts of the historic district. There are more fabulous restaurants and galleries than we could sample in a week but thought the nearby Hotel Matilda and Rosewood hotels provide a modern hotel/restaurant alternative to the more traditional establishments. We loved Cumpanio for its delicious bakery and pastries. We would definitely recommend this house and a stay in San Miguel to a friend!

About the owner: My husband Steve, daughter Lila, and I moved to Mexico in August of 2000. I had grown up in Mexico City and left for college and spent most of my adulthood in NY, working in advertising(as my husband did as well). My parents never left Mexico so we visited often and thought maybe some day we would live here as well. When my parents retired to San Miguel we were captivated. Finally, we decided to make the break. One day we walked around the corner and found our dream house......or soon to be. We moved in and so began the laborious but thrilling project of restoration. Our house is much the way it might have been in the early days of San MIguel. We searched for authentic materials, old ruins and obsessively restored our house as historically as possible. Now with our daughter living in the U.S. we are spending more time at our ranch outside of town and our house is therefore available for rentals, short-term and long-term. We love to come and go and have all the advantages of living in the historic center of town. But we also love to jump in the car and drive 20 minutes into the countryside and another world. We are always available to our guests. We have a full-time maid and handyman as well. All your needs will be taken care of and we look forward to meeting you and taking you out to the ranch for a ride or a visit.
Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico:
Casa Jacaranda is our full-time home. San MIguel has been a wonderful place for us to raise our daughter and build our ranch business. We have had so many adventures here. At the ranch we have had cooking classes, weddings, tours, and riding events. This is a wonderful place for a long or short visit.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is located in the middle of the historic center of town, everything within walking distance. There are also many little trips within a short distance from San Miguel. We can make arrangements for you to visit special places and take care of all your needs.
