  Our group of 8 - four adults and four teenagers - thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful apartment. We had a leisurely breakfast every morning around the big dining room table and had plenty of room to sit around and talk about our day when we returned from exploring New York. Subway and bus stops are within a short walking distance, and there's a terrific grocery store around the corner. There was a heat wave while we were there, and Maya supplied extra air conditioners to keep us comfortable. Highly recommended.

  Our experience was a very good one. There were 8 persons staying in the apartment. We came for my daughter's graduation from New York University. First, I would like to thank Maya for being the perfect hostess. She was so accomodating and pleasant from the beginning to the day we left. The apartment was very clean and homey. Everyone commented on the spaciousness, warmth and homelike feeling. The only problem were the stairs. Three flights are a bit much when you are a senior citizen. However, I must admit it became easier each day. I would gladly recommend this apartment for persons visiting New York.

  We are a group of 7 friends who try to get together for a short vacation somewhere new every year. This property was perfect for us - it was very clean with plenty of comfortable beds, 2 bathrooms, and a wonderful bright, open kitchen/living area in which to congregate or hang out. Maya was so gracious. She arranged for an SUV (big enough for all 7) to transport us to/from the airport for a great rate. She even provided an electric fan for white noise since I have sleep issues. Maya suggested many great restaurants, too. A grocery store, liquor store, and subway stops are nearby. We loved staying there & wouldn't hesitate to return!

  I could not agree more with the previous review: This is a place you would LOVE to live in! We are a Norwegian family of five who stayed for 10 nights in this fantastic and very spacious apartment in July 2011, and loved it to bits. We booked it more than six months in advance, and before arriving we had great communication with Maya (the owner) about all practical matters. She organised a pick-up at the airport for us, which was very practical. Upon arrival, we also had a warm and friendly welcome, and received lots of practical information about the apartment and the neighbourhood. The apartment is in a typical NY brownstone. It was very clean and comfortable, and equipped with everything we needed –and more. The interior is open-plan, urban and rustic, and feels very light and airy. I particularly appreciated all the artwork by Maya’s father on the walls. The location is also great with subway, local shops and plenty of restaurants within short walking distance. Try Sylvia’s on 328 Lenox Avenue or The Red Rooster just off 125th & Lenox Avenue. We had a lovely and enjoyable time in Harlem and NY, and will definitely be back one day.

  wow. as soon as I called maya she was so helpful and warm with our group with EXTREMELY short notice. we loved the neighborhood, Everyone in the area from every social class was so friendly and maya gave us a list of all sorts of wonderful juicebars and grocery stores in the area. but the HOUSE was the best part!!! oh my goodness I want to LIVE in that bathtub. ( I took 3 baths in our two days) Since there was such an abundance of wonderfully colored bath towels we never had to do a load of towels even though there were 9 of us. it was very nice to not run out. Two weeks later we are all STILL talking about how amazing our time in harlem was in that house, we are just straight bragging all the time it seems! The kitchen was awesome for our dinner parties and the grand dining table was the icing on the cake! We loved how green they were with organized recycling and trash containers. I noticed someone reviewed that they got lectured on energy consumption by mayas father and I'm positive they are blowing it out of proportion. If anything I bet they ran into each other and her father probably made a simple request for them to be aware of their energy consumption because we all should be aware of that! everywhere we go! The beds were amazing and the terrace off of the third floor loft was beautiful to watch the sunrise from. We want to live in this house and hang out with maya everyday! and in regards to that one reviewer saying that maya was inhospitable with an attitude, I would be willing to bet they're just jealous because they're not as easy on the eyes as maya is! we did not get one HINT of her being either inhospitable or rude. any time you come to oregon, maya, you have a place to stay. I wish we came to manhattan all the time and could always rent this house out. maybe we'll have to make it an annual thing from here on out. not one of us had any complaints. not ONE! (and some of us are kind of high brow snobs with our comforts!) thanks again maya! you were so helpful!! cheers!

  I did not experience the welcoming hospitality that other reviews have written about. Prior to my trip I emailed Maya and asked her suggestion on what I should do with my luggage on the day of my checkout as my flight was scheduled to leave late in the evening. She offered that I could leave my luggage at the town home until my flight left as the next group of visitors was not due to arrive until three days after my group left. On the day of our checkout she began arguing with me and a friend about how these types of arrangements need to be made ahead of time. Well Maya, in the world I come from, I had made arrangements ahead of time. I did not appreciate the stress of your bad attitude and unprofessionalism one bit. There are mice in the kitchen, the towels smell like mold, and laundry soap is not provided. In addition, don't turn the air conditioning on during the day or you will be rudely awoken from your sleep by Maya's father entering the rental and lecturing you about energy consumption.

  Owner response: We regret that you had such a bad experience in our beautiful home. However, we assure you that the home is clean, pest free and new towels are always being purchased. We do our best to practice Green living and hope to make as small of a carbon footprint as possible. We provide a small modern washer/dryer, but laundry detergent is Not part of the amenities offered, as many people have their own preferences. Most travelers purchase detergent along with groceries for the duration of their stay. Regards,

  Pros: 1) Maya the owner was very accomodating, and nice and easy to work with. She helped us out tremendously with our family gathering. Thanks. 2) Location excellent. Close to subways, and 125th St. 3) Loads of restaurants in the area, and within walking distance. 4) The living, kitchen and dinning area is large and spacious. Very comfortable for large groups. Lots of compliments were payed to that area. Cons: 1) .3 steep flights of stairs. Not good for elderly and mother's with babies. This should be noted in the listing. My husband is over 70 and found it very difficult to navigate stairs, and so did I. 2) WiFi only seems to work with Apple products. Even though my granddaughter(17) had an apple ipod and she still could not access the web. 3) Bathrooms are like being outside, not updated to my standard. Had difficulty operating shower and very low water pressure. 4) Needs better lighting in bedrooms and bathrooms, for reading at night and to put on make-up. 5) Needed more towels for a family of 6. Another suggestion waste baskets in each bedroom, also mirrors. Overall: The space in the home was very big, with plenty of room for our 6 to be comfortable and have some privacy. We are native New Yorkers so we were very excited to be back, and this location was great for traveling around the city.

  We stayed here last Christmas. I have been wanting to write this review and have finally sat down to do it. Our experience was too good to leave unrecorded. Great home! Maya was very accomodating and a thoughtful hostess. We arrived a little early and, even though she had her family over celebrating Christmas, she invited us into her home and served us fresh squeezed orange juice! (We were seven people with snowy wet boots stomping into her home!) Maya's entire family were warm, loving, and inclusive. We are white midwesterners and my mother-in-law was concerned staying in Harlem. From my observation, the neighborhood is predominately African American and Hispanic. Lots of middle class working folk doing their thing. People out and about day and night and overall friendly. We walked home after dark from the train station every night without any problems. Even Mom was comfortable! The home is clean and interesting. Maya has some unique photographs her Dad took. We enjoyed sharing a touch of her life and Harlem's history and culture. Although it is a little hike to the train, we used public transportation the entire time. it is easy to get to all the desireable destinations in NYC. There are restaurants and a grocery store within a couple blocks. This home bubbles over with character. The high ceilings and brick walls are unique. The bathroom is done in a modern concrete...very cool. I highly recommend staying in Maya's home.
