The owners of this property also own Claimjumper 8, which is also in Red River, and is VRBO listing #102028, as well as the Loft at Southgate next to the A&M campus in College Station, Texas, which is VRBO listing #100975. This property was just purchased in October of 2010, as a quiet hideaway in the mountains, which is still in the town. It offers some of the best views overlooking the town in all of Red River. The mountain views include the Red River Ski Area, with mountains and foliage all around. At 8,750 feet above sea level, the Town of Red River offers a great place to cool off in the summer when the rest of the country, including Texas, is very hot.

The property has two balconies for enjoying the view. As the sun rises and sets, the shadows on the mountainsides and in the trees surrounding Casa Nueva #6, change constantly from minute to minute, offering wonderful photographic and viewing opportunities.

The Town of Red River is located in the middle of the Carson National Forest with hiking trails leading, among other places, up to Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico. The Red River Ski Area offers snow skiing and snowboarding beginning on the Thanksgiving holidays and continuing through spring break. Even when the natural snow is not as plentiful, the Red River Ski Area has the best snow making in the State of New Mexico. Red River is just a fun town and is great for families. There is wonderful shopping and galleries, nice restaurants, and even places to two-step.

It is always nice to hike around the Middle Fork area, and on the Goose Creek Trail. Middle Fork is a beautiful lake, and it is possible to hike up to Wheeler Peak from there, if you know where you are going. At the end of the Red River Valley, there is a nice hike from the Ditch Cabin site up to Sawmill Park which is a beautiful meadow. Mallette Park, which is located in the center of the Town, is a good place to have a picnic and take the kids to play on the playground equipment, or to play tennis or a game of disc golf or hoops. The lift is open during the summer as well as during ski season. There is a disc golf course on top of the ski mountain. Questa is a short 12 mile drive to the east, and from there it is a short drive up to Cabresto Lake. There is a beautiful trail up behind that Lake, which goes up to Heart Lake (a gradual climb of a few miles), where you can look over onto the Latir Lakes. You can also drive up to the Midnight meadows and mines on the road which runs from Questa to Cabresto. Just keep going to get to Midnight. Then, you can come back through the road which comes back to Red River through Mallette Park.

The Visitors Center in Town Hall has some excellent material about the hiking trails and other enjoyable diversions in and around Red River.

The Red River Community House organizes guided hikes along with other activities. Some of these include very enjoyable tales about the history of Red River, and can be especially helpful for those who are not familiar with the mountain trails.

The Valle Vidal runs from Costilla to Cimarron and is absolutely spectacular country.

The Wild Rivers Gorge is just north of Questa, take a left. It has some great views of and hikes into the Rio Grande Gorge. This is overlooked by most visitors, and it should not be missed.

At the east end of town, there is a Red River history museum in the Little Red School House. The library next door also has an excellent display of the history of Red River with some old photographs. The library offers a very nice selection of both DVD and VHS movies which may be borrowed, as well as books for those who are looking for something to read. Be sure to check when the Library is open.

The place is wonderful. It is well stocked with everything you need. It was clean and nicely decorated. When we had trouble getting up the driveway after the new snow, the property managers were quick to send over a truck to plow and lay gravel. All was great!

Owner response: Thanks for taking the time to write a review. That is part of the fee that we pay, as property owners, to ensure that there is access and that the road is plowed, in the event of a heavy snow. I am happy to receive feedback that this does in fact work out.

My family stayed at Casa Nueva #6 over the 4th of July holiday and had such a great time! This condo was perfect for our family. The kids, ages 3 and 6, loved the bunk beds! All the beds were so comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, and we loved sitting on the porches. This condo overlooks the town from the parking lot and has great mountain views, not to mention it is very nicely decorated and has a great, roomy upstairs bathroom. Josh, the owner, provided us with a great list of dining and entertainment suggestions prior to our visit, which was very helpful. We recommend taking the 2 hour drive for the Cumbres-Toltec train ride in Chama, NM. The views on the drive to Chama are beautiful and the train was so fun with the staged train robbery and fireworks. Red River is such a great town. We loved the 4th of July parade and just spending time walking around the town - lots of family entertainment! We didn't want to leave! This was such a great family vacation for us and we will be back again!

My husband and I stayed here last September and look forward to returning again. Quiet, beautiful view, clean, comfortable and very well furnished. Couldn't ask for a better place to enjoy Red River !!

Beautiful Property. Pictures were so helpful when making our decision. Will definately check availability next time we plan a trip to Red River. Visited in morning by the deer, let me take several pictures. Temperatures warm during the day, but cool in the mornings and evenings. Food in town was outstanding. After temps in the 100's in the Plains, this could not have been any better. Red River will ALWAYS have my heart!!

                              Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: In addition to their two places in Red River, Vicky and Josh Harrison maintain their home in an old home built in 1936, which is located just south of the Texas A&M campus, within easy walking distance from the Quad and Kyle Field. They operate a bed and breakfast there called the Loft at Southgate. Vicky is a wildlife, portrait, and landscape artist working in various media. Josh is an attorney practicing commercial law with his office in The Woodlands, Texas. The above photograph was taken in April of 2007, when the Harrisons were on a trip visiting Austria.

Why the Owner Chose Red River:
Vicky and her family have traveled to Red River since the 50's. Josh came to Red River with Vicky in the 60's and absolutely loved the mountains. This happens to lots of us native Texans who fall for the mountain scenery. The Harrisons married in 1973 and have been coming to Red River with their sons who have become great skiers and acquired a deep love of the mountains.

The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
Casa #6 is a quiet refuge in the mountains. It could be a wonderful place for a writer to spend several months. Yet, it is still in the town of Red River which offers all of the conveniences needed. So, the Harrisons and their guests can pick the type of property they like best, depending on availability. Being across the street from the ski lift in the center of town, Claimjumper 8 books pretty solid during the busy seasons, but Casa #6 offers a different experience, more secluded and with less distractions.
