This is a cottage with a history; the fireplace was built as a trade for medical services in the early 1900's, windows and diningroom table came from the original hospital in St. Croix Falls, beams were salvaged from Never's Dam that once stopped the St. Croix River. Everything in this cottage has a story.
It sits on 6 acres of wooded land with 200 feet of lake front on Deer Lake. It is low tech with its roots in the past - a place to give you a 'real cabin' experience.
It is a walkout rancher with a loft. On the main floor there is a great room, kitchen, bedroom, 1/2 bath and a large deck with a view of the swimming beach & bay. The walk out basement has three bedrooms with a double bed in each, one bath and a family room. The loft has mattresses on the floor for the kids and it overlooks the great room.
Keywords: Lakefront Cottage, sandy bottom, wooded setting, secluded bay, muskie fishing, hiking trails, walkout rancher, historic charm, large deck with a view, 1 hour from the Twin Cities.

Our family stayed at Riegel Bay Cottage this past summer. It was a very nice cottage. Like the previous reviewer stated; it is a true cottage experience. Our family enjoyed fishing off of the pier; every evening our 14 year old son caught at least 6-8 good sized bass. Paddle boating was fun for the kids. The entire family enjoyed a couple of canoe trips up and down the shore. The house itself wasn't lacking anything. There was no tv, telephone. But that was fine with us, wireless internet was available if someone really wants to be connected to the rest of the world. St. Croix Falls was just a hop, skip, and a jump for any necessary groceries or forgotten items. Not a ton of restaurants in the area, but we did enjoy Loggers a couple of times and found a pretty good pizza place. The only disappointment to our family was the swimming. Yes, the house is right on the lake, yes the lake water is very clean, and yes there was a swimming raft, but there were just too many weeds for our preference. Didn't care for the way they would wrap around our legs and ankles when swimming. We got around that though by heading to the nearby 'Interstate Park' a couple of different days for swimming and hiking. The park had a wonderful sandy beach and very clean, weed free lake for swimming. You did need to buy a state park sticker though. Overall, we would recommend staying at Riegel Bay Cottage, our family was sad to leave when the week was up.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, age 55+, sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children.

You can tell this place has had a lot of memories made over the years. This is truly a real cabin experience - no tv, no air conditioning, collections of things gathered over the years that you would expect to see in a cabin, not the fake junk pulled out of the 'Northwoods' store. The lake is great (raft included), great porch, and a great fireplace if it's ever needed. This place is for people with a little depth of character. Don't expect a 5 star resort. Expect a cabin. And please follow the rules so Nan is able to continue opening up this gem off the beaten path to others.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Owner info
About the owner: This Cottage has been in our family for 6 generations. It was originally purchased by our great, great, (and for some of us, another great) Grandfather. Steeped in local history and countless family traditions, it has been handed down through our generations and continues to draw family locally, nationally and even internationally to nurture our family connections in this magical place of our history.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Local amenities are abundant and varied:
St. Croix Falls & Taylors Falls offer a number of ways to experience the St. Croix River. Take the big paddle boat trip down river, hike the many trails or picnic in the Interstate Park. Plan a day or over night canoe/kayak trip on the river or check out more of the scenic rivers in the area.
Art Galleries in Frederic, Amery, Stillwater, Franconia Sculpture Park, Baker Apple Orchard Gallery, to mention a few .
Fawndoerosa Petting Zoo and the Pea Pickin Flea Market on Hwy 8. The waterslide in Taylors Falls, tubing on the Apple River.
While most local towns have an Antique Shop, notable stops are in, Lindstrom, Shafer, Stillwater and Osceola. If you just want to look, and get a huge dose of antiques & history, the best place ever is the Polk County Historical Museum in Balsam Lake.
There are several trails in watershed areas around Deer lake. One of them is Rock Creek which is within walking distance. It provides a memorable walk by a scenic stream, through woods and prairie.
The Ice AgeTrail is one of many trails within a short drive. The Gandy Dancer & Stower Seven Lakes Trails are a couple of non-motorized biking/walking trails converted from old railroad beds in the area.
The Historic D.D. Kennedy Mill Site, Dam & trail is located within a 10 minute drive.
A variety of dining opportunities are available in nearby St. Croix Falls & Taylors Falls.
