We stayed in Big Sur many years ago as a couple and fell in love with the area. Big Sur itself is absolutely beautiful, with charming cafes, galleries, and luxury restaurants. Last August we returned to Big Sur with our family and rented this amazingly well appointed home seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but actually minutes from a quiet and spectacular beach, and a village which contained everything we needed. The house we stayed was architecturally designed and had loads of character. Each room was a pleasure to be in and the well thought decor fitted the home. The surrounding gardens were unique and lovely to walk through in the evenings, and the children were delighted to find all sorts of wild life on our doorstep. We saw families of quails and hummingbirds, along with vultures and condors and deer. We discovered a bocce ball court at the bottom of the garden and spent every evening there playing rounds and having drinks. The caretakers live nearby and they were delightful. They looked after us very well, offering great suggestions on where to visit and helping us out if needed, but they were also discreet and gave us the privacy we had sought when looking for a place to stay in Big Sur. I'd recommend this house without hesitation. It's a magical place.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

I just returned from an amazing long weekend here with a big group of friends here. Our days looked something like this: wake up, drink coffee while enjoying the incredible view, hike, drink wine with friends while enjoying the incredible view, eat big dinner. The accommodations were very nice and the house had everything we needed...but come here for the view and the location. We walked down to Pfeiffer Beach twice. We could easily have gone all three days without getting back into our cars...although we did want to get some french fries and cocktails at Nepenthe. Matt was extremely responsive and helpful. I would highly recommend coming here with your friends. You won't regret it. I would be very happy to spend a long weekend here every year for the rest of my life. Seriously.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, girls getaway.

The location is very nice, the manager Matt, also very nice, the view, setting and architecture nice. However, the house and windows/screens were dirty. Lots of interior cobwebs. Kitchen had former guest's food, pullout cutting board loaded with old food, coffee maker not working, and tub wouldn't hold water. I'd expect for the rates charged that everything would be very clean. We left after two days and were not reimbursed for the balance of stay. While there was a charge for professional cleaning included in the tab, I doubt this was done and if it was, they need a new cleaning company.Owner response: We understand that renters have very high expectations for a luxury house of this caliber and we certainly want to meet those expectations with the beauty and wild serenity of this truly amazing destination. For two years, visitors have been pleased with our rental and we have had quite a few guests plan to stay with us again when they return to Big Sur. Conditions can be a bit different from lodgings in less remote, less wild places but we have upgraded our cleaning service to a 3-4 person crew who do hotel quality work in order to insure that the house is as clean as it can be. I must mention that some of the comments in this review were not quite right. For instance, we have 3 different types of coffee maker (Kuerig, Mini-Espresso, Mr. Coffee), surely they all were not broken. Also, the jetted tub had a shampoo cap stuck in it which the property manager fixed in seconds. We learned about this renter's dissatisfaction via email after they had left and decided not to refund since we were not given a chance to address the issue. Going forward, we walk through the house with new guests in order to avoid any issues. If you love Big Sur you will love this house.

My wife and I were married in Big Sur in October 2011. We found this amazing house a couple months before and it blew away any other lodging we could imagine. Perched on a cliff you feel like you are suspended by wires looking out the windows in the living room. Yet it was a wonderful (and extremely large) outdoor space filled with beautiful japanese garden life and fit for a small gathering bbq or for kids to play. Equally, it was so romantic for the two of us to just prepare for our wedding ceremony and relax afterward. It is so much more than the pictures portray. Equally important was its accessibility. So many homes are perched along treacherous dirt roads far from the main part of Big Sur. This house is perfectly located near Pfeiffer Beach yet up a dirt road (although steep) can be handled with any car. We were in and out often. It was truly special and we will come back. Matt is an exceptional host.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
