Great getaway in the North Carolina mountains
Great getaway in the North Carolina mountains
This is a beautiful new home, located inside a private golf community between Waynesville and Sylva. The community, Balsam Mountain Preserve, is over 4,000 acres in size, but only about a third of it will be developed. The rest is set aside as a permanent nature preserve, and the result is you feel as if you are in a state park surrounded by lush green forest. The home was nicely furnished, and was exactly as we expected it to be. It is immaculately maintained, very clean and very well kept. The floor plan is perfect for family entertaining, especially the upstairs. The screened porch off the family room is awesome, it even comes with a stone fireplace. There are so many details that make the home feel very upscale - lots of wood paneling on the walls and ceilings, antique looking hardwood floors, the home looks and feels like a million dollar residence. The community has a beautiful golf course and other amenities like a pool, tennis courts, restaurant, etc., but it is for members only. You may be able to utilize some of them by paying extra, each renter will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the time of year. It's no problem if the amenities are not available to you, though, because there is so much to do and see in the local area. Waynesville and Sylva are wonderful small towns with a wealth of great restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, etc. Cherokee has all kinds of great family activities, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is only 5 minutes from the community's staffed gatehouse. Then there's Asheville, which is only about 40 minutes away. All in all, this is well worth the price, I can't imagine anyone being dissapointed with the experience of renting and enjoying this home.

About: I have lived in the mountains with my family for 8 years. Having spent a good bit of my adult life in cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and Miami, I can say with confidence that this is my family's last stop. This home sits at the crossroads of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, and there is no where else on earth that I've found that has the beauty, the peace and the restorative nature of this special place. My children are 15 and 11, and I feel blessed with the knowledge that they have grown up in a very unique and cultural rich environment. You'll feel the same way as well after just one week!!
Balsam Mountain Preserve is unlike any mountain community I've ever seen. They all have beautiful views and picturesque settings, but living in Balsam is like living in a national forest. Most of the mountain can never be developed because it's in a conversation trust, so there is a sense of peace and a connection with nature that is real. The 24 hour manned security is also a plus. Balsam feels secluded, but it's really just ten minutes from Waynesville and Sylva. Both towns offer a huge variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Asheville is only 40 minutes away. Finally, the access to Balsam is hard to beat. It's located just off the Great Smoky Mountain Expressway, so it's literally a four-lane drive from anywhere - no 2-lane twisty mountain roads to maneuver to get here. It's easier to get to than any mountain location I've ever seen.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Balsam is a private club community with amenities that you and your family can enjoy. Highlights include an Arnold Palmer Signature golf course, an equestrian center, a heated Jr. Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts, a restaurant, and over 30 miles of hiking trails that wind across streams and waterfalls throughout the property, some reaching elevations as high as 5,400 feet. The trail system is truly amazing! My wife and kids love to get outdoors and have all-day adventures on the trails with peace of mind, knowing they are inside a private community. One of the trails leads to a private campground inside Balsam that has outdoor grills, a trout stream, a covered Pavilion, and camping sites. One of my kids' favorite spots!! There is also a Nature Center at Balsam staffed by full-time trained and educated naturalists, an experience not to be missed. Make sure you check out the live Birds of Prey program, which includes a close-up look at a beautiful Bald Eagle. The Nature Center is a real treat for young and old alike.
