                  Car: Necessary

Puerto Nuevo Public Beach – It is just a 5 minutes’ drive or a 15 minutes’ walk from the house. Crystal clear waters and golden sand for the perfect sun tan. A huge rock formation protects the cove from open waters. Although, you could climb the rocks to enjoy the beauty of the Atlantic Ocean we always recommend doing it with extreme caution, and always paying attention to the coming waves. The rocks are made of solidified sand with very sharp edges, so the use of sturdy shoes is a must. We recommend not to climb these rocks during storm surges or swells (December thru April) as the waves can cover the rocks making it very difficult to walk by. Between the two big rocks in the north side, there is a small pond named “la pasa”, a very quiet place where locals enjoy diving without the risk of ocean currents. On the south side of the rocks, there is a place known as the “Mar Muerto”, a small quiet ocean pond with warm waters. Behind the “Mar Muerto”, there is a well-known place called El Corsario (the Pirate), an impressive sinkhole formed by thousands of years of ocean force carving the rock walls. This is a natural beauty that can be observed at your own risk and from a safe distance. Diving from the rocks is prohibited due to the extreme danger.

In every corner going to the beach you can enjoy the traditional puertorrican fritters (bacalaítos, alcapurrias made with crab or beef), chicken or marlin skewers, and coconut water or maví. If you prefer more healthy options, you can visit Costeño, the food truck that serves wraps, sandwiches, Mallorcas (Spanish sandwich, awesome!), natural juices and great espresso coffee.

A little bit of Vega Baja

If you prefer tranquility and the unique flavor of little artisanal towns, we wait for you in Vega Baja. This picturesque coastal town is localized at the north of Puerto Rico, in front of the Atlantic Ocean. It is called “La Ciudad del Melao Melao” in reference to the cane sugar juice “melao” because Vega Baja was a sugar growing town. It is said that the traveling merchants produced the sweetest melao.

Tortuguero Lagoon Natural Reserve – Road PR#687 Km.1.2. Tortuguero is Puerto Rico’s only freshwater lagoon with a direct connection to the ocean. With a great scenic beauty, this place is of great ecological importance. Swamps, endemic flora and fauna, white silica sand deposits, limestone domes and dozens of natural springs form this unique natural resource. If you feel lucky, you may want to try your fishing rod, or enjoy a nice walk on one of many trails. The park also has gazebos and benches. Swimming is not allowed.

Playa Los Tubos – Road PR#686. A 10 minutes’ drive from the beach house, in the town of Manatí. It is the perfect beach for surfing. During the month of July, locals host “El Festival Playero”. It has a long sandy shore great for sunbathing, and a recretional area with gazebos great for kids.

Casa Alonso Museum (787-855-1364). Betances Street #34. It is an art and history museum. The two floors structure was built during the Spanish rule using masonry. You may enjoy the old colonial furniture, folk puertorrican and Latin-American music. Also, it has many music related artifacts and decorative pieces.

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario – Located in the town Centre, a majestic neoclassic building was built in 1860. This architectural beauty was declared a national, monument by the Puerto Rican Culture Institute in 1984.

Fénix Theater (787-855-5907) The Theater is located between Luis Muñoz Rivera and José Julián Acosta Streets. This neoclassic architectonic treasure was built in 1917 with room for 800 people.

América Theater (787-858-6447) José Julián Acosta Street. With an art-deco style, this theater was built in 1924 and run shows until 1985.

Always ask for the catch of the day and if you like hearty soups, don't forget the “Asopao de Mariscos” or Seafood Stew.

                  Owner info

About the owner: I grew-up in beaches of Vega Baja. My brother and I decided to renovate the second level house, not only to be used during family reunions, but to share this treasure with the rest of the world. Our parents live in the first level house. The second floor property was renovated in the summer of 2013, transforming the existing spaces back to the original conditions our grandpa Tato built many years ago. Our house is your house, and we would like you to enjoy it and maintain as much as we do.

Why the Owner Chose Vega Baja:
This is the family house, where Pamy’s parents live (24/7 on paradise!) in the first floor. On special occasions, the upper level is the place for their siblings to gather and celebrate. The house is full of stories of generations that grow-up enjoying the marvelous surroundings. Many times; great grandparents, grandparents, sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren relaxed together in this placid ocean realm. At only 25 miles from San Juan, this is the perfect hideaway. Just walk for three minutes and you will be exploring with your kids the marine life of the nearby tiny ocean ponds. The ocean side of the property has the perfect conditions for body boarding or scuba diving, weather permit. Except during high tides, beach walks are great at any time of the day.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our heart was born in this place and; we know you will leave yours… three generations have been raised here… a place treasured and magical at the same time. The beach house flirts, accordingly to the season, with the ocean waves. The view is simply spectacular. Nature’s role begins during the morning when the sun comes up, hesitantly, between the gigantic rocks which rest upon the sea. Afterwards, the star makes its entrance radiating over the beach which still sleeps. During morning hours, because the house is a second floor, fish can be seen dancing through the reef. Later during the day pelicans appear on a daily flight searching for their prey in the lively sea. From the window, it looks as if one could touch the pelicans. The dusk is a spectacle, from the sun falling slowly dazzling the water in a small beach concealed by rocks, up to the colors that are drawn in the clouds: the shades of orange fall in love with the blue of sea, portraying a work of art in the horizon. The nights are romantic and mysterious when there is no moon. One only hears the sound of the sea, the eyes only see darkness. When the moon is full a radiant path is drawn in the ocean, around one can only perceive the trace of light in the blackness of the night…
