Matfield Station - Lodging in the Scenic Kansas Flint Hills
- Minimum stay:Contact manager

- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Great lodging for travelers and vacationers, in the most beautiful part of the Flint Hills of Kansas, surrounded by the last remaining, original tallgrass prairie, never plowed. Three efficiency apartments, or 'casitas,' with views of the sunrise over the valley of the South Fork of the Cottonwood River.
Great for artist retreats, birdwatchers, hikers, trainwatchers, or just for peaceful weekend getaways, vacations, or sabbaticals. Built in 1924 by the Santa Fe Railroad, the bunkhouse is newly restored and comfortably furnished.
Just 50 feet from the BNSF tracks, this is a great place for viewing the trains. Restored by former Chicago architect Bill McBride, the building is well-insulated, air-conditioned, features radiant floor heating and all modern amenities.

Could not have been happier with our two-night stay. Featured in 2012 on the Topeka, KS public TV show "Sunflower Journeys" this refurbished railroad bunkhouse was built in 1924. The owners have completely refitted the interiors with comfort and style in mind. It is maybe 50-feet from the rails where 60 trains per day pass by. Amazingly, they do not intrude on the peaceful feeling or on sleeping. Well equipped kitchen, and everything is very clean and artfully decorated. Within 20-minutes of two wonderful restaurants that are well worth the drive. Just around the bend from Pioneer Bluff Gallery, a must see for those looking for fine contemporary art. This is a very special place to find peace. Make time to visit the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (just 25-minutes to the north) for a hike and a rare opportunity to view bison in their natural habitat.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: Bob and Pat, we so enjoyed meeting you and look forward to your next visit. Thanks for checking out the restaurants in Strong City and Cottonwood Falls and for including such great detail in your review. It was a pleasure spending just a little bit of time tromping around the prairie with you. Yours, Julia

My husband and I stayed one night at Matfield Station as our first getaway since our daughter was born 10 months ago. What a refreshing, comfortable, relaxing retreat. We stayed in the middle unit, and found it to be such an inviting space that we almost hated leaving to go do our traipsing around that we planned to do in the county. It was spotlessly clean, and perfect for the two of us. We regretted not having enough hours in the day to use the well-appointed kitchen, and although there was a brisk north wind, we sat out the back to watch the trains thundering by (a bonus!). The queen memory foam bed was awesome and we slept in for the first time in almost a year :) We are already planning our return trip, and hope to bring friends to rent out the other units as well. What a unique, beautiful place.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: I'm so sorry that I missed seeing you and I'm really glad to hear that you can't wait to return. Come soon! Julia

We were greeted by two trains, a bevy of bluebirds, a flurry of finches, flighty vultures with verve! Fabulous!! We will be back !Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We loved the bunkhouse because of the view and serenity of it all. Very neat and clean, comfortable bed. The trains didn't bother us at all because we live by a railroad track, just not that close. Beautiful scenery and drive to Counsel Grove. The directions to Matfield Station lead us right there. I wish all of the windows had some kind of shade on them. Some of them were covered, but not all of them. When we got there at 11:00 PM; I wish there was more light going up the hill to the bunkhouse because we could not see. Owners were very friendly. Would I stay there again, yes indeed!Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We just returned from a 4 night stay at Matfield Station and had a great time there. The building is an historic railway bunkhouse that has been converted into three studio apartments by the owner/architect. Each has a different character and outfitting to accommodate different needs. I would recommend discussing the units with the manager before booking to make sure your needs are met. The building is set up on a hill just off of the Scenic Byway 177 and adjacent to the tracks (it was a RR bunkhouse after all.) The owner's property extends over the tracks and up the hill which puts you just a 5 min. hike from an expansive view of the prairie hills. There are just several things to be aware of before you go. 1. Trains. They come by regularly, but since there is no RR crossing in Matfield, they don't blow their horns unless you wave at them. We were traveling with a 2 year old and found the noise of the trains to be a non-issue. 2. Food. The kitchen is well appointed and there is a great grill out front, but you should bring your food with you as you won't want to have to drive half an hour for groceries once you're here. However, restaurants are an easier option if you prefer. 3. These apts. have very comfortable beds and the bathrooms have showers. So if you need uncomfortable beds or insist on a bath, you're out of luck unless you can find a trough outside that could function as either. The bottom line is we'll be back and with more friends and family next time.Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

About: We (Bill and Julia McBride) moved to Matfield Green, Kansas from the city of Chicago in 2006. We are city folks having a blast in the country. We love it so much we had to share it with someone - so our son Luke was born in 2007. Now we want to share our country life with you!
Why Matfield Green:
We purchased Matfield Station in 2001 after our second trip to Chase County, Kansas. The historic Santa Fe building was one good rain away from collapse and we couldn't stand to see that happen. Bill, the architect, worked with our friend Pat, the carpenter, to restore the building - with Julia (and our friend and partner Karl Rohlich) cheering on the project. Bill and Julia lived at Matfield Station while we built our house just 400 feet away. We love the views, the open space, the fresh air, the horses across the road, the sunsets, and the wind on the prairie - and we know you will too.
