Paradise found

Guest: Brenda (Pine, AZ)
Date of Stay: 02/07/12 Review Submitted: 02/07/12

My friend and I stayed at the cottage in early January of this year. I can truly say that the view from the lanai of this cottage would be hard to beat....anywhere. With the lack of traffic near the East end of this island, one can hear the waves coming to shore from down below. With Maui in the foreground to the left and Lanai on the right and dense tree canopy between the shore and the property, the view is unbelievably beautiful. I awoke early in the morning to see the gorgeous sunrises from behind Maui and it was an emotional experience. The east end of Molokai is an adventure just driving along the narrow road which seems the only thing evident that mankind has touched this magical place because of the never-ending dense green lushness. Molokai is definitely not for everyone....especially those in search of big showy hotels with trendy restaurants and designer shops. Look for those on a different island. I loved Molokai and hope to return there again someday....and when I do this lovely little cottage is the place I want to stay.

A Dream Honeymoon

Guest: Meli V. (Berkeley, CA)
Date of Stay: 10/10/11 Review Submitted: 01/20/12

The Hilltop Cottage was perfect for our relaxing visit to Molokai. Private, breathtaking views, whirlpool bathtub... not to mention a beautiful collection of books on various subjects about the Islands and Molokai. We spent hours reading and eating local produce while taking a break from the many activities and excursions offered on the island.

Hilltop Cottage is realy a Palace!

Date of Stay: 03/26/11 Review Submitted: 04/18/11

We stayed at the Hilltop Cottage from 3/26/2011 thru 4/3/2011. I find it difficult to describe this little piece of paradise in so few words, simply put our stay was wonderful! If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, private, safe, get-away; look no further! The open airy design with the most incredible view is so welcoming and homey! You will find a very well equiped kitchen, spaceous bath, and comfortable furnishings. The only thing missing would have been a couple of beach chairs. I didn't ask ahead of time, and well we aren't as young as we used to be! I would suggest that you take some time to research Molokai'i. There is so much to do and see. I think the most important thing to convey "If your in a hurry your on the wong island!" Things here are not commercial, the only people in a hurry are locals on their way to market on Saturday, or on their way home from work. So be kind, let them pass. Always remember you are a visitor. The people of Molokai'i are very friendly, just be sure to treat them the same, sorry I think this is important! I would highly recommend a stay here. I do think I left part of my heart there. Do not hesitate to email the owner, she was very helpful and kind. The neighbors just behind the cottage are wonderful people. Hope next time we have a better chance to visit with them! For a car rental I suggest Island Kine. Great rate, even though we lost our key at Halawa! (don't do that!) I could rattle on about this wonderful place for a long time, just make up your mind and GO!!!

Beautiful, Private, Peaceful

Guest: Ian (Oahu)
Date of Stay: 07/13/10 Review Submitted: 08/12/10

My wife and I spent 5 days at the Hilltop Cottage. I wish we could have spent 5 months there. The cottage was beautiful and comfortable. I dont think you can find that type of privacy and peacefulness anywhere else in Hawaii. Moloka'i is a beautiful and relaxing place to get away to. Papohaku beach is amazing. We found a trail through the forest west of the Kalaupapa look out and saw wild goats and incredible views of the north shore cliffs. We drank coconuts on the beach at Halawa. We found a dirt road just before Maunaloa that ended up on a beautiful deserted beach. Thank you Kehau, both Moloka'i and your Hilltop Cottage were amazing.

Aloha Kehau, Just a quick note to let you know how much Steve and I enjoyed our vacation at the cottage. The setting was just amazing, the view incredible - I could never tire of looking at Maui and Lanai across the ocean in the distance. We loved everything about the cottage, private location, peaceful, fantastic vintage decor. We could not of had a more relaxing time, it was just a shame we had to leave. Hopefully, we will see the cottage and wonderful Molokai again next year. Mahalo, Lisa and Steve

Perfect Honeymoon Location!

Guest: Bunney (West Sussex, England)
Date of Stay: 06/24/10 Review Submitted: 07/04/10

Thank you Kehau for sharing your little slice of paradise with us. We found the Hilltop cottage a clean and airy space with all the amenities necessary to make it home from home. It provided a comfortable setting with some of the best views on the island. Nestled in the foot of the mountains, it overlooks three islands with fantastic views of the ocean. You can still hear the waves in bed! Definitely the best property by far. Kehau was friendly and helpful when needed, without compromising our privacy. Molokai is the original Hawaii, definitely for those who want to escape the tourist traps. We enjoyed putting our feet up on the porch and taking in the view. We found it easy to slip into the pace of life here and left feeling truly refreshed and relaxed. We look forward to returning in the future and happily recommend the Hilltop Cottage to those interested in relaxing on Molokai.

Hello Kehau, my husband and I had a great week on Molokai. The Cottage was fantastic! We spent hours on the lanai, watching the sun rise and looking at the whales. Although staying at the Condo was not as spectacular as the Cottage, we really enjoyed exploring the west end of the island. (And the Condo was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Very nice. ) I left a note in the condo for you, but I don't know if you got it or not. We had to leave the Condo Saturday morning earlier than we planned, due to the threat of the tsunami. Because we didn't know what to expect, we took the little cooler with us so we could take some things that we had in the refrigerator. We ended up giving the cooler to the woman from Island Kine car rental agency. I would like to pay you for the cooler, so if you could let me know how much, I would appreciate it. It is obvious that you put a lot of effort into providing a comfortable place to stay, and there were many little details that we really appreciated. Who knows what the future holds, but if we ever come to Molokai again (and I would love to), we will be in touch. Aloha, Barbara

We loved being at your place! Hopefully all was well and there wasn't too much mess for the house cleaner. We did leave everything in the garbage bin. We are interested in scheduling a stay again in November for next fall. It will be Uncle Williams birthday, 80! So what would you like us to do to secure it? We are not sure about the dates, except Nov 12th is his birthday. Don't know about the preparations, etc. Let us know what to do? Thanks Kate

Kehau & Lou, as I sit here on our last evening in the Cottage enjoying the fabulous view & a beautiful sunset, I am very greatful that I found your website during my search for lodging. I didn't know what to expect from Molokai, but our stay here has been everything I could have hoped for & more. My only regret is that we are not staying longer! The last four days have been incredibly peaceful & relaxing & the Cottage has much to do with that. For once, we did not feel the need to rush around seeing & doing everything that there is to see & do so I do not have much in the way of tips to add to this guest book. The drive to the west end & Papohaku Beach is definitely worth it (although my calves still have not recovered from walking on such soft sand!), but there are beautiful beaches nearby as well. The beach near mile marker 16 is not to be missed! The drive to the other end of the road, Halawa, is also well worth it as the scenery is spectacular! Oh, snorkeling, how could I forget snorkeling!! The snorkeling trip with Molokai Fish & Dive is worth every penny. The reef is spectacular & the turtles and manta rays were the most amazing things I have ever seen in the water. So thank you Kehau & Lou for sharing your home and beautiful Island with us ( & your rice! ) We are sad to be leaving, but we will definitely be back. Next year if we can pull it off!! Mahalo again, Heather & Mike - San Diego, CA

Today we carry our windscrubbed hearts back across the ocean. Lighter than when we came. And back at home, when we see the sun setting over the western horizon, we will entertain visions of red earth, clear water and quick footed geckos and long-necked white birds watching from the treetops like little quiet angles....Molokai, our eyes will never see the same again. Kehau, Thank you for sharing your "Slice of Paradise". We enjoyed our week her on the east side. We loved waking up to birds singing and watching the sun rise over the ocean. Our days were so peaceful, bird watching, butterfuly watching, and sitting at the beach and of course one never becomes tired of whale watching. As evening sunset colors fade and the stars come out....we know there is no other place on earth we would want to be. Of all the islands we feel Molokai has the true Aloha Spirit! We had the most wonderful time in this enchanted cottage on the hill. We watched whales & stars from the lanai & enjoyed the cool breeze & amazing views of the surroundings. We had a fantastic bike trip up to the Kamakou Preserve, a very beautiful and special place. We will recommend the snorkel trip from the Fish-n-Dive Shop. We saw spinner dolphins, whales, sea turtles, a manta ray & beautiful fish & the spectacular coral reef. We also enjoyed the Friday afternoon entertainment, food & drinks at the Hotel Molokai & yummy pizza from the Pizza Cafe. Thanks for sharing this most wonderful place. Having read many entries of those who preceeded us, it is hard to describe the beauty, peacefullness, and serenity of your cottage and island any better. My wife and I sincerely thank you for sharing your home with us and for giving us the oppertunity to become a part of this beautiful island. The time passed much too quickly and now it is time to go home....But we will return because your island your home have become a part of us. Thank you so very much.

My daughter and I enjoyed a week's stay at the cottage in 2006. It was a great trip. We slept so well in this wonderful place--no insomnia, no discomforts. We don't hesitate to recommend Kehau's lovely cottage to anyone who desires to retreat off the beaten path. It is a memory you will never forget--to watch the ships sail by in the moonlight against the other islands and a backdrop of a starlit sky-- Molokai is a terrific adventure, and this cottage is truly lovely.

The view of the stars and Maui are unforgettable. Your hospitality will always be remembered. Hope to see you again! We really enjoyed our week here at your place and would love to stay longer. Perhaps the winds will carry us back here again. Anyway, all the blessings to you and a big "Mahalo"

I'm sitting here, trying to find new ways to describe perfection, and all I can think to say is: Look out the window, at the view, and you will see and know perfection. My husband celebrated his 50th birthday here and we could think of no better way to celebrate than to spend our time on Molokai. Lovely beaches (esp. Dixie Maru), stunning sights (Halawa Valley) and a little education too, (the NeNe goose sanctuary). Thank-you for sharing this beautiful cottage. It let's us Mainlanders pretend for a little while that we are Kamaaina. Mahalo Nui Loa!

Kehau and Lou, thank you for one of our most enjoyable vacations. We loved the cottage, from the movies in small movie library to the comfy bed, to the whirlpool tub! You have everything we needed here and much more. The drive to the end of the road to Halawa Valley was beautiful, we even saw a Monk Seal on the beach! The Mule Ride to Kalaupapa was Robert's favorite. So beautiful and peaceful on the pennisula, even with such an infamous history surrounding us. We are not ready to leave and will miss the deck views. We plan to be back soon! Mahalo

Gentle winds, warm water and warmer similes everywhere. Scuba diving with Bill Kapune is highly recommended. He knows where to go! Eddie Tanaka is THE guide for the Halawa Valley Hike. So much to see and learn (and respect). Jamming at the beach and hearing local music was great. Played long into the night with waves for accompanienment and bright stars to light our way. A wonderful sunrise (and moonrise)everyday. Such a joy to spend even the briefest of time in this peaceful and beautiful place. We will be back! Mahalo Nui Loa!

Kehau & Lou, We enjoyed your cottage, it was as beautiful as you described it plus more. The view from the lanai was absolutely incredible especially at night. The lights over on the island of Maui were great. We could lay in bed & look out at the lights. The view of the mountain out the back of the cottage was also incredible. You truly do live in paradise. The island is very peaceful, layed back & very very friendly. All the local people smile & wave. We met a few people at Molokai Hotel, very interesting people, saw some hula dancing. Great! Thank you so much! Hope to come back again.

Kehau & Lou - This cottage was wverything we expected and MORE! The photos on the web barely represent the actual ambience that is here everyday - rain or shine! And to add to the charm...when the lights were out, (Friday) the moon still had enough glow to give out more than enough lite to see clearly. Thank you & Mahalo for making our honeymoon the most memorable it could possibly be! The small town charm of the island only serves to remind us of where we came from (before San Diego) We hope to return again someday! Love to you both!

The magical play of moonshadow through the raftrers on the deck. The stars blinking in & out as tropical clouds drift on a warm tropical night. The ocean of green canopy. The white birds soaring above. The powerful, yet soothing rythm of the surf. The magenta sky over Maui at the break of day. The sudden cool drumbeat of a tropical shower. The gentle caress of a cooling breeze on a warm afternoon. The play of headlights through the trees below, like Menehune lights at night. All this, and so much more are the memories you've helped to create. We will return again. Mahalo! Gift card writings: Kehau & Lou, Our 4 days here have been a whole lifetime too few. What an awesome place!! Your hospitality is beyond words. If anything we would have enjoyed more time with you to hear your personal stories of the island & people. Next time, an you may rest assured there will be a next time, wse will stay longer....(and I will bring that long sleeved shirt for the horse ride!) We have enjoyed a wonderful week here on Molokai. Although the big storm early in the week took us by surprise, we enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the cottage. This was our second trip to Molokai so we enjoyed revisiting favorite spots and finding new ones. We drove to the end of the road in Molokai Ranch and found the jetty where the outrigger race begins. Thank you so much, Kehau for sharing your beautiful hilltop cottage with us. We hope to visit you again soon.
