My wife and I spent a week at the cabin with our 10 year old daughter. We loved the accommodations inside the cabin. We were there during one of the hottest spells in years, and the AC units were more than adequate (of course, we are from Alabama, so accustomed to heat). We found the patio to be too hot to spend much time there, but I understand there is an umbrella now available for the table. We liked the option of either spending time on the private deck or getting to know some of our neighbors at the deck at the end of the road. We did not spend a lot of our time inside, except on the day it rained, but found it quiet and cozy. We had no problem with people passing by on their way to and from the beach. Throughout the course of the week, we found pretty much everything we needed in the house. I recommend that you look through the cupboards and closets when you first get there, so that you know exactly what you have available to you. I grew up 30 miles north and went to college in Holland, so I know the area quite well. Be advised though, that there is no cell phone or computer coverage at the cabin (that was fine with me). If you are unfamiliar with the area, I recommend bringing a map, or buying a local map as soon as you get there. The roads around Lake Macatawa and in Holland can be difficult to figure out. I have already recommended the cabin to my nephew and his wife, who live in Greenville, South Carolina, but come back to Michigan to visit family on a regular basis. I found that I had easy access to everything I needed, but that I could have almost as much isolation as I wanted. Growing up on Lake Michigan, I expect that there will be people walking along the beach, so I had no problem with the traffic in and along the lake. I can't comment on the value versus other properties, but can say that we thoroughly enjoyed our time there.

Owner response: Thanks Tim for the review! Yes, we now have a very large umbrella for the patio table which provides nice shade. And I added a Holland map in the Welcome Book to help guests navigate the area. Often cell service is inconsistent on Lake Michigan...I have Verizon and never have a problem with reception. There is a land line for communication if necessary.

I love Lake Michigan and my wife and I are always looking for a nice place to stay that is on the lake. The size of the beach that is part of the property is very narrow but it is next to a somewhat larger size beach that belongs to the local neighborhood. So even though you are fairly hemmed in by private beaches (one neighbor let us know very sternly that we were trespassing), you do have enough room to stretch and enjoy the beach and water. The summer weekend crowds were actually quite moderate. They do walk by the front of the property. so we kept the front curtains closed when we wanted privacy, and the gate closed, although that didn't keep some local children from coming through and playing on the porch. I only mention some of the privacy issues for those of you that find them important. Holland State Park is just down the road and visible from the property. The summer weekend crowds were quite large but the beach there is very nice and very large. The summer week day crowds were not all that bad. There is a nice light house there. You actually can walk to the park from the property. The pictures included in the listing give a very good feel for the inside and outside of the property. It can hold up to four with a child upstairs in a nice room. The stairs are moderately steep and narrow, but for a nimble child there shouldn't be a problem. The two bedrooms down stairs hold two in one room and one person in the other. The rooms are nice. There are window air conditioners in the master bedroom, in the upstairs bedroom and in the main living room, with a ceiling fan. With all these running, the cottage was barely comfortable on a very hot summer day. There isn't any insulation in the cottage. The cottage had almost all of the conveniences of home. Just bring food, your favorite coffee (there is a coffee maker, filters, and some coffee and tea provided), and your personal hygiene stuff. Although, they did provide some very nice soap. The private deck is very nice. It sits high on the bluff with a nice view from Holland State Park to quite far in the opposite direction. The view is partially blocked by a tree that is growing in from of the deck. If you go to the deck or the patio out the back door, be careful, there is a step down on the concrete walk that you can stumble on, especially at night. But, all in all, the deck and patio are very nice. The cost versus value is good, you can get a cheaper place farther from the lake.

Owner response: To clarify the beach boundaries: We have 120'lake frontage and the neighboring county access has only 33'. The huge frontage from the receding Lake is owned by the Idlewood Association Park (thanks to the owner's father who incorporated the beach under water in 1972). So there is far greater frontage than the neighbors often communicate.
