If it's luxury accommodations you're after, stay at the St. Regis (and pay dearly). If it's an inviting, cozy & authentic Kauai farmhouse with mature, well-kempt gardens and more outdoor space than you'll know what to do with that you're after, read on. Our trip included seven adults and 3 baby boys. Immediately upon arrival, we loved the house. Yes, it's old and funky; but this is a good thing. It's livable and usable -- not the kind of place where you're afraid to sit down or scuff up polished floors. In a word -- the house is durable and incredibly cozy (but not in the "too small" way). The lanai is wonderful, and we spent almost the entirety or our at-home time there. We ate every meal, drank every drink, fed and played with the kids, read books or just sat and listened to the birds, watching the geckos, listening to the breeze tickle the palms. The layout served our group well. There was a crib (modern & safe) upstairs for our little guy, in a small room (also with a twin bed) next to the bedroom we slept in. The 'Jack & Jill' bathroom that some have complained about worked out just fine for us. Simply devise a system so you know if someone is in there, as you would anywhere else. Keep both pocket doors closed and knock before entry. Problem solved. The kitchen was stocked with the basics (including detergent for the dishwasher), but you might want to bring your own knives as the supplied ones are dangerously dull. There's a microwave, ice-maker, coffee-maker, and everything worked just fine and we weren't wanting for anything -- we cooked every single meal here, and dined outside on the lanai by candle-light. In the interest of keeping this review as real as possible, we did have a few issues -- none serious. A broken bathroom sink drain upon arrival, which the owner responded to immediately and had repaired as fast as "island time" would allow. The plumber came out, removed the surfboard from his van to get to his tools, and was in and out of there in 20 minutes. The lack of screens in the bedroom downstairs with the two twin beds was inviting for a few mosquitos, and while we appreciate the fact there was a modern side-load washing machine, the dryer was so noisy you didn't want to be in the room with it. All very minor issues and barely worth mentioning, but thought you might want to know. We'll be back, no doubt about it -- if not for anything but to play frisbee across that vast expanse of lawn over-looking Hanalei Bay!

The only difficulty we had is this property is VERY difficult to find in the dark! Since the house sits back from the road and the house number is not visable from the driveway and the numbers that are posted are for other houses further down the little road that we thought was a driveway. We drove past it several times and ended up asking someone that was a neighbor. Attempts to call Susan went to a "full voice mail" and the other number given went to a voice mail that never called us back. That said everything else was very consistent with the VRBO listing. It is listed as a "farm house" and the wiring, plumbing, etc are all consistent - a little funky but everything worked and met our expectations based on the listing and photos. Susan was great to deal with, prompt to respond to emails and we found the house clean, comfortable and well equipped. Our family prefers the more laid back atmosphere than you would find in the resort. It is a short distance to the shopping center in Princeville and easily walkable so that is convenient. For our family group of 7 it was a great choice.

This property provided the perfect location for our family vacation! It easily equaled its listing on VRBO. The house design and yard provide great space for a large group - we were 8 adults- while at the same time providing individual space - 5 bedrooms. The kitchen and grill allowed us to cook most of our meals at the house. The fresh fruit was plentiful and delicious. If we could plan this vacation again, we would once again choose to stay at this property. Our only drawback was that with the given directions, we had a hard time finding it in the dark while it was raining. The house number was not at the road and because it was night, we couldn't see the house easily. (It is approximately .5 miles from the corner by the police/fire station to the house and the numbers showing out front at the road are 4951 and 4965.) Sorry about that wee hour of the morning phone call, Susan! The owner was a joy to work with and provided a great value in opening her home. Everything we needed was there - even beach towels and boogie boards! We bought The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed (book) by Andrew Doughty before we traveled. It was a phenomenal guide and really helped us enjoy the island. I would highly recommend this book (or app) for your visit to Kauai. We would highly recommend this property to others. Mahola!

Incredible property with all the comforts of home. Even when it was raining we were in love with this charming house and the gardens, mountains and oceans surrounding it. The stars are so clear from here!! We felt like we were sitting on top of the world!! There is certainly something to be said for seeing mountains, waterfalls, rainbows, ocean, sand, and lush green valley all from one spot! We will never forget our time on Kauai's spectacular north shore.

Kauai is my favorite island in the Hawaiian chain because of its casual and relaxed atmosphere. The locals are in slow motion. No One is in a hurry. With my hectic schedule and lifestyle, I crave this attitude when I am on vacation. This property reflects the island vibe perfectly. It ‘s a low-key jewel sitting on top of a spectacular bluff overlooking the stellar Hanalei Bay. The views from the house of the Napali Coast with its rugged mossy green peaks are breathtaking. If you are expecting high gloss perfection this is not the right Island for you. Hanalei has remained pristine in its natural beauty. It is not over developed or glitzy. For a true Hawaiiana experience this is where you want to be. The beauty of Kauai is found in the nature of the surrounding paradise. This home is a short drive to numerous beautiful hikes and beaches and very close to both Hanalei town and Princeville center. The owner, Susan was really helpful in making my visit to the island a pleasant one. She has lovingly made this home cozy and a true Hanalei experience. For those who need an occasional injection of “modern Hawaii” the St. Regis Resort is a few minutes away but if sitting on a screened lanai with the warm breeze wafting thru the plumeria trees from the window outside your bedroom sounds good to you…. the Hanalei Bay View Farmhouse is the perfect spot.

Our week in this Hanalei Bay house was unforgettable. Spending days and evenings on this lush 2 1/2 acres overlooking Hanalei Bay and Bali Hi is a wonderful lifelong memory for our family. It is a great feeling to have so much space for a group both inside the house and on the grounds. The owner was very easy to work with and went to great lengths to both answer our questions and make suggestions for a great stay. Thank you for the owner to making our vacation so enjoyable!

We stayed in the property from 12/28/11 to 1/6/10. The house has a downstairs bathroom and an upstairs bathroom. The "Jack and Jill " bathroom upstairs is ONE long bathroom with a shower in the middle and two toilets and sinks on either side of that shower. The bathroom can be accessed from the master or the hallway, however there is not divider or door inside the bathroom, therfore there is NO privacy. Two people can each use a toilet at the same time and have a conversation. All of the floors in this home are painted plywood. We experienced many inconveniences at the property that we have never experienced at any other vrbo homes. The barbeque was empty upon trying to barbeque the second night. Inconvenient when you have 6 people who are hungry after a full day of vacation. The fourth night the dishwasher and refrigerator lost power. We needed to search for a circuit breaker in the dark at 10:30. The electricity in this farmhouse cannot be code. There is an extension cord in the kitchen and one in the dining room . One of the windows in the dining room is boarded up. The property is for sale and we did have a couple of people drive onto the property and get out while we were out sitting on the lawn . The last day of the stay we arrived back to the house after a long day of fun at the beach to find that the water was disconnected due to non payment. My husband contacted the water company and got them to turn the water back on in an hour. The owner claimed that the water bill is on auto payand she had no idea, however the water company assured us that they do not disconnect service for a one time missed payment. We also found a previous note dated one month ago regarding non payment. We spent way too much time of our vacation time having to deal with these types of things. I would not recommend this property due to the accomodations and the attitude of the owner.
