Many people think that this apartment is on the most beautiful pedestrian street in BCN (and if you don´t believe us have a look yourself at the Links below. (It is also one of the safest streets as it is tucked just behind the police station on the Via Laietana.) In the background you can see the wall of a 14th century monastery, just 20 meters from the apartment. Part of the reason why the street is such a treat is that it is 3 meters wide - yes, less than 10 feet! (But don´t worry - the bedrooms are at the back of the apartment. On leaving the apartment you step back into medieval Barcelona.
WALK EVERYWHERE IN THE OLD CITY
The open plan living area is done in 'Modernista' style with a mosaic-type dining table, period mirror, traditional Catalan vaulted ceilings and the original (recently treated) wooden beams. There are new parquet floors throughout. There are 2 double bedrooms (one with a queen-size bed and the other with a trundle bed) and one single bedroom. The shower in the new bathroom will help you cool off after exploring the city on foot. There is Catalan sunlight to wake up to and enjoy all day long. The apartment is on the 2nd (real) floor - 2 flights up (no elevator). The internet connection at the computer desk gives you unlimited telephone calls to Spanish land lines. The bus stop on the Via Laietana will take you to the beach in air-conditioned comfort in 5 minutes - walk there in under 20 minutes
WALK ALL AROUND THE GOTHIC QUARTER
There is, of course, a full (new) kitchen, but who goes to BCN to cook? Within a one-minute walk of the apartment there are over 45 restaurants (including the unmissable Els 4 Gats - google it), the then café where the teenage Picasso had his first exhibition in 1899.
OWNER WILL MAKE SURE YOU DON'T STARVE!
I'll give you a list of the best (and most reasonable) local restaurants where the locals eat (you'll be the only tourists there!) as well as the out of the way small cafes and bars where interesting people drop in to have a drink and a chat. And where to find mojitos for €3.50!
And I'll let you in on the Gothic Quarter's best kept secret - the address of the wonderful local restaurant where, for only € 9, the Spanish mama will serve you a real home-cooked 3-course meal. (Believe it or not, my favourite is slow-cooked pig's cheek! (galtes in Catalan); but don't worry - there other dishes to choose from).
WALK TO THE CATHEDRAL - 3 minutes
While there is, of course, air-conditioning, the apartment is naturally air-cooled and ventilated by leaving the front and rear balcony double doors (floor to ceiling) open so that a nice breeze comes through the apartment. The narrow street, with 7 dress shops, a painter, artisans (puppet-maker, cabinet maker and watch-maker), curio shops and restaurants, is actually a stop on the Modernist Route (google it), so there is life on the street till after midnight. (Tourists of the better type, as it were, and not too many of them!). You are a 2-minute walk (across the Via Laietana) to the Music Palace, one of Barcelona's treasures (google Palau de la Musica) and one of the best places in Barcelona for a cup of coffee. Or enjoy an al fresco drink in at the café in Cathdral Square (3 minutes' stroll) or in Music Palace Square.
THE STREET AND AREA ARE VERY VERY SAFE SAFE SAFE
The street is tucked behind Police Headquarters and it is so safe that the expensive dressmaker boutique just a few doors up from the apartment does not see a need to have metal shutters over her shop window at night. And the dresses go for up to €800! See the photo below of the shop taken at 2 AM. And none of my tenants or friends who have stayed at the apartment (nor I) have ever had the slightest problem in the area around the apartment at any time, day or night. (I suppose being just behind Police Headquarters helps!)
WALK EVERYWHERE EXPLORING THE OLD CITY
But the real treat of the apartment is that 25 seconds from the hustle and bustle of the Via Laietana you are on a beautiful, very quiet (and well-lit) medieval street straight out of Cervantes and just 20 meters from the old monastery of Santa María de Montsío (1371). On the other side of the monastery, 25 seconds away, is a new children's playground with a café and the remains of the original Roman aqueduct. Plan your day at the cafe with the monastery and aqueduct right there. A walk through the Gothic Quarter or to El Born from the apartment is a walk back in time. There are 9 ceramic murals on my street (one is 5' x 3') with historical allusions or poetry.
WALK TO PASEO DE GRACIA TO SHOP - WHY PAY FOR TAXIS?
Plaza Catalunya, the heart of Barcelona, is a 4-minute walk from the apartment. The Passeig de Gracia with its designer shops and Modernist buildings, begins there. . At the Plaza Catalunya 2 metro lines, 2 train lines and 20 bus lines stop there. .
You can (and will) WALK EVERYWHERE from this apartment and save on time and taxi money.
I'll send you an email telling you where the jazz clubs, salsa dancing, wine tastings, cheese-tastings, beer tastings, local bars with tapas for €2 and wine for €1 per glass are, not to mention the tiny bars (14 sq. meters) where you have to chat with locals), I 'll also tell you where you can hear operatic arias or baroque music in a senyorial fuedal palace. All within walking distance from the apartment!
NO SMOKING - NO PETS - KIDS WELCOME
The apartment is for people who like to breathe clean air!. No pets are allowed. No parties are allowed as it is a residential building. Please respect the people who live there. Palau de la Musica Catalana and a Modernist architectural gem and heritage site. One of the best places for morning coffee, either on the terrace or inside with the "Modernista" decor and columns. Don't miss the tour here.
Wonderful local market with every food you could ever want to buy. But the restaurant inside is expensiive - avoid it. Instead, buy food from the individulal stalls or go to a particular family restaurant 20 meters away.
About the owner: I fell in love with BCN a long time ago and intend to retire to the apartment. I love being able to leave my apartment, and step back into medieval Barcelona. I love living on carbon-monoxide free streets and have my morning coffee in an open air medieval square.
Why the Owner Chose Ciutat Vella: I choose this street because it is VERY safe. I was waiting for 2 years for a 3 bedroom apartment to come on the market on this street. It had to be very safe as I will retire there next year! Like it or not, security is a very important consideration for travellers in BCN. NeitherI I nor any of my tenants or friends who have stayed there have ever had the slightest problem in or around the street. I suppose being located just behind the police station helps! I also bought this apartment because I love the street, the restaurants in the area. and the proximity to Plaza Catalunya, the Cathedral and the Palau de la Musica (Music Palace).. But the key was feeling safe at any time day or night. In 2 years I will retire to this apartment.. So rent it while you can!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment: From this apartment you can go to the beach in the morning, be back to the apartment by 11 AM, shower, stroll through the Gothic Quarter and be in the Picasso Museum by 11:40. Spend 2 hours there, have a glass of wine outside Santa Maria del Mar, have lunch nearby in one of the restaurants I recommend and be back to the apartment for s rest by 4:15. After a rest, go shopping in Plaza Catalunya or explore more of the Gothic Quarter. The go to a wine-tasting session or an art gallery opening (I'll tell you about them - more wine!). Have dinner and then go to a concert at the Palau or an opera at the Liceu. Hava drink after the concert. If you still have energy, I'll tell you where to go dancing (tango or disco) or to just listen to some jazz! And all within walking distance of the apartment. Or reverse the order and go for a later swim and have lunch on the beach. The beach is five minutes away.Walking in the Gothic Quarter is a delight. You step back into medieval Barcelona. If you wish, spend an afternoon in the mountains just outside the city limits.
