La vue est incroyable!!! Il y a 1 matelas gonflable double et un futon en plus des 2 chambres, très pratique. À 30 minutes de La Fortuna, ou on trouve de tous.

Overall, a very good experience. The owner was always friendly and has been very flexible with our requests. The house was great, very clean and well maintained, with two beautiful rooms and bathrooms. The kitchen was nicely equiped. The swimming pool is not big but you really have a stunning view from it, as well as from the entire house. But this wonderful view and environment can also be a drawback for some people and this is the only reason why we are rating this house 4/5 instead of 5/5. The house is located far away from the first city (la fortuna). We were in the house with our parents, and this was kind of an issue. Local shops and restaurants are ok for one or two days but not for a week, and not (always) for persons coming from a main european city. Besides the distance and duration (40min), the road is difficult in the last 20min and can even be very uncomfortable during the last 5min (a 4x4 is a must have !). However, we enjoyed our stay tremendously and would recommend this house.

This beautiful home is located in el Castillo, which is about a 30 min drive from the nearest town, la fortuna. It had a beautiful view, modern house, fully furnished, lots of space, kitchen is fully stocked even with spices and coffee. The pool is really pretty. There is a little outdoor sheltered area that is amazing for breakfast as well as an beautifully thought out panoramic viewing room on the second floor. We were very comfortable for our 3 nights and didn't have problems with any Mosquitos or other bug bites! Be warned though that the location is very remote. We arrived in the evening and had to drive on a very bumpy road at nighttime for about 20 minutes. You really can't go much faster than 20 miles/hour on it. There are a few restaurants in the area but I'd recommend this place if you want some time alone and feel like preparing a few meals of your own. Would be great for 2 couples or a family. We loved arenal, be sure to do the cerro chato hike!

Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. We're so glad you had a great time. We fell in love with the community and the views on our first visit and building the home here has been a labor of love. The photos were taken before we enclosed the second floor to create a panoramic sunroom which gives the home much more useable space without detracting from it's best attribute-the views. This is now our favorite room. As you know, we strongly recommend that all our guests rent a 4x4 for travel within Costa Rica as roads are steep and rough once you leave the main highways and it's only when you leave the highways that you get to experience the authentic "Tico" lifestyle. Once again, thank you and we hope you come back to Costa Rica soon!

There isn't enough space in this review to share with everyone the experiences we shared while staying at this amazing location! First, Joe is the best owner we have rented from. He is very timely in his responses and does a fantastic job getting you to his location and providing you a ton to do if you opt to venture out. The home is stunning. The drive to alone is an adventure! The views are simply breathtaking. The home is equipped with EVERYTHING you will need to make your stay comfortable. The village is so welcoming! We were invited to both a Xmas Eve and Xmas day dinner by locals we met as we ventured out! Our caretakers were incredibility helpful. Make sure you have a lunch with them, their food is incredible! The quality of their companionship will go unmatched. If you desire to get away from the masses and to avoid tourist traps, this is the place to come. There certainly plenty of those placed to visit however, if you are into sustainable living, local feel, and adventure, this is the place to come. I would highly suggest taking the hike up the volcano, go horse bike riding, sit in the hot springs, and most importantly RELAX at their home. Thank you Joe for making your home available for others to use! We have used homeaway several times and this was by far our best experience!

The pictures don't do the views justice and they are why I chose this house. It's definitely off the beaten (paved) path. Do not try to find this house when it's getting dark and raining! We had not been give the updated contact and found Pizza Johns place closed and for sale! After the long, winding, crazy drive from San Jose all we wanted to do was get to the house and relax. Once we finally arrived it was more than we could ask. Nice clean house, beautifully landscaped gardens and outstanding views of the Volcan Arenal, Arenal Lake and the countryside. Definatley need a 4x4 vehicle to reach this lofty palace. Everything you could need was in the house. We were a bit concerned that it did not have A/C, but the cool breezes at night were refreshing, especially after enjoying a dip in the pool. I definately recommend trying to get up early enough to see the sunrise over he volcano, these are my best photos of the entire trip!

The property is a little out of the way but well worth the drive. We were stunned at the beautiful house, beautiful views. We had everything we could ever need in the house it was fully equipped with every imaginable thing we could possibly need (even leftover food in cupboards). We really enjoyed havng coffee out in the balcony every morning enjoying the breathtaking views of the volcano & lake. In the evenings we enjoyed our glass of wine out in the gazebo. Only draw back the road to get there is rough & far from civilization but for the views it's worth it!! Will definitely recommend staying there.

This was by far the most spectacular point of our trip in Costa Rica. Waking up to see the volcano was awe-inspiring. Spectacular setting and your house is perfect-warm and inviting. Pizza John did not let us down with great pizza and great stories. We enjoyed meeting Hannah and bought some art, including a painted snake by 11-year old Freddie. Your oneness with the local community is admirable. Keep doing what you are doing!

Wonderful! We stayed at El Castillo in March 2013 & loved every bit of it! The property has everything you need. All updated & not just nice, but very nice with so many little touches that put it over the top. The views are amazing! The wildlife in the trees is just what you want when you go to a tropical paradise. It is a bit off the beaten path, which was perfect for us. Yes the roads are a bit rough, but if you’re driving through the Arenal area you should already be prepared for that. We met Pizza John at his restaurant which was a nice respite after a long drive. He led us to the property & we enjoyed his company so much that we asked him to stay for a drink. The owners knew we were coming from our Costa Rican wedding & had a bottle of champagne waiting for us – another very nice touch. We took advantage of the local convenience store & restaurant & had everything we needed. We had no problems getting to & from the property, just be aware that you need a bit more time, but it’s worth it to have your own oasis. Pizza John arranged a horseback ride with the local guy (meaning the guy down the street, a true local) who met us at the house in the morning with horses. Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time here. We would absolutely recommend this property!

We have hiked the forest, spent all morning riding with Lelander, laughed and enjoyed pizza with John and spoiled ourselves with the pools and spa at Tabacon. Had to leave El Castillo but off to explore more of this stunning country! Thank you!!

The forced relaxation (due to wanting to avoid the roads) was much needed. We swam and hiked. The views cannot be described in words or done justice in pictures. We enjoyed wonderful views at sunrise, the hawks and the frogs after dark. Pizza John was really great and he really can cook! You have a real slice of paradise here!

The kids loved the pool and the frogs that swam in the pool after dark. We hope this part of the world will always stay this quiet for busy people to enjoy.

This place can only be highly recommended to any traveler. The views are splendous, you can see the lake and the volcano and much more and the place is most accomodating. I wish we could have stayed longer! (Pizza) John, your local host, was of great help in finding great trips and was also a fun conversation partner over a beer. We tried to challenge him with non-functioning internet and lost keys but he always remaind cool, relaxed and helpfull! When you decide to come, bring a 4x4 else you might not make it to the place.

We loved the fantastic view of the countryside, lake and Arenal and even got to see the top of the volcano one morning. Pizza John and Taco were a real treat to know. Sky Adventures was some of the best zip-lining my family has done. Unfortunately, we're leaving today so we don't have time to experience the many other things Castillo has to offer. Perhaps that means a return trip in our future??? We're gonna miss the cows!

We have rented quite a few places over the years, in various countries but El Castillo en las Nubes is a very, very special place. The access road is not a highway so a 4WD is recommended, but when you arrive you are rewarded with a stunning view of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. Then you discover a wonderful little house, very comfortable, built with outstanding good taste, beautiful material and very well equipped with all possible amenities. We spent one week here and enjoyed it very much. We had all kinds of weather-rainy and sunny, always rather windy. We visited all the tourist areas, but with a good book this is also a wonderful place to just relax. Pizza John took very good care of us, calling almost every day to check how we were doing and ask what he could do to help us.

We all loved Pizza John, our neighbours Lelander and Rafael, the delicious baking of Tomas and Hannah and her amazing art. So many wonderful things-too numerous to mention. The river cruise was the absolute best- caymans, lizards, frogs and monkeys everywhere. The Butterfly Conservatory was great and we ate lunch at the Snake Museum- delicious fajitas! I can't say enough-thanks again for an amazing holdiay!

We arrived in El Castillo after a long day of traveling not knowing what to expect, so it was a pleasure to find the home clean, comfortable, and architecturally interesting. Our amazing host , Pizza John, was very pleasant and knowledgeable and able to match our families' interests to an array of activities in the area. The following morning we woke up to incredible panoramic views including Volcano Arenal and Lake Arenal as well as a pot of delicious Costa Rican coffee. Whether hiking or horseback riding right from the property to soaking in hot springs, hiking through the cloud forest or riding a zip line, there was always plenty to do. We wrapped up our stay with a visit to Jardin Escondido, Pizza John's restaurant, for delicious homemade pizza and ice cream. Our only complaint was that we didn't have more time to enjoy!

We had a great time staying in this home. It is beautifully decorated. I would say the pictures don't do it justice. We stayed there comfortably with a family of 5. One person had to sleep on the sofabed but that was fine. People do need a 4 x 4 in order to reach the house but once you are there the view is stunning! There is so much to do in the vicinity, hiking, horseback riding, ziplining...

andreas from Remseck, Germany We four adults spent five wonderful days in this magnificent house high above Laguna Arenal. Each day began with a jump into the refreshing water of the pool from where we had the same beautiful view on Mount Arenal and its gentle slope down to the lake as from each other room and especially from the spacious balcony upstairs where we enjoyed our extended breakfast and evening meal. We were also impressed by the convincingly clear architectural design of the exterior and the interior - my wife just loved the staircase. We admired the exquisite materials used for the tiles on the floors, the wooden ceilings upstairs with their fine pattern and felt at home with the clearly styled furniture; we really fell in love with this house. Needless to say that everything we needed to make our stay comfortable was provided for. Pizza John, who looks after the house, is a reliable and very friendly help; in his unconventional pizza joint down in the village he serves delicious pizzas. The wider area offers a rich choice of exiting places and activities, but we also went right from the house. on interesting walks into the rain forest with its exotic plants and morpho-butterflies. To sum up our experience: El Castillo en las Nubes is the perfect holiday accommodation.

We had the honor of being the first renters of this beautiful new home in El Castillo. We arrived in the evening and had no idea what was in store for us when we woke up in the morning. We were greeted with a breahtaking view of the lake and volcano from every room of the house. Absolutely picturesque. The house has all the amenities you could possibly need and within several minutes drive of a plethora of area attractions. Pizza John is the local pizza guy (make sure to eat there at least once. it is amazing!) and got us settled in on behalf of the owner. He also had a lot of great suggestions on sodas (definitely go to La Mesa de Mama at the bottom of the hill for the typical breakfast.) and areas of Arenal not to miss. If you want a lasting memory of Costa Rica, this is definitely the place to stay. You will not be disappointed.

As you exit the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica the sign reads "Welcome to the Happiest Place on Earth". Truer words have never been spoken! Costa Rica is a tropical paradise; with beaches lining the coast and Volcano Arenal in the centre. El Castillo was a magical gem in the middle of a tropical rainforest. Minutes from zip lining, volcanic hot springs and horse back riding tours (among other activities) you couldn't ask for a better location. This house is a modern dwelling, with all of your modern conveniences, in the middle of the rainforest. We had the time of our lives and will definitely be going back to visit this wonderful, peaceful, beautiful country very soon. Costa Rica is definitely going to be a tourist hotspot in the near future. The house comes highly recommended. Enjoy!!!

One thing is certain after our vacation to Costa Rica- we will return. The country is beautiful, friendly, and safe. What truly made our trip was returning to our luxurious "Castle In The Clouds" at the end of each adventure filled day. Whether we were hiking up a volcano, zip lining over the rain forrest, or simply relaxing in hot springs, having our house at the top of the hill was something to look forward to every night. With every possible amenity and a view to die for, waking up and looking down the valley at the lake and volcano with a fresh cup of coffee each morning was a joy. Located on Lake Arenal, a myriad of sights and activities are conveniently located nearby. The weather was perfect with a light rain falling every morning from about 6-6:30 and clear skies the rest of the day. The sleepy town of El Castillo is quiet and welcoming. The perfect place to get away and relax.

Have you ever wondered what Tevye the Milkman might have felt like, had he not been stuck in the impoverished Anatevka during politically troubled times? Having stayed near the heaven for a week (and not only because it's high in the mountains), I believe I have found the answer. What I am about to describe is actually more Wizard of Oz than Fiddler on the Roof material, however since the property is as wonderfully contradictory as a great work of art, I see no reason why this note shouldn't be. El Costillo en las Nubes is simply that definitive paradise - not only breathtaking, but unique. Where else would you find the beautiful brand new house with every modern ammenity and an attention to detail that a great artist would envy (how many properties you stayed at have a shampoo-soap-conditioner dispenser in every shower)? This of course is no reason to travel to this property, but it gives you an idea into the thought and care of someone actually wanting to share this idellic destination with you. You look outside as you awaken in the morning and see a picture perfect scenery, weather notwithstanding. And then you marvel at the organic and unpretensious small town life beneath you. You simply don't know where you are - it's very warm every day, but not unbareably hot. Anyone preferring an European/learning adventure holiday over a tropical retreat will be excited to discover this happy medium. If you find the regular all-inclusive resort on a beach a bore (which is not to say that there isn't a gorgeous, scene stealing beach a few hours drive away) and are looking for both an adventure and a peace of mind - then this property should be on you must visit list. The bottom line? You will not only want to visit this house as part of your immediate travel plans, but you will be left wondering why on earth you don't have something like this of your own.
