All the previous reviews are true to form. Al and Sandra are amazing! As promised they pick you up from the airport and bring you right to an extremely nice, well stocked grocery store. They provide a brief background about Sandy Bay and the island on your short drive to the house. From there on they are always available with helpful tips. For example they tell you how much taxis should cost, where to snorkel, what days are good to go to West Bay (to avoid swarms of cruise shippers) and so much more it is impossible to write out. The house shown on the website is exactly what you are walking into. When we arrived it was spotless (we are clean freaks) and there were plenty of fresh/clean towels and linens. The kitchen is completely stocked with cookware, plateware, utensils as well as condiments, spices and cleaning items. We fell in love with Roatan primarily because of this awesome spot. Some of the things we loved to do were playing cards on the back deck, laying out on the beach in front of the house, snorkeling at both Sandy Bay and West Bay, going out for food and drinks in West End. This guest house truly offered a place to completely veg out. But in truth it was Al and Sandra who made our trip muy terificano!!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

For this being our first time visiting Roatan, we couldn't ask for better hospitality! Sandra and Al made us feel so comfortable right away from picking us up from the airport, taking us to the local grocery market to inviting us to lunch and telling us some great stories about the island! They gave us so much knowledge about this beautiful paradise that it didn't take us long to venture out and discover the amazing beauty and culture of this place they call home! Their guest home is adorable and located right next door to their place which is located right on the beach! Everything in their description is exactly what you will expect! Would love to return and stay right here again!! Thanks Sandra and Al!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

We had a really great & relaxing time here. Sandra & Al couldnt have been more welcoming. From taking us to the grocery store, to sharing local recipes and spices, they really added to the experience of Roatan. Pictures of the house certainly dont do it justice. It has all the amenities we could have needed, is very clean, quite adorably decorated & has a wonderful ocean cross breeze running through. We spent alot of time relaxing on the screen porch which overlooks the white sand beach & ocean. The sunset views are truly amazing. The dogs are very friendly to guests & made us feel very safe at all times. We kayaked to the reef for snorkeling & also dove w/ neighbor Junior in Spooky Channel & other nearby areas. The diving is spectacular & Junior is a safe & knowledgable Dive Master. Bring your underwater camera for some fantastic shots of the diverse abundance of sea life! Roatan has some amazing things to do! The house is just a short ride from some spectacular restaurants and swimming with the dolphins(we highly recommend)!! We would most highly recommend this rental for your vacation stay on Roatan!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks for our honeymoon and we enjoyed every minute. Sandra picked us up at the airport and took us grocery shopping which was very helpful to start our week off. She also took us a second time when she had to go get groceries too. Her and her husband, Al were very friendly and were available to answer any questions but also let us have our privacy. One night they made a fire on the beach and sat with us for a few drinks. It was really nice and great to hear then explain the history of the island. The house was exactly what we wanted and more. The listing description and pictures were completely accurate and when we got there we were very pleased with the house. It was very clean, had everything in the kitchen that we needed, tons of DVDs to watch on the flat screen tv etc. We wanted a house that was not in the really touristy areas but close enough that it wasn't hard to get to. This was PERFECT for that. It was secluded enough that we could have relaxing days on the beach, snorkeling out front or kayaking and if we wanted to go to West End it was only a 10 minute taxi ride at the most. It was great. We would definitely recommend this to anyone who doesn't want the typical resort vacation, but someone who wants to see more of the island and experience the culture. We had a fabulous time and would definitely consider coming back in the future.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

I have been using VRBO for awhile now to find cozy, atmospheric, and authentic homes in the Caribbean for scuba trips. I couldn't have been happier with this place. I was looking for an inexpensive place next to the sea that would accommodate two people (in separate beds)--and that would have some character. The house has a double bed downstairs and a loft upstairs. The owners live just at a distance in their own house and were on hand for all our questions. They even brought over an extra bed just in case the loft bed was too hot, according to the season. Really nice folks. They picked us up from the airport, took us to the market, changed money for us, recommended dive shops, and so on. It was great to have a kayak right there for us to take out--and right over the Spooky Channel, which is a great diving (and snorkeling) spot. I also liked the screen porch for enjoying a relaxing meal. The flatscreen TV was great for watching DVDs, and the owners actually had quite a library on hand to enjoy. The west end is only 10 minutes away by taxi, and the cabs pass by almost constantly. Coconut Tree Divers was their recommended shop, and it turned out to be a really fun (and affordable) company. There are many other attractions close by as well, such as the dolphin experience and a nice botanical gardens area. There is a wonderfully authentic (and cheap) island restaurant called Marilyn's as well, which our hosts recommended. All told, we had a perfect first trip to the Bay Islands, and it might not have been so without the ideal aspects of this rental and the warmth of its owners. Highly recommended!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed two weeks and had a wonderful time.Al and Sandy were wonderful hosts .Al picked us up at the airport and took us by the grocery store.Later that evening we went with them to eat at the Lighthouse. They were very helpful, they recommended Murphy for our east side island tour. Also they recommended Sparky for our sailing and snorkeling they even came along .We rode mountain bikes and kayaked. We shopped at West End and snorkeled at West Bay it only took five minutes to reach the reef it was so close. Al even loaned me a guitar to play while I was there. We would definitely recommend this property to a friend or realitive.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The beach house is exactly as described and very clean. Sandra was very helpful and will make sure that this place is a good fit for you before booking. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. There is pretty good snorkeling right in front of the house, had a close encounter with an eagle ray. Lots of wildlife under the water out there, even hooked a few bonefish with a fly right out front one evening. There are a few restaurants within walking distance; otherwise everything in West End is a $3 taxi ride away. Sandy Bay is very quiet and is mostly populated with retired expats, the resorts that are on that section of beach are small.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I searched nearly every rental house on Roatan before choosing this Sandy Bay location. It had everything we were looking for including close proximity to the airport, grocery stores, dive shops, good snorkeling, AND they had a kayak and bikes for our use. Sandy and Al are the most gracious and accommodating owners, are there if you need assistance, but give you your privacy the rest of the time. The house had everything we needed, and we instantly felt at home. It is in a very private area, but within a 10 minute drive to West End (dive shops and restaurants), or a bit further to West Bay. We took their kayak out to the reef daily, and spent hours snorkeling, seeing things we definitely didn't see diving! We even snorkeled through Spooky Channel (directly in front of the house) to the outside of the reef wall, which was quite incredible! We couldn't have chosen a more perfect location for our 12 day vacation, and would definitely recommend this property.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We just came back from a 2 week vacation at the little house on the beach and I can tell you that we will be back. It's perfect unless you are looking for a resort experience. I stopped that a long time ago and as resorts are overpriced, Sandra and Al are great people and always were trying to make the stay better. Al even got his mountain bike out so I could ride down the beach and into West End. Biking is not for the faint of heart, but it sure was fun. Diving was exceptional and a good value. We liked it so much we looked at property and we will retire there in a few years.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I spent a glorious 12 days here and couldn’t have been happier. This was our first visit to Roatan, and we looked long and hard for a place that offered a beautiful view and a bit of peace and quiet but was not too far from towns and restaurants. Located between Coxen Hole and West End, this Sandy Bay cottage was perfect. We loved watching the dive and fishing boats tie up at Spooky Channel, and the waves crashing on the reef out front were mesmerizing. On the days we ventured off the front porch or the beach, we walked a short way to the road and caught a taxi – never had to wait over 5 minutes. Owners Al and Sandra couldn’t have been more helpful with tips on dining and exploring the island, and even gave us some lifts to town. We especially fell in love with Zoe, one of their dogs, who sometimes spent the night on our deck. The only complaint we had was that our stay wasn’t long enough, but we hope to take care of that next year. Thanks again, Al and Sandra!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: Al and I (Sandra) have been married 24 years. We recently retired from hectic careers in Western US and Canada. We love animals and are coordinators for a yearly pet clinic.
Why the Owner Chose Sandy Bay:
We have been certified divers since 1993. We knew we wanted to live in the Caribbean and fell in love with Roatan in 1997. We found our dream property with an old island home on the beach in 2001. It is just our house and the guest house on our 2 1/2 acres from road to beach. No need to walk through other neighborhoods.
We recently decided to rent our guest house that was built in 2007, but finished/upgraded in 2011.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The beach is right out your front door. You can quietly relax in a hammock or lounge chairs on our private part of the beach. There is no local access through this property and rarely motor vehicles on the beach here. Snorkel or take the kayak out about 150 yards to Spooky Channel. Anthony's Key and Roatan Institute of Marine Science is just 1/4 mile away.
