All the comforts of home away from home. Even a bottle of wine in the fridge awaiting our arrival. Very comfortable bed and clean. My husband and I totally enjoyed the cottage, returning each evening after sightseeing in San Francisco. Definitely recommend the cottage and driving north to Muir Woods and Stinson Beach - beautiful views! San Francisco was still very near - yet Sausalito was a great place to retreat and relax afterwards.

The Red Cottage was adequate to meet our needs as "home base" while exploring SF and the surrounding areas. It is a small house with 3 small rooms and a porch. Reading prior reviews prior to booking, I was under the impression that it would be "above and beyond", but it simply was not. I was a little disappointed that the bear claw tub was not clean upon our arrival. It had dirt and leaves covering the bottom of it, which was somewhat understandable since it is outside, but somewhat disappointing that no effort was made to clean it or put a cover on it for us. The neighbors back porch is also in full view of the tub for those who are modest. House was clean and neat. Bed was extremely comfortable and probably the highlight of the house. Kitchen was adequate for our needs. Yard was complete with beautiful flowers that made it feel very much like "home". The house manager kept an apparent list of every item in home and informed me after our departure some knives and a plastic utensil holder were missing. I am not sure if they are going to try and charge me for the mystery items, but other than that we had no problems with management. Sausalito is a quaint town with beautiful views and many charming restaurants and shops. Two amazing coffee shops in walking distance. Ferry is convenient to get to downtown SF, where there is much to explore. We will most definitely return to Sausalito, but will most likely stay somewhere else.

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car.

Owner response: We are very sorry that the Red Cottage was not "above and beyond" for you. We have been renting the Cottage for years and you are the first to voice a complaint. As to the condition of the claw foot tub; our apologies. When we installed the tub on the redwood deck next to the bamboo our thinking was that the bamboo would give a pleasant backdrop. It has worked well. The problem is that we clean the tub and the Cottage in the morning and at times the wind does come up in the afternoon and places dry leaves from the bamboo in the tub and on the deck. We will blame that one on Mother Nature. As to the missing items: no we will not be charging you. From time to time guests have inadvertently packed away some bits from the Cottage. We contact them, like we did you, to ask if that were the case. The items have been replaced at a very small cost. We are glad you enjoyed your stay in Sausalito and hope that you reconsider and stay with us again. We will do our best to make your visit special.

I live in Marin. I work in the City. I pass Sausalito regularly but had never stayed there. I spent a delightful two weeks with my girlfriend in this simple yet comfortable cottage. There is a sign on the kitchen wall that says Simplify. We followed the guidelines. We walked around the corner for coffee at Divino's, ambled down to Wellingtons Wine bar for some cheese and wine on a Saturday afternoon, sat out at Murray Circle and watched the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset on New Year's Eve, walked along the water front....ate at Sushi Ran.... enjoyed a hot bath under the bamboo, sat by the fire, caught a movie around the corner, talked, sang and simply enjoyed each others company. It was a magical break from the realities of life.Who would have guessed it was right around the corner? Thank You Patty and David: the perfect romantic getaway.

Our week in the red cottage was spectacular. It inspired romance and allure that we both had been needing. The cottage was located within walking distance to excellent restaurants, fantastic shopping, and awe-inspiring sightseeing. Hope to return there many, many times.

Cottage is clean, nicely decorated, simple, cozy, perfect for two people! Location, location, location! Close to all Sausalito has to offer - walking distance to everything. Ferry to SF makes it easy to get to city. We had a car and enjoyed wine country, Muir Woods and Pt. Reyes Light House to name a few. Our first sushi at Sushi Ran. So much to see and do - will have to go back for sure! Kudos to the owner and manager for making this a great destination and for thinking of everything needed to make our stay perfect! It felt like home :)

Very clean and quiet why stay in the city? Plenty of room do not let the pictures fool you. Insiders tip go to the bakery/coffee shop by the police station after 7pm for 2 for 1 deals.

Wonderful cottage, immaculate, fully stocked, comfortable bed with soft pillows, and fluffy towels! This is a real jewel in Sausalito - close to great restaurants, shopping and the ferry. The back deck area is perfect for morning coffee or evening glass of wine. Although close to all the ammenities, the cottage is very quiet and feels secluded. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to get away and just enjoy what the Bay area has to offer. We will definitely be back.

The Red Cottage is the perfect spot to come back to after a busy day of hiking and sightseeing in the beautiful Bay area. The location in Sausalito is superb; within easy walking distance to the waterfront, the farmers market on Sundays, many great restaurants, shops and the ferry terminal for day trips to San Francisco. Easy freeway access to points north for trips to the seashore or to the wine country. Patty is very kind and helpful, and the cottage is clean, cozy and well-appointed. For less than the price of week in an area hotel room, the Red Cottage was a great choice! We will be back.

Cottage was immaculate, great location,(we actually walked from the cottage, over the Golden Gate to Pier 23 on the Embarcadero- quite a hike for 2 60somethings!) Patty was a pleasure to meet and helpful with Sonoma info and the Birthday Chardonnay was delicious, thoughtful and much appreciated the evening of our marathon walk! We hope to be back.

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 1976

About the owner: Dave purchased the Red Cottage (and it has always been painted red) in 1976 as a rental home. The reason I bought the Cottage is that it is well located just off Caledonia Street which is the commercial street in 'New Town.' We are within easy walking distance of just about everything we need. And we are the closest home to Sushi Ran, the best in Marin. The Red Cottage has been my home from time to time between my sailing trips to Mexico, Caribbean. and the South Pacific. I now have 'swallowed the anchor' and live in Hawaii where I grow fruit, veggies, orchids, and hardwood trees. Patty lives in Sausalito a few minutes from the Red Cottage and manages the property.
