Relaxing, private getaway location on the Big Isln
Relaxing, private getaway location on the Big Isln
Hale Lazarde is a perfect location for people who like to create their own adventures. The house is set back from the road in a quiet neighborhood...close enough to Pahoa for local restaurants and grocery shopping and close to several sightseeing spots on the rainforest side of the island. We enjoyed the open floor plan of the house for our time there...cooking, eating, enjoying views of the lovely grounds. WiFi access was super. The property is a good value for couples, as well as families looking for a bit more space and privacy.

Quiet Retreat Close to the Action
I joined family who had been at Hale Lezarde for several weeks towards the end of their trip. They were settled into the main house and I took over the ohana. The ohana was fantastic. It is a separate guest house, the size of a large studio apartment and had everything I needed to be comfortable. The bed was a dream and you could quite comfortably sleep up to 5 people. The entire place was very clean. There are many windows and a sliding door you can leave open to let sunlight and fresh air in. The wireless internet worked great, even in the ohana. I had cell reception the entire time, although other members of the party had some issues, but that depends on your carrier. The main house is very open and airy with the living room, kitchen, and dining area all adjoining. We cooked Thanksgiving dinner for 9 adults, and it was very comfortable for all of us to socialize between the living room, breakfast bar, kitchen table, and lanai. The kitchen is well appointed and had everything we needed to cater to ourselves and our guests. The couches in the living room were perfect for lounging on while we watched the football games on tv. The yard is a tropical dream. The house and ohana are set back from the road with a pleasant (flat) winding driveway. There is a car port with a covered path into the house, for which we were thankful, as the lush green surroundings are due in large part to the amount of rain this part of the island receives mostly in the night and morning. There is a flat gravel area to the side of the driveway with additional parking. There is a maintained lawn as well as many flowers, trees, and plants growing around. When we were there, we had oranges from the yard and they were quite tasty. Hale Lezarde is far enough away from the main road, neighbors, and any cities to be peaceful and undisturbed during all hours of the day and night, yet it is only a short drive to any number of activities. The shoreline at Kalapana is a quick 10-15 minute drive. We went to the Kapoho tide pools, a beautiful collection of pristine tide pools with such a variety of fish and corals that to miss them would be a crime. It's also less than 10 minutes drive to Pahoa, which has restaurants, groceries and shopping. We drove to Hilo for dinner, to Volcano National Park, and made the trip up Mauna Kea to the observatories. My vacation to Hale Lezarde was the best decision I've made in a long time and I will definitely bring friends and family back here.

Surprising Value for Such a Great Place
I had to really decide if I wanted to post a great review of this place because I would love to keep it our own secret...but that hardly seems fair; so here goes... :) A group of us stayed at Hale Lezarde for 10 days in October and had an awesome time! The place was super clean and comfortable. It seems like the owners have thought of everything to make your stay the best it can be. The tour book, the suggestions for places to go and things to do were all appreciated by all of us. We also liked the fact that there was a separate, private area that those of us who wanted to stay up late and visit could do just that. The beds and linens were clean and new, as were all the dishes and kitchen supplies. I can't tell you how great it was to find a place that was affordable and perfect all rolled into one. We had a blast spending the money we saved!! We will be back next year, if not sooner.

About the owner: Mark (also known as 'The Bear') and Sandy (also known as 'The Lizard' or 'Mme. Lezarde') have been vacationing in the Puna District of the Big Island since 2007, and have come to love it as a second home. Mark and Sandy are the founders of Lezarde Travel, LLC, a Hawaii Company, specializing in adventure and romance travel experiences for those seeking to see the world and live in it the way you always imagined it could be. Currently, Lezarde Travel, LLC is arranging select trips according to our interests, and we are open to arranging unique experiences for those clients willing to work with us in our early days. Lezarde Travel, LLC is also proud to offer rental accommodations at Hale Lezarde, our vacation home on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Come, be part of the Story. Sandra L Davis is a licensed real estate broker in the State of Missouri.
Why the Owner Chose Pahoa:
After bringing a group of friends to the Big Island in May 2012 for the Transit of Venus, we found we had an extra week to ourselves and Mark suggested that we look at lots with a plan to build 'some day'. But when we found Hale Lezarde, we knew we had found our dream home in paradise! Hale Lezarde has all the features that we were looking for in a vacation home: The peace and tranquility of a secluded and private one acre lot, a home with Ohana providing plenty of room for family and friends, and the location in the Puna District of the Big Island with it's unique natural beauty and energy.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We have traveled the world extensively and have never found a place more beautiful or more relaxing than the Puna District of Hawai'i. The swimming and snorkeling are amazing and the water is always warm! We love the weekly markets looking for bargains and especially the Wednesday Night Market at Uncle Robert's in Kalapana, where the party is always jumping and you always feel like family. Kaleo's in Pahoa Town has become our favorite restaurant and we celebrated Thanksgiving there in 2012! We hope you will be our guests at Hale Lezarde and experience the beauty of the rain forest and the serenity of being on Island Time!
