The positives: The renting process was smooth and the owner was quick to answer any questions I had. The home is in a great location and the home overall was clean and lovely with a fantastic view. The beds are comfortable and there is plenty of space to accommodate several people The exceptions: While the old world charm of the house was appreciated the 'old world' amenities were not. The home is need of some updates that I think are essential for a rental property and for the price point of this particular rental. The appliances are old and well "mostly worked". The washer only washed on hot and there were several tricks to keep it running. The coffee pot leaked, which the owner did agree to replace when told after we left. Most of pots and pans were rusty and in my opinion not suitable to cook with. The TV in the living room was basic local channels only, the signal was sketchy and the TV in the bedroom did not work at all. Despite these issues, I still give the rental 4 stars b/c my husband and I had a great vacation and made due with what was provided with a few trips to Target to fill in the gaps (i.e. coffee pot and washcloths).Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you for alerting us to the problem with the coffee maker and the pans. We have never had issues with them before so that is good to know. We have replaced the coffee maker with a new one, and will be replacing any old pans with newer ones. We're pleased you found the location lovely, with a fantastic view and comfortable beds. We haven't heard complaints about the TV or reception from previous guests, so we'll keep tabs on what other renters think. We've had only positive reviews so far, and look forward to welcoming future guests.

My husband, his twelve-year-old son, and I rented the house for a month during the summer. The house was a great place to get away from it all and was just what we were looking for. Sitting on a hill top, the property is cooler than the nearest town, which is about a five to ten minute drive. There are some beautiful lakes and ponds for fishing, hiking, and swimming. The house itself was very well maintained - it was very clean, well-stocked with kitchen items, games, pool toys, and it was beautifully furnished as well. The pool was super clean, and the owners sent someone once a week to maintain the pool as well as the lawns and gardens. The house is a great place to unwind, swim, and cook -- if you don’t mind driving a little out of the way, there are some lovely gourmet markets in the Bantam / Litchfield area as well. There were no unpleasant surprises here -- everything was as advertised or better, and we would recommend the house to anyone looking for a beautiful quiet place to spend some time away.Recommended for: Families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

Just wanted to thank you so much for the fantastic weekend! We got together with family and friends over Memorial Day Weekend and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. What a gorgeous house, and a lovely location! We especially appreciated that the house was not only comfortable and beautiful, but also that you provided so much to make it functional. We also enjoyed watching our neighbor the turkey strutting and sunning himself in the yard. We had dinner on the porch in back, watching the clouds roll by, and went to sleep to the sound of frogs chirping by the pool. Had a beautiful walk at the White Memorial reservation in Litchfield, and a vigorous hike outside of Kent. This area is perfect for a weekend or a longer visit - can't wait to come back!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, girls getaway.

the house is gorgeous and spacious and the kids had lots of room to run around. We loved the pool and we felt very far from civilization. I could have spent another week sitting out on the deck taking in the view. Was exactly what we wanted and needed to celebrate a special birthday.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, age 55+, girls getaway.

What a wonderful house -- it's exactly as stated -- if not better. The house was a perfect base for our girls' getaway weekend. The house was immaculate and very comfortable. There was plenty of room for all six of us! The owners were lovely and easy to work with. I would highly recommend it!Recommended for: Families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1989
About the owner: My sister, brother and I own the house, and we have been coming here for weekends and extended stays for years. Among the three of us, we work in education, music, public health and finance.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love how close the house is to NYC, and that when we arrive we can look out over farms and forested hills. We swim, hang out on the lawn, play board games with our nieces and nephews on the porch, go swimming in the nearby lake, and barbeque and cook big meals for our friends and families.
