Harlem refers to the Upper Manhattan area south of 155th street and north of well, depending on what side of the island you ask, 110th street on the west and 96th street on the east. Where you are currently, this is Central Harlem, or Sugar Hill, home of the Harlem Renaissance & home to famous NYers such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, J.D. Salinger, Al Pacino, Tupac Shakur & Alicia Keyes.

With such a rich history in the arts and music, its no wonder you'd be able to visit places like The Apollo Theater (253 West 125th St) the Savoy Ballroom plaque (596 Lenox Ave), the iconic Lenox Lounge (333 Lenox Ave) and The National Jazz Museum (104 E 126th St). Harlem One Stop is a great reference where you can find information on performances, on going exhibits and even private tours of various places of interest in Harlem.

For the artist, Harlem offers a multitude of galleries. 449 LA aka SCAT (449 Lenox Ave), Arts Horizons (2785 Frederick Douglass Blvd) & Harlem Wine Gallery (752 St Nicholas Ave) can all help you get your art fix. Bonus: a lot of them also have live music and some serve drinks. Looking for just the music? Catch evening sets at Bill's Place: 148 W 133rd St, Showman's: 375 W 125th St, or a personal favorite, Shrine: 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd, or weekend brunches at Marjorie Eliot's Parlour: 555 Edgecomb Ave-- former home of Duke Ellington! or the Smoke Jazz Club: 2751 Broadway. Just make sure you call ahead to find out if reservations are necessary. Can't decide where to go? Big Apple Jazz Tours can help guide your way.

Is architecture and history more your thing? Harlem is home to over 60 New York City Landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 60. In a matter of 50 blocks. And I'm not talking about the birthplace of the Chicken Noodle Soup Dance. A quick lookup on Wiki can give you a list of some architectural gems, but here are a few suggestions:

-Anything in upper Central Park, like the Blockhouse, one of the oldest structures in the city, or upper Riverside Park, like the Little Red Lighthouse. And while you're there, you have to check out highlights within the parks themselves, but more on that later.

-The Cathedral of St John the Divine (1047 Amsterdam Ave). Absolutely beautiful. The back gardens are just as pretty and open until sunset.

-The Morris-Jumel Mansion (65 Jumel Terrace) Oh never heard of it? Go. If you're remotely a history buff, you'll be as happy as Nicolas Cage in National Treasure.

-Anything commissioned by the Astors, like Astor Row (130th St between Lenox & 5th Aves). This family was known as the landlords of New York and knew how to live. They were like the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers of their age and you can tell by the way they built their homes.

-The Hamilton Grange (414 W141st St). Birthplace of Alexander Hamilton and a testament to preservation. In St Nicholas Park so your inner naturalist can be happy too.

New York City has a ton of museums, we all know this. But did you know that in Harlem you can find the Graffiti Hall of Fame, the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Museum of the City of New York, El Museo del Barrio, the Hispanic Society of America, and the Hip Hop Smithsonion. Seriously. But if you want to check out the big names: The Guggenheim (Take either buses M1, M2, M3 to the 5th Ave/ E 90th St stop), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Take those same buses, M1, M2, M3 one more stop south to 5th Ave/E 84th St stop), The American Museum of Natural History (Take the C or B trains to 81st St stop), and the MoMA (take the B or D trains to the 7th Ave stop & walk 1 block east) are all within a 20 minute public transportation ride.
