Historic, peaceful, gracefully restored cape cod magnificently situated on a private dune surrounded by 1.5 acres of lush greenery, with views of the bay, sunsets, sunrises. And only a 6 minute walk to town and beach. A real piece of old Provincetown, luxuriously appointed. Sleeps 8+: three bedrooms upstairs (1 queen, 1 full, 2 twin), and a study/bedroom downstairs. Plus a private sleeping cottage w bathroom & outdoor shower. The house, dating from 1800, along with the Barn next door, is on the National Register of Historic Places. We restored the house in spring 2010, meticulously maintaining its character but adding many luxurious modern touches, including a large hand-crafted screened porch among the trees, a gourmet kitchen, a new bathroom with tiled shower. Comments from renters: 'idyllic,' 'truly special,' 'great character,' and (our favorite) 'if your house was a woman I would marry her.' If you are looking for peace, beauty, comfort, and genuine Cape Cod charm, you cannot possibly do better. Ample parking.
Our House: The thing is, we renovated and furnished this house for us, not really with renters in mind. We stay here at least four weeks in the summer and frequently in the off season. That means that the appointments are as we want them to be, and our standards are pretty high (nice cotton sheets, plush towels, all-clad pots etc). Of course, a renovation basically for ourselves means that the house reflects our own needs and personality, and so is perhaps rather unlike a typical luxury rental -- there's a cable TV, for example, but it's small and lives in the closet, and the furnishings have a fairly specific aesthetic, etc. If you are looking for air conditioning and gleaming surfaces, this house is not for you. We fell in love with this property the moment we walked onto it in the summer of 2009, and from our standpoint (and that of many of our friends!) it is the nicest place in town. The pictures don't begin to do justice to the setting.
The History: Together with the barn next door, this house is on the National Register of Historic Places (one of only 6 sites in Provincetown so designated). The artist Charles Hawthorne taught his students in the barn, and housed them in our house, and the property was a magnet for artists in the 20th century. Hans Hoffman lived here for about 15 years mid-century. The main house (a 27x27 foot cape circa 1800) was moved in four pieces from Commercial street (the main drag) in Provincetown in the 1910s by Hawthorne, and brilliantly situated at the top of Miller Hill. At that time a small addition was made to the house, which is now our kitchen and bathroom. For more on Hawthorne, start here: http://www.tfaoi.com/newsm1/n1m288.htm
This past fall we purchased the adjoining property, and so the historic Hawthorne Barn, freshly restored, is also available for rental -- home away # 972766. If you would like to rent both the house and the barn (sleeps 12+), please contact us.

I am a longtime visitor to Provincetown for several decades and have had many long term and short stay rentals and know the town very well. This house and property are by the far the best and top of my list. It is a perfect mix of old Cape Cod style and feel with all the updated amenities you need while visiting. The property and gardens are very private and yet just a short walk or bike ride into town and the beach. The house has so many different rooms and spaces for entertaining or just relaxing in the peaceful environment. The decor and furnishings are perfect for the historic house and yet feel very up to date. Interesting collection of art and great library full of good books. The house is very well maintained, clean and everything easy to use. The owners have provided a great very detailed manual to everything you need to know during your stay. They were great hosts throughout the process. The kitchen is fantastic and has everything you need to make great meals. The bedrooms are perfect and all have comfortable beds and nice bedding. There are bikes to use for getting around town and going to the beach and plenty of everything else you need for a perfect getaway vacation. The outdoor deck areas on the front and back of the house make an idilic setting for getting sun, reading, entertaining and just being in the wonderful natural environment that surrounds the house. There is a private outdoor shower which is a superb added bonus! The property has a very interesting history full of notable well - known artists and creative people who have both lived, visited and created on the property. You can still feel this energy and its link to the creative community of the town in other eras. this house is honestly my favorite place i have stayed in all of my many years as a Provincetown visitor! i highly recommend this house for anyone who wants a special and memorable time at a fantastic property.Did you find this review helpful? We had a fantastic time in P-Town staying in this very private, charming cape house on a quiet secluded hilltop. Great location, just far enough from town, but very accessible on foot or bike. The patio offered delightful and relaxing views. The place was clean and cared for. The kitchen fairly was well stocked with spices and pots and pans, etc. We would recommend the place as we hope to stay there again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

If you prefer your own quiet compound over the compressed bustle of the beach, this place is for you. Atop a hill, you and family and friends can enjoy your own secluded world, while just a quick walk or bike ride from central P-Town. And this is no cookie-cutter rental. Every aspect of the house ranges from cute to quirky, and all of it terrifically comfortable. Relax and rejuvenate!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Imagine a vintage Cape Cod cottage sitting atop a secluded hill, overlooking dunes and Cape woodlands, yet just a few minutes' walk from Provincetown's restaurants and vibrant streetlife. What a perfect combination! This beautiful home is ideal for extended families or groups of friends who want to cook together, dine together on a spectacular screened-in porch, and enjoy a choice of bedrooms spread between the main cottage and outbuildings. The collection of bikes makes it easy to explore miles of bike paths winding through the nearby Cape Cod National Seashore. This place is both exhilarating and rejuvenating!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This house had everything you could wish for. Privacy, peace and quiet, views, exquisite architectural details from original early New England house. We felt miles away from the hustle and bustle of Commercial street, yet it was a quick 5 minute bike ride to The Wired Puppy. 5 beautiful brand new bikes come with the rental. We swam at either Herring Cove Beach or Race Point Beach every day. We rented sailboats at Flyers boat rentals. This was the most relaxing Ptown vacation our family has ever had. We had friends for dinner every night. Great house for entertaining. Yes, we would not hesitate to recommend this house to friends. Yes, we plan to stay here again!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: We are a couple of New Yorkers who've been in love with Cape Cod and especially Provincetown for many years. It's the landscape, the light, the sea, our community of eccentric friends, and even the small-town shenanigans. We are now managing to spend four weeks here each summer (as well as thanksgiving, new years, etc), and we are finding that we treasure every minute.
Why the Owner Chose Provincetown:
After many years of happily renting and coming up for a couple weeks at least each summer, on a sort of lark in 2009 we went house hunting. One of us especially was very skeptical about the idea (it's far!), but when we walked on to this property, we took one look at eachother, and the rest was just details.
We are renting the place not only to defray some of the insane expense, but also because it just seems wrong for it to sit empty. So far we've had wonderful luck with our renters, who have appreciated just what we do: the peace, the beauty, the setting, long evenings on the porch with the wind rustling the trees.
In the fall of 2012, we purchased the adjoining property (Home Away # 972766), the original Hawthorne Barn/Studio, thus reuniting, to the extent possible, the original Hawthorne property.
