Featured in numerous books on natural building, our cottage is a welcoming and cozy retreat hand sculpted of local, sustainable natural materials located on a lovely acreage with sheep, gardens and orchards. Downstairs, is a simple and welcoming kitchen and breakfast nook created with an eclectic mix of vintage and handmade....from the local artist built furnishings to the handwoven dishtowels. The woodstove and massive cob chimney create a cozy window seat for enjoying tea and a book. Cantilevered stairs made of massive slabs of Douglas fir curve up to the bedroom where the arched roof and curved walls embrace a double bed created by a local master wood worker. Step out onto the front or back balconies to watch our local heron hunt frogs in the pond, bald eagles flying overhead or the sheep grazing beneath the apple trees. In the spring, the evening frog chorus is astounding. This whole living space is a work of art created by loving friends dedicated to making the world a safe, healthy and beautiful space starting with our small island homes. Our neighborhood is primarily agricultural with fields, cows, horses and orchards. It's a ten minute walk in one direction to a beach with boat launch. Small islands and bays are popular with kayakers. In the other direction, a fifteen minute walk will bring you to a family grocery specializing in local organic produce as well as several small galleries and a fun bookstore.

About the owner: We are a couple in our thirties with young identical twin sons. We live in an old eclectic farmhouse on the property. Manny is a computer programmer and works from home. Alexis ardently spins, knits and weaves in any time she isn't minding the boys, cooking, or gardening. We enjoy exploring the islands by boat, foot or bike. Manny and the boys are all sort of crazy about bikes. And wear a lot of hand knit sweaters.
Why the Owner Chose Mayne Island: We met at a cob building workshop, both drawn to the beauty of cob houses, particularly this one. Alexis was planning on building a cottage on her family's Pennsylvania farm but romance derailed all her plans and we married and settled in BC. After marrying, we first lived as caretakers on a smaller nearby island for several years. When we found out this place might be coming up for sale, we jumped at the opportunity.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: We love everything about the property. It's seclusion and nature, the heritage fruit trees and sunny garden spaces. The whole dream of the cottage. And our funny crooked farmhouse. We love the space, the skylights, the sound of summer winds in the aspens. We love watching our hens scratch and peck beneathe the cedars and ferns.
