  Just back from our tour of the Northwest and our stay on the houseboat. Who ever coined the phrase "location, location, location", must have stayed on Otter Magic, because it was truly magic! The salt air, the ocean breezes, coffee & cocktails on the deck, and cozy interior made us re-think hotels forever. Also, the close proximity to town was great. Wendy thought of everything; kitchen was well stocked, as well as the head, and bed ultra comfy, with beautiful linens and down comforter and pillows. We slept with the door open each night, through the night and absolutely loved it!

  Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, girls getaway, romantic getaway.

  My husband wanted to take me back to Friday Harbor, where he proposed to me years ago. He found the Otter Magic, and we are very happy with our choice of places to stay. The owners/hosts were most gracious and generous, yet unobtrusive, in spite of the fact they live next door. The boat is a bit tight (stairs to the bedroom and the bathroom was typical of a boat - save for the *awesome* jet-tub/shower). But this was more than compensated by the amenities (full kitchen, washer/dryer, grill etc), which were very nice, and there were lovely planters/solarium full of flowers and such. Not everything was intuitive, but asking Rick or Wendy always brought an delightful and most friendly/informative exchange. They are quite engaging people, whom I do hope to come across again. The walk to and from town was invigorating, but all in all, this is a place for fairly fit people. If you have limited mobility, or need extra space to move around, this boat will be uncomfortable. We, however, delighted in the quaint, clean, if slightly tight quarters. The views, outdoor decks and excellent stereo system made for exquisite evening "porch setting". Friday Harbor has an excellent array of fine dining, mostly tempered by a casual atmosphere. I highly recommend the Rocky Bay Cafe for breakfast (best Corned Beef Hash and Biscuits and Gravy EVER) and the Cask and Schooner outdid itself each time we ate there (spouse is a retired chef, so we know of which we speak ;-> ). Nice thing about the Otter Magic - you could goto the Farmers Market and buy your groceries, and simply cook at home to save money, and enjoy your own home-cooked food. The local fare is indeed exceptional, regardless of whether you go to the market, grocery, or a restaurant. The only thing I wished for was a small motorized dinghy to putz around the bay in... That said, there is something for almost everyone in the San Juan Islands, and everyone we came into contact with were most eager to be gracious hosts, which makes it an excellent travel destination. Wendy and Rick are genuinely delightful and gregarious (Wendy especially) yet sensitive to their guests' desires for peace and privacy (Rick especially) . Made a perfect mix for us. Thank you very much, Rick and Wendy. We hope to see you again some day.

  My Wife Nancy and I own Burch Street Casitas in Taos New Mexico. Because we offer unique lodging, that is what we are looking for when we travel. We spent 4 wonderful days aboard Otter Magic. It was beyond our expectations. The setting is one of kind, marine life, ferries, beautiful sunsets, fresh air and marina activity. The location was perfect. 10 minute walk to everything we needed.Didn't even need a car. Our favorite activity was purchasing fresh seafood each day from Eric and Brenda at Friday Harbor Seafood.The best seafood I have ever cooked. We would bring 3 different types back to Otter Magic and cook. What a nice experience to cook on the stern every evening. The galley is well stocked. The only problem was our stay wasn't long enough. We will be back! Thank you Wendy and Rick.

  My wife and I spent our 40th anniversary on the Otter Magic and could not have been more pleased, fulfilled, relaxed, and yes, enchanted. The owners were exceptionally accommodating and the boat's serenity captured us even before we boarded. Though we twice took the ten minute walk into Friday Harbor, we shed motivation for even that short stroll when we realized the tranquility of just sitting on the back deck. There, watching seaplanes, ferries, water taxis, and birds of all feathers kept us in an hypnotic state for a long weekend we will never forget. The Otter Magic is so much more than just a boat; this float home is replete with adorable decorations and dense with blossoming flowers both inside and outside its two well appointed levels. The sound of fog horns, the smell of budding blossoms, and the waves rocking us to sleep. It simply doesn't get much better than this. We shall return!

  As stated very quiet and peaceful. The property was clean and has everything you need for a stay including all the dishes, linens, towels, and cooking facilities. The bathroom facilities are horrible and you have to hike up to the marina restroom. If you plan on taking your boat, make sure you have a dingy to get to town. And don't plan on parking your boat in front, not allowed by owner but workable. A little far to town on foot but as long as the weather is pleasant not too bad. Definatley not for the un-fit or disabled. The owners were right next door part of the time but not intrusive on your stay. The lady that is the property owner is a gem. Comfortable beds and enough room for 4 adults. NOT a good place for kids as there are lots of breakables. All in all we had a pleasant stay and sat a watched many sunsets and the fireworks on July 4th. No check out time was listed so were kind of taken aback when the owner's boyfriend stepped in while we were packing up in the morning and said, "come on people, you need to step it up and get moving, we have a window vendor coming today!" Wow, really rude. A little steep in price for where it is located from town and the owner charges extra for everything, extra people, etc. Still a very peaceful place to unwind and watch the wildlife.

  Otter Magic delivered just as advertised. We didn't want to leave! We loved the harbor life, watching the activities all around us. Yes we saw the Otters! This is probably the only and best place to stay on the water Friday Harbor if you do not own your own yacht. You will be pleased.

  We stayed at Otter Magic at the end of August and into September, which is a beautiful time to be in the San Juans. It was our first time living on a houseboat and we would, without a doubt, come back here again! It would accommodate 4 easily, but it was a dream for 2, especially if you’re looking for a quiet, romantic getaway. It’s nestled in a quiet corner of a private marina, which is just around the bend from the bustling main part of Friday Harbor but still close enough that you can walk to restaurants and shops. We loved being near enough to watch the ferries and all the boats and seaplanes come into Friday Harbor, but appreciated being far enough away to avoid the bar and motor noise and to not experience major wake action while on the houseboat (one of us gets seasick easily). Depending on the wind direction, seaplanes sometimes come right overhead, but that’s kind of cool too! We spent almost every evening on the front porch -- what we looked forward to as “Wine & Cheese Hour” -- watching the sunset and the ferries come in and out. We’ve never done a vacation where we cooked dinner every night, but that’s exactly what we did, largely because we enjoyed being on the houseboat so much, and because you can’t miss buying fresh shrimp, salmon or crab from the fishmonger in Friday Harbor (who is a doll, by the way) and either cooking it on the boat grill on the back porch or in the well stocked, very functional galley kitchen. The bathroom is boat-tight, but there is plenty of hot water for showers, and the jet tub, while rather loud, really works! Oh, and a nice bonus: a functional washer and dryer. The washer was a little hard to figure out, but it was nice to be able to do a quick load of laundry. The owner is a master gardener whose flowers and plants are can be found everywhere, both outside and in the upstairs solarium, which is charmingly lit with rope lights in the evening hours (they’re on a timer, so they don’t keep you up). The "aquarium effect" of the San Juans is in full view at Otter Magic! Huge purple and orange starfish can be seen along the rocks just outside, tons of anemones and crabs (which you can trap if you want to go to the effort) call the marina home, and jellyfish and shrimp glide past the boat on the tide every day. A lot of VRBO places are devoid of any personality, but Otter Magic feels like a HOME. It’s comfortable, cared for, and very welcoming. Highly recommended!!
